Even on a short distance sail like that, quite a bit is going on wind wise and sail wise 😂. Unfortunately the beaches are not really clean, there is a lot of trash, just sits a little higher up along the shoreline. 🙈😬 but not as bad as the southern beach of Viveros island, that one is probably one of the worst since it’s exposed to the southern swell 😢

Well, electronics only tell you so much...there is a lot to take in from your surroundings if you look at the details (and the obvious) 😂. Water movement, colors etc. can help u a lot. Thanks for sharing - you make sailing look like so much fun and I really dig your spirit. I'm almost convinced I should buy a boat and killer videos of you sailing where you capture the technical beauty and fun of it tip the scale. You are a lovely story teller too with your voice overs and video work. Dig the action of your sailing edits. Really feels like we're with you. Sheesh, more of my KZbin channels are about sailing than anything else and I have never even been on a sailboat! I've just been drawn to watch all these damn sailing channels like I even know what people are doing when they tack or jibe or tug on ropes. How smart a person need to be to figure all that out? Maybe I'll look up driving lessons. Or a charting course or captain's lessons - sailing schools? I need to get my feet wet in a non sinking kind of way. Vacation sailing as crew must be a thing right? In the mean time you have a big fan. Happy sails.
@WhiteSpotPirates3 жыл бұрын
😂 well, the basics of sailing are no rocket science really. How to learn it really depends on the liking of each person. If u prefer school or just going out with a friend who is a good teacher or joining a club or reading books / watching videos. Maybe a mix of it all ☺️ . Good luck on getting your feet wet (in a non sinking manner, of course! 😜)

Oh and small boat sailing will teach u the basics of sailing a lot faster because it’s so direct and you notice it mistakes very quickly 😂 a longer vaca on a friends boat will tell u a bit more about living in a boat and fixing things on the go.

A tip when using paint rollers. If you are planning on recoating each day, immerse your roller in the paint, cover the roller and tray with a very wet towel and it will be ready to go the next day. Rollers and trays can store this way for several days. Same with brushes too, leave them in the paint and cover them with a wet cloth. I hate sailing in light wind. Give me 20 - 25 knots anytime, much easier to sail. I can't help but feel you are underpowering Karl. A good sailing heel is 22.5 degrees that's where most yachts are designed to sail. But I guess it is a confidence and security thing when you are sailing alone. Karl looks solid to me and with the twin keels I think you could power him up more. But I have to say, you are a good sailor and extremely capable boat repairer. :)
@WhiteSpotPirates3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the recommendation with the paint 👍 About the under powering: highly possible...each to their own I guess ☺️. If I cannot hold the tiller anymore without pushing all my body weight into it, then to me that’s too much canvas just for my own comfort. Especially going upwind, the pressure on the tiller gets really strong because the rudder is not pre-balanced and he just wants to shoot into the wind. It’s really tiring to steer... but I am sure that others would not mind doing that and he would probably go a knot faster ☺️. I just feel more comfortable when I know I can handle everything easily instead of pushing the limits. That’s just my personal preference, as you said, a matter of comfort and security for me 👍.

Hey Nike@@WhiteSpotPirates & @vaughangill7288 In 1976 I purchased my brand new 35', Challenger Ketch from the owner of Challenger Yachts at the Miai Boat show for delivery to Buffalo, NY & Lake Ontario, NY & Canada. We, my wife & 2 boys 7 & 11 years old planned to live and sail her on Lake Ontario, The St Lawrence River, and the 1,000 Islands areas from April 1st until November 1st forever. The Owner & designer of Challenger Yachts gave some last-minute words of wisdom. Sail her at no more than 7% angle of heal for maximum speed and comfort. I have been caught in huge winds and huge seas and have had my challenger heeled over to almost the top of the Main salon windows. She is almost unmanageable at that point and the sea comes almost over the cockpit comings into the cockpit. A somewhat scary situation. Challenger sails best at about 7% angle of heal. At that, she screams with the right amount of sail and angle to the wind. It was so when we launched her in 1977 and until I sold her in 1994. Enjoy Carl. You are doing a super job, Captain, Nike.

@@WhiteSpotPirates I'm sailing in the Norwegian fjords and the winds in the fjords is usually only sailable when thay blow in or out the stretch of the fjord you are sailing in. Otherwise it's fluky, extremely gusty and if it's strong you get catabatic winds (tumbling downdrafts from the steep mountains😱) and crazy acceleration zones. So my braveness level keeps me at the dock when the conditions is strong, and snailing patiently in light winds. But it's in light conditions you get to appreciate the wonderful scenery. I did some rough numbers once and came to a 6,25% chance of ok wind conditions in the fjords (not adjusting for luck) but i love it anyway. Stay safe Nike. Looking forward to your next video

Great sailing and great footage ! Thanks ! May I make a suggestion ? I think many would benefit if you talked about the measures you take to maintain your health and safety. I'm referring to reducing the risks of accidents like cutting your foot, getting an infected arm or leg, falling overboard, breaking a leg or something like that. When I am solo, motions I would normally make like leaping down the companionway, stepping on and off the boat are given careful consideration in advance, which means I move slowly, but it also means I don't bash into something. Some folks I see here seem to not realize how much trouble they could be in if suddenly they could no longer use their arms and legs as they want and they are in an isolated spot with no radio coverage or ambulances
@WhiteSpotPirates3 жыл бұрын
Hi David, thanks a lot, that’s a great suggestion. I am not sure if I do tons of things to prevent things from happening but maybe once I think about it, there will probably be a couple popping up. Hm, I am not sure I understand that sand question. Is the sand on the bottom of the ocean where I dropped anchor the same as the one on the beach? It’s a bit more muddy down there than on the beach. I actually just let the paint dry and then reuse it. Since it’s a one component paint that works quite alright. 👍 aluminum foil takes a lot of energy to produce so I prefer to use another Tetra Pak instead of using foil 😬 since the trash is there anyhow and would otherwise just be burnt.

@@WhiteSpotPirates You have answered my question about the beach sand/bottom anchoring: better holding in mud!😂 Trash has always been my number one concern. Sail On Nike!⛵🇺🇸

If you're gonna paint on top of old nonslip, I'd just use a wire brush for prep. Also, that blue tape is good in the sun and rain for around 2 weeks, plenty of time to put extra coats without removing the tape.

Yeah, I try to avoid metal brushes on the aluminum if I can...I think I will stick to the 120 sandpaper, worked really well for me. I have had different experience with masking tape...maybe it’s due to the brand, but when I left it more than 2 days, it was extremely hard to get off and caused a ton of extra work 😬
