Thank you to everybody who has supported the creation of these video and has shared this journey with my sailboat Karl with me so far. It would not have been the same without you.
This episode was filmed in 09 / 2020.
-
Hey, my name is Nike and I bought an aluminum 37 foot sailboat in Panama in 2013 that I named KARL. I spent a good year refitting it, mostly by myself and with the help of awesome friends, and then (mostly) solo sailed my sailboat around the western Caribbean.
In 2016, I crossed the Panama Canal, had a major engine break down, a near sinking experience and a serious foot injury which got me stuck along the Pacific coast of Central and South America.
In this Episode, we prep to beach my sailboat on purpose so I can renew my bottom paint. the current covid19 situation makes it tricky to go into a marina, so I take advantage of my twin keels and a strong moon tide to let my boat dry fall to get the bottom job done.
Enjoy and Ahoy,
Nike & Karl

Nicely done if a bit overdone I used to just anchor off by the bow then one stern line to shore or at least a stern anchor. biggest issue was the consistency of the bottom and sometimes I would strap a couple of boards under before she touched down but otherwise always drama free sometimes I would just walk her in until she touched bottom then walk out the anchor later. but then my boat was a few feet shorter too at just 24ft. right to get in and start scrubbing as the tide drops though wet fouling is sooooo much easier than dry.

Wow, that's quite a bit of preparation.... The way we do it here where the water is cold is that we wait an hour after full tide, beach the boat going forward slowly, start to scrape and when the tide is low enough install 2 stern anchors and a bow anchor and finish the scraping / painting. I said "the way we do it" actually it is "the way we used to do it" as AFAIK scraping a boat on the beach is now prohibited in the EU for environmental reasons.

The thing strikes me about your vids / adventures is that you are a "doer" and not a "talker" unlike like so many other Yachtie channels. Your ability to always be positive and find a "solution" rather than dwell on a "problem" is typified in your approach to antifouling the hull in this vid. This is so very uplifting and refreshing in these times of Covid19. Bravo 👍👍👍 PS - I concur with some of the others here that that you are just a little bit "crazy" but in my view that is certainly a positive 😎😎

I heard a captan express she was dissatisfied in not knowing what to be. She inspires many in the world to follow thier passion and she says she does not know what to do with her life in her sailing or not. Going to yonder lands via great big oceans and seas. Staying put as she serves her community well yet she expresses bewilderment. Hmm, she shows the world how going to the oceans is very dificult with small incomes, yet she has paid her dues many times over. Hmm. She shows the world how she addresses diversity with great victories and how bad pain comes to often... for the amazing jill of all trades, she carries the masters degree. now please, encourage her when you support her telling her to continue to believe that being, can almost always profit beyound even nessesities as she has taught me so well, that my sail boat is docked in repair looking for a captan who displays the greatest of this resilliance in every weather condition. I know she showed me how, and i believe her life cares best for others, and she is wonders...may her faith increase our teacher of the sailing seas, please as you will best for you you will be best of all who prosper in your journey that blesses much, as her soul comes from her being so kind in caring now time i pray shows you the best way my encouraging sailing friend...blessings... michael..m

The crocs fed by people are the most dangerous ones. Away from handouts, they are normally pretty shy unless you get too close too fast. Ones trained to follow people for food, wait for the first thing to splash and grab it out of conditioning.

But I also made sure I moved a lot once I was allowed and the surgery apparently was quite decent (lucky me). The swimming does not bother the calcaneus much. Maybe if u hurt the talus or ur middle foot bones it’s more restrictive on the fin use 🧐. My foot is doing okay but only back to 70% and still a fair amount of pain. The other bay we were in the other day there were two at least and probably more somewhere we did not see them 🙈. And there is some poisonous water snakes as well, but usually a bit more outside of the bay we were in. But usually non of the two would randomly attack u...

😂 yes it did involve some planning, timing and the help of my great friends. Without them I could not have made it during tides. The tides turned out to be the smaller problem, actually, it was the rainy season that was more of a limiting element and made things more complicated. But I won’t say more for now, you have to wait til next week to see what’s happening ☺️

I think you tie your bowline knot the wrong way just like me. The tail is supposed to be inside. Sail instructor gave me shit for it. It's never let me down though!
@WhiteSpotPirates
@WhiteSpotPirates 3 жыл бұрын
Haha there is a while battle about this. I would not consider it the wrong way but there is two different ways of doing it and they both have pros and cons. The cons of the end being outside is that things can get stuck on it (eg when u have a cutter stay like me it can get stuck with it on the cutter stay when tacking). A disadvantage to the end being inside is that it could potentially be pushed outwards step by step by whatever sits inside the eye...that’s why to me I prefer it being outside. I don’t think the know is any less strong outside or inside, I would not see why but happy to be proven wrong 😂. Only because people are shouting that sth is wrong does not always mean it is 😜😎. Did he explain u why he thought inside was better and outside was totally wrong? To me, looking at the knot it makes no difference strength wise...

@@WhiteSpotPirates Thank you for responding within the same hour! I want to see how your foot is doing? It has been a good while sine you broke your foot. You seem to be moving around well. The big question is are you happy?

@@tommycheshire5508 I am totally happy, yes. The foot is, well, he is not his usual old self but I get around and can do most of the stuff I wanna do. The foot made it alright through yard but once I was back at anchor and relaxed, the pain kicked me in the butt. I’d say the foot is a 70%...I am often pain free but the more I move the more it hurts. I’m just an old limping lady now 😂😂😂

He is our foreman and is called Mr. Boobs. He watched my whole anchor windlass overhaul and also when I hoisted Maria down her forestays to apply some protective coating. He switches between the theme boats and it’s always nice to see him. Sometimes he gives me a little nibble on the hand to caress me when we come back to the anchorage after being gone for a while. Really sweet. Never had a bird friend

The title of "beaching my sailboat" is missleading when you are anchoring in a shallow bay.
@WhiteSpotPirates
@WhiteSpotPirates 3 жыл бұрын
🤔 maybe u missed the whole point of this. The boat will be totally dry once the tide goes out...at the end of the video u see me standing on the ground next to my boat which is also sitting on ground aka the beach. Obviously u beach ur boat only in tidal areas because how else do u get it back off? So I am not quite sure what u find misleading about this...in the end, the boat is sitting on a beach...
@WhiteSpotPirates
@WhiteSpotPirates 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe let me phrase this differently: what did you think happens when you beach a sailboat? Run it on a beach and leave it there? 🤔
