I grew up in central Texas and Summer meant living on the lake shore with a tarp above, a driftwood campfire, and an army surplus cot for my bed (no sleeping bag, after all, this was Texas in the summer). I now live in Maine, am 72, almost completely crippled by arthritis; until recently I believed I only had my memories of camping and communing with nature as my actual camping days were behind me. But KZbin and videos such as this allow me to vicariously enjoy adventures once more. Thanks Corporal!

I'm living in the swamp wilderness of Florida, homeless from Michigan since last July and it's an inspiration to try different things while out here. At 65 years old I could feel sorry for myself but instead I know I'm doing what a lot of people wish they could do lol boondocking, rat hole money and buy some property, the corporal would be welcome to practice in my woods.

This reminds me of when my Dad and I went hunting in the Catskills. We had large army surplus tent, we stayed for two weeks! My Dad was a good hunter, most of the "Hunters" bought Dad's kills and passed them off as there's. We had a small stove made out of a grease gun drum and a old shopping cart. We told each other stories and had a grand old time. My Dad made me cut out of school for the hole two weeks. I miss Dad terribly. Check out the woods, it can be fun.

I would completely forget about the camera shots. .. not to mention all the time editing. Good work sir. Good work.

It compresses down to nearly nothing,can be buried and retrieved easily for a Dakota fire pit. Also have used hollow logs for same thing,as well as an easy rocket stove. I’m Canadian,and I used to go winter camping a lot when younger. Still do search and rescue.

Watching you sharpen your knife, I just wanted to comment for anyone in general that if you sharpen your knife and it "feels" like one side is sharper than the other (and the number of strokes are the same on each side), it indicates you are probably (99%) rolling the blade on the not so sharp side. Super easy to correct once you know what's going on (just take a little more time with the strokes on that side and make sure you keep the alignment of the stone to the edge the same, no rolling).

Good stuff mate , You put in a big effort. Your digging stick reminded me of the digging sticks the Aboriginals use down here in Australia . One end is shaved flat and the other end is pointed then it is pushed under the coals of a fire to harden both ends. I like how you used what appears to be an emergency blanket to cover the roof. I guess over time one could cover the walls in with whatever and dig a drainage channel around it incase of heavy rain etc. Glad I subscribed to your channel I like stuff like this it keeps the mind active. Well happy New Year to you and yours and I look forward to viewing more of your content , Cheers from Australia :-).

I really like that shelter. Just one question about the fire hole though... if you get really heavy rain, how would you stop the outside hole from flooding? If it gets real heavy, is it just a case of rigging up some sort of cover over it to help keep the rain off? Or would you go outside and dig it deeper so the rain could pool into a deeper hole?
@jjb2004mk23 жыл бұрын
Maybe you could put another clay rim around the hole like there is for the inside hole, and then put 4 small stones around the edge of the hole and balance a larger flat stone accross the top of them, so air can get in but water can't. It would have to be seriously heavy rain for it to be a problem though surely.
