SOLO NIGHT HIKING: My first attempt. Creepy woods & weird noises as I cross the moors alone.

I walked this road during the summer and decided this would make a good walk, but in reverse, and overnight. I walked over the moors, at midnight, on a full moon. There hadn't been reports of werewolves for weeks, so what could possibly go wrong. This was to be my first night hike and my first solo attempt. I passed creepy woods, heard weird noises, but it was an amazing experience.

It was certainly an experience. I kept thinking how alone I was, but kept reminding myself no one else would be crazy enough to be out at that time in the morning, so I was safe.

You can't see stars when there's a moon out. Go to a local park when no moon loads of stars.

Being a town centre boy, I'm not used to these weird noises in the dark. It was an amazing experience.

I have been enyoing your adventures and learning about the sights and transportation options in and around Scotland. I hope to visit Scotland one day soon, and prefer to use public transportation options, so it's good to get some ideas and inspiration. A little backpacker type stove would be just the ticket on this adventure in the dark. Stow it in your backpack and stop for a hot beverage at the half way point and/or at the destination, since you had time to kill anyways. Or, even easier would be to pack a thermos containing a hot beverage. I would also have a thermal layer such as down to wrap up in, and definitely merino wool base layers, but then again I wouldn't be doing a cold weather solo night walk. I will just enjoy it vicariously, letting you brave the elements. 😉 Oh, and never mind snoring sheep (are you sure it wasn't a shepherd, lol??)- just be thankful you aren't hiking in the wilds of places like Canada, where there really are critters to be wary of! Ah but that what I like about the UK - countryside where you are never all that far from civilization. Or a train station.

No and no. Things get you in the night. I would be afraid to do it by myself. The cars would bother me. Step off the road if you have to when they pass. Guarantee they will not see you. Be safe.

There's only so much filming you can do (and viewers will tolerate) of a light shining onto a road in complete darkness as you walk along. :-)

Great video Scott. Nothing like a moonlight stroll. Whether over the moors or through the mountain woods. Sorry you didn't get to see the Milky Way this time. I think that it is the most awesome night sky sight for size and along with the northern lights or the Geminids meteor showers, it is a spectacular visual. It really makes you realize how huge the universe actually is.

Just found this video, amusing and engaging. I used to take lots of long walks at night, the countryside looks very different by night. I remember one walk where two badgers, deep in conversation with each other, were walking towards me. I halted to watch them. They got within 20 feet of me before they realized I was there. I also have spent many nights sailing far from land. The skies can be utterly stunning. I much prefer sailing at night than day.
