The Solo makes a beautiful fire - true. Perfect for Summer fires. But when it's cold out, there's very little radiant heat from the sides -- the heat goes straight up in the air. Less smoke and beautiful, but for Spring and Fall fires, I'd go with something more classic and open. Just me... but since I already splurged on the pricey one, I guess I could swap them out in the Summer.

This video never showed the after burn of the gasses that would actually burn off even more of the smoke on the SoloStove. Had there been more wood in the SoloStove allowing for some embers to develop and build up to a hotter fire, the video would have shown the fire coming from the top inner holes. This is where the magic happens and the fire in the SoloStove becomes absolutely beautiful and mesmerizing. I am sure that Wagslick has experienced this now that he has had it longer. We have ordered the newer and larger Yukon that will begin production and shipping soon. We are truly excited about the Yukon.

Got mine (Bonfire) for Christmas. Every bit as great as advertised! Hot fires already X2 and almost zero smoke and smell after it gets going. I used a galvanized trash can lid to cover it when we were done sitting by it to cover it because rain was predicted for the morning. We easily kept 4 warm around it for 2 1/2 hours in 38 degree weather.... we could have had 7-8 around it and kept warm. A bit pricey (twice as expensive as a box-store firepit) but should last forever if you keep it out of the weather. Really doesn't burn more wood than a conventional firepit. Warning: although the bottom only gets warm, the sides will quickly scorch shoes if you touch them (bad wife!).

I've had my solo stove bonfire for about a year now and have had many a fire in it, some lasting way over 8 hours. You needed more wood to activate the second burn on the solo stove to show the effectiveness of the second burn...and you don't ever leave your solo stove out in the rain or out over night and let the dew fall on it...it will have a rusting affect... Even though it's 304 stainless steel... It will give it a rust effect...And don't wash it out with water... Just flip it over shake out all of the ash... If you want take a cloth and wipe it out that's fine..Or a leaf blower will work ... If you end up buying one read your information that solo stove gives you before lighting it up... If you want a handle on your solo stove bonfire... Go to Home Depot buy one of their 5 gallon buckets take the handle off bend it out and it will attach to the inside holes where the gasification/second burn occurs... Bam you have a carry handle... It's not a old washing machine tub!!!! There is science behind this stove...There is a double wall and it brings cool air from the bottom holes and the bottom grate and it gets extremely hot as it passes through the double wall and then out the top which causes the gasification affect.

Good review. It seems like the past several years every piece of electronics or appliance I've bought has been crappier than the item it replaced and just about anything marketed on the web can be discounted as BS out of hand. SoloStove was the one rare exception and was $250 very well spent. Fire Cheater Starter? This IS the fire cheater starter. I got a good deal on a bunch of fatwood that works like a charm but I'm pretty sure if I have 1 dry log in the mix and get a corner of it burning, I'll have a full blown fire in the SoloStove in a couple minutes.

Solo stove rocks! I have the solo bonfire as well and it has turned our household into "solo snobs". There is a huge reduction in smoke with the solo stove. Putting your arm in lava is about right, those things focus the heat right out the top(burn the hair off your arm when adding wood) and that's the whole principle of the solo stove. Focus the heat, add hot oxygen, burn most (85%+) of the smoke and make a really enjoyable fire! We like our bonfire so much that we ordered the Yukon on Kickstarter.....ya it was 400+ but after you become a solo snob it's worth it!

Took the bonefire camping this winter up in the mountains. We usually have a fire in a fire ring. Which everyone knows smokes a lot an the the smoke seems to follow you an u constantly move around the smoke. The Solo stove isnt 100% smoke free maybe 90%. The amazing thing is how hot it burns an how much heat it puts off. Also what little smoke it has goes straight up all nite long. The best part is we didnt smell like a fire in the morning. AMAZING product. Oh and u need to throw more wood to get the gasification going. Another cool feature when it gets going the fire bouncing in the holes around the top.

