On your fire concern, you are 100% correct to coach getting in the habit of knowing at all times what current fire ban conditions are. As of 8/26 in that area you were in there were not any county restrictions and there were very few national forest restrictions. Stage 1 in some cases which does allow a wood fire in a contained ring. Depending on the specific conditions of those campers, they may have been wholly within their right to have the campfires you passed by.

Dude we had tons of rain this year. Some areas you could have crashed a 747 into and not started a fire. Yes every year is different. Probably next year we will burn down.

The temperature increases and decreases quickly because of lower air density and lower humidity. There’s just less mass to heat and at night hold the heat.

It does seem counterintuitive that the closer to the sun the colder it gets when you also hear that hot air rises. I also have never thought of why the little chipmunk? or ground squirrel? moves its tail to talk. It is so fun to ponder the wonders of the world while camping in the wilderness. I just went down that road this weekend. You are right the San Juans are kind of empty. Spent many years fly-fishing on the Conejos River - many times backpacking up the South Fork of the Conejos from the trailhead at a parking area about two-thirds of the way up to Platoro. Absolutely beautiful area. But you're right about the washboard road. It can be excruciating. I've also driven from Platoro over the mountains to South Fork (in a 1995 Toyota T100 - precursor to the Tundra, and much smaller). It is wonderful country for sure. Can't wait to see your next segment. It's been at least 35 years since I made the journey up Stony Pass from the Creede side (that trip was in a brand-new 1984 Nissan 4x4 Kingcab pickup - it was Nissan's first foray into the 4x4 world). BTW - I'm your virtual neighbor, living in OKC. :) As always, thanks much for sharing. Steve

I know that area well. That pass you did is one of our favorite trails and the lake you camped at is one of our favorite spots for lunch. We camp and trail ride that area every year with our sxs. Saw our first bear not too far from the lake in June.

Matt FYI we have a place in South Park (basically smack dab in the middle of Colorado) and we have not had a burn ban this summer except when they have had red flag warnings (high wind warnings). We had burn ban almost all of last summer but nothing this summer because of how wet the early part of the summer was. Probably no burn ban down there where you were as well.

Hoping to move back to Colorado next year. I was born and raised in Grand Junction. I miss the area, being so close to so many adventure opportunities. It's sad how many trees have been killed by bark beetles though. Otherwise beautiful areas are seemingly ruined by dead trees because of them.

Another nice video, thank you. When collapsing the ladder try starting from the bottom. You should be able to push the release on the bottom rung and then the rest will automatically collapse without having to push each individual release.

Hi Matt. Ive watched a lot of your videos and I am a big fan of your channel. Your Colorado videos are especially awesome because I live here and am looking forward to cranking up my overlanding adventures soon. I have an off road pop up camper that I pull behind my 2015 JKU which is great for my spouse, our two boys (13 and 15) and our two dogs. However, I recently bough a used rooftop tent that I am anxious to try out this late summer and fall yet. Its always been my original plan to outfit my jeep with the rooftop tent and overlanding type set up. Im getting there..... Keep the great work and thank you for the inspiration with all that you. (oh, by the way, I moved here in 1999. I am originally from the St. Louis area and have spent many fun adventures when I was younger at the Lake of the Ozarks.) Lastly, when you passed that little chipmunk, I had the same thought/question, just before you verbalized it, regarding the chipmunk and the tail flick. So I looked it up. I havent read all of the comments for this video, so maybe someone answered it already. In case not. Here you go!! "The tail-flick is a way for the animal to communicate that it sees the predator and will flee if it gets closer. The squirrel might also flick its tail to communicate warnings to other squirrels in its territory. The flick is a way to tell other squirrels to watch out or stay away from their food."

Yes It gets hot faster because you're closer to the Sun but also, the drier air is less resistant to temperature change. So it gets hot faster but it also gets cold faster. It's the water in the air helps stabilize the temperature. That's why it's still 95° at 9:00 p.m. in Alabama. I actually used to live in Colorado, so I've seen both extremes. On another topic... I just can't get over how many miles you've got off road and how well that gladiator is holding up.

In Colorado the exposure from the sun is worse due to less protection from the atmosphere that you would get in let’s say Texas. Although Texas has the smothering humidity.

Hello. I have an important question for you. You may want to make an single video for this too. What do you do if you get stuck and stranded driving to a remote secluded location with no service miles away from civilization? I know that Garmin makes a GPS that you can push an emergency button that connects you to a 911 operator and search and rescue, you can even talk to a person too. Do you have any of these devices? I got stuck and broken down recently in Colorado, in Fort Collins and we had no service if you watch my video. Thank you!

Next week sometime I will be heading out on my own. First time in my whole 58 years on this earth. Needless to say I’m a little hesitant actually somewhat scared in fact. I will be in my minivan camper I built. So no overlanding for me! I tried creek crawling in it and didn’t go to well, lol but I digress, how do you feel about an older lady and her safety? Anything you think I need to look out for? Im going up through northern Missouri to SD, ND, WY, MT and maybe back down into Northern CO. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated!!

Honestly like anyone else always a good idea to have a check in person who knows where you are going and plan to go. As Matt mentioned a Garmin InReach is a good idea if you get into areas with no cell service. Other than that just enjoy the scenery and take your time and have a great trip.

Running on 37" 5.29 gears. I did over land one time and almost ran out before getting to gas station. Packs are nice to have because you never know when you need them.

I wash it when I return home from trips. If it's been super muddy or dusty I'll find a car wash in a town and rinse it off during a trip. I do all my maintenance at home but once we are traveling full time you can do routine stuff in an OReilly or auto zone parking lot.

Thanks!! Oddly enough I had a wheel hub cover that was missing a bolt on the rear driver wheel and was loose.