I have both the Solo Bonfire and the BioLite Fire Pit. The Solo Bonfire doesn’t hold a candle to the BioLite Fire Pit. The BioLite radiates heat in all directions and not just upwards like the solo bonfire. With the BioLite when your wanting to put the fire out you just crank up the fan to the highest setting and the fire burns out in 10-15 minutes. Once the wood is all consumed the pit cools down in a few minutes. You can cook on the BioLite and control the temp using the fan speeds. It also folds up much smaller for packing. The Solo is huge and bulky and awkward to pack if space is limited. The battery lasted me for 4 nights of fires on one charge. If you keep it plugged in to the covers built in solar panel during the day you could get infinite battery. If you run the fan speed on low or moderate low the wood burning efficiency and battery life is incredible. After a year of using and tons of charges the battery still lasts for days. No signs of slowing down. Also the Solo Only burns it’s wood at one speed which equivalent to burning wood in the BioLite on its High to Max fan speed (there are 4 speeds; Max, High, Med, Low). If I just have the BioLite fan speed down to its Med or Low setting the wood consumption efficiency is far greater than the Solo. One last thing. I can also control the height of the flame using different fan speeds which is a pretty cool feature.

@@thomasdegroof1004 It will take a long time to cool down. I keep mine the back yard, but it would take hours to cool. Best if you plan on staying the night. Cleaning, I just dump out the ashes and call it good. I have not grilled on it (it gets very hot) but a hot dog on a stick would work fine. Still love it and I am glad I bought one. Smoke comes from moisture, was your old pit out in the weather where the old ashed absorbed moisture. I do own a solo stove and yes, less smoke due to the dual wall. The heated air comes out the top and it's like a dual burn system which causes less smoke. Great video overall.

The solo stoves are best used for cooking, as the heat goes up to the pot, not out to the sides cooking your legs. It does not offer general radiant heating as the sides of the Solo absorb the radiation going out to the sides of the fire. However, if you are hot tenting, the sides get really hot and will heat the air in your tent as it comes into contact with the sides of your Solo.
@bantruong1444

The regular stove has the bottom all blocked up, no air flow, so this is not a fair comparison. I also agree with others about radiant heat, which is reduced in the Solo design.

Me thinks the holes around the unit (at the bottom), and the holes in the bottom help with the ignition and (mostly) smoke-free fire. IMO similar to the chimney starter made by Weber to start charcoal. Ummm, note sure if you read the directions on the Solo Stove before beginning the vid, but, probably a good idea to review their directions and suggestions. Might, also, cover some of the maintenance issues. Good review, overall. Y'all Be Safe!

Been looking into these and quite frankly they are expensive to start with. Plus the stove radiates almost zero heat outwards which is what 50% of people needing/wanting a fire wants. It's a fire in a can so you also lose the ambiance of watching the fire down to the red hot coals. And in my area we appreciate the smoke as it helps with the bugs. As he states adding wood is also less enjoyable too. I've seen prices on these from $299 all the way up to $550 and for my application takes the enjoyment out of a backyard fire. Plus he compares it alongside a fire pit that doesn't have open sides so of course it won't have as much airflow. Even a cheap $69 fire pit has steel mesh sides for visibility and airflow. And have it a solid fire or two and you'll see the stainless steel discolor badly, which it WILL do making it an eyesore. Taking it camping is a chore as it takes up space and like I said takes away most of the benefits of having a fire in the first place. It almost sounds like a paid review he likes it so much which is all fine and dandy but I wouldn't be caught dead buying one of these.

For everyone with the negative comments, this fire pit is not for all... it is designed for less smoke, not the radiant heat necessarily or even the perfect view of your fire. But there are situations when then smoke is annoying, and just having a fire for some ambiance is nice. Nobody is saying "you must buy this, it's the best ever".

The point of this one is to burn the wood gas a second time. The wood gas goes down and get heated and mixed with air up trough the canal and wood gas comes out and burn the unburned wood gas from the top a second time. You must add enough wood to get it going. Doing it properly will show you flames coming out of the holes on top like a gas stove. Here you can see how it works when enough heat. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIm8dKmPbNiDnpo

When they did the kickstart ( years ago ) on the Campfire I joined with a order for the whole Cmapfire set. Gave it to the son-in-law since he and his wife like to camp in established areas.

How’s the radiant heat off the side? For a cold fall night kind of thing, Can you seat 6 people around it and be warm?

The Solo stove is ventilated. No wonder it burns hotter and cleaner. Downsides are: almost no radiant heat to the sides because it's double-walled with ventilation in-between keeping the outside cool, you need more fuel/hour and you actually have to clean it before every burn or the ventilation system won't work. So yes, it has it's ups and downs.

David Lomm Not really The solo has a double wall Fresh air get heated by the wall When the heated air come out from the hole on top just below the ring . The hot air would combust the unburned smoke It’s called secondary combustion Old fire pit don’t do that Even with fresh air hole drilled from bottom Because the fresh air is NOT HEATED So it would not spontaneously combust unburned smoke
@noneshere

Depends on what you want ; Too much oxygen you dont get coals, only ashes. We make charcoal from our yard droppings for the garden beds. Pot ash dont work like charcoal dose. Low oxygen bowls burn longer & make coals. (then we pour water on ) High ventilation burns fast and real hot. Charcoal is good byproduct to have around.
@wildnorthadventures6543
@wildnorthadventures6543 5 жыл бұрын
Secondary combustion is only a small part of it . It’s mainly the air flow . It’s sucking air from the bottom and the added oxygen is the key . Stupidly simple

@@sofjanmustopoh7232 But the heat is still going straight up. If you want/need a fire for radiant heat (which 50% of us do) then this is nothing but an EXPENSIVE rocket stove. Sure someone got rich off the idea and lives on a beach today but it's nothing but a shiny toy. People who burn backyard fires don't want what this stove claims to do. It's a fire in a can. An expensive one at that.

well guys and gals, I`m an old fart and have seen too many dummies leaving campfires burning and there is not always rocks to build a fire spot or fire rings so what i`ve told people to do is just pick up an old propane or charcoal Barbeque at a garage sale or recycle your old one. With an old Bq you can carry dry wood inside it and when yoy get to your site open it up, start a fire, you can use the grills for cooking and turn the lid to wind side to control wind, pick any size you like you can burn old coals from other fires, or any other fuel, and most Bqs have handels

I've made a couple of those and like them. Tons of radiant heat, but still smoky. These? Very very little smoke, but very very little radiant heat. So these are great for ambience and cooking, but not so good for keeping folks warm compared to single wall units.

How does this thing throw heat?
@ertyuiiknbvcx
@ertyuiiknbvcx 4 жыл бұрын
It throws heat up in the air, its not much for winter time use that way working like a thermos on the sides. You will likely get hotdogs grilled fast with this one. It has its uses, its nice in the summer when temp is very hot and you want a fire to make food without getting so hot, and most likely very good for soldiers in a war to hide the smoke while making food.

Why would you go through the trouble of making a video comparing this stove to a regular stove but then not bother to read the instructions or clean out the regular stove? How is that going to be an accurate comparison if you potentially didn't use it as intended? How do you know the smoke in the regular pit wasn't generating more smoke because of all the ash creating less air flow?

with the ring upside down, the upper air holes are blocked, preventing gasification. By not loading up with firewood, he didn't have gasification anyway, so you actually saw how it would work with the ring upside down.

Should have cleaned the old pot first to have a fair comparison. Embers in the bottom of the old pot cause more smoke. Obviously not a boy scout. The old one seems to burn slower so would use less wood. The same products of combustion are the same in both units so don't be fooled about less polution. For the money I am not sold on this.
