In this episode of Sailing Nandji, it is finally time to go chasing some waves. We set out on an adventure north from Noumea and surf some of the passes in the reef. Out of respect to the local surfers, we can not tell you exactly where we were though! Also we want to go come back one day and surf with noone once again!
We have some strong winds and some exciting sails as we fly up the coast in search of waves. There is some surfing action from a couple of spots however we were asked politely not to film the wave and put it all over the net, so only a few waves were captured.
Whilst on our trip, Bonita came face to face and a little close for comfort with Sea snake! She captured the encounter on camera which is very brave and a little closer then we would have liked considering we were in the middle of no where!

BEST EPISODE EVER! If I see a snake, I'm on the roof screaming like a 5 year old girl. I can't imagine having one on my leg in the middle of nowhere. I had a rattlesnake try to get in my kayak once. I exited the kayak and smacked that sucker with my paddle.

I want more surfing too!! haha but unfortunately it is harder to get waves from a slow moving boat when the waves are usually hard to get to. It is part of the adventure just getting there! At minute 9:20 you tacked with double head sails having not done it before.....couldn't really tell how you did it but.......if you pull your lazy genoa sheet tight with the clew up to the head sail as you come across the wind the air pocket pulls it through nicely......similar to what we do with a asymmetrical spinnaker

Great video. Bonita, I know how you feel about sea snakes. I worked in Swaziland, Africa as a Canadian volunteer for two years back in the late seventies. I lived in a mud hut in a rural district, which the Swazis described as inyoga country - translation "snake country" where there were plenty of poisonous snakes. In my time there I encountered about nine snakes that I knew about but I bet I went buy a hundred or more that were in the trees of in the grass as I walked but never saw them. I had a couple of really close calls with black mambas and green mambas and a puff adder. When I say close, within six inches of being bitten by a baby green mamba...I was lucky I jumped out of the way. I jumped so far in the air from my bent right leg that if I had been in the Olympics I am sure I would have won the long jump. It's amazing what fear can do. The second close call was on my motorcycle when a nine foot black mamba reared up right beside my motor cycle, definitely within striking distance as I drove by, thankfully the snake threw itself away from me. After two years I was happy to leave the snakes behind. On may way home I stopped of in Jamaica and stayed at a fancy hotel in Negril. I decided to go water skiing. As I was getting ready I was standing on a sandy bottom in waste-deep water when I looked down and saw a snake that was the colour of the sand with slightly darker stripes. I freaked out and took the water ski I had in my hand and tried to pound down on the snake. big mistake because all that did was stir up the sand and I could no longer see where the snake was. I stood rock still for about a minute before I started to move. I kept thinking: I lived through two years in snake infested and survived and now I narrowly missed being bitten by a sea snake while vacationing in Jamaica. What a joke? But my adventure wasn't over. The plane flying from Toronto to my home city of Ottawa, had trouble with the landing gear. You could hear the pilot raising and lowering the landing gear repeatedly and we stayed in the air much longer than it normally takes. In the end we managed to land safely. My two years of living dangerously was over. So Bonita, I'm glad you survived. It's strange that the snake latched on to you and even stranger that it opened its mouth while you were looking at it. No wonder you freaked out. I totally understand. How did you manage to get the snake off you?

Snake bites can be made non venumis with a taser, fyi you taze the nearest joint going heartwards first then halfway between the bite and joint, then twice across the bite in a cross fashion. Google it and get a taser for your first aid kit.

Surfin' and slitherin' and middle-fingerin',.. Ah, the crazy days of Spring (not too far) south of the equator, eh? ..do you consider it spring, or is it just ALWAYS summer out there? Or is it just windy and not quite so windy? ..Hawai'i is just wet and usually wetter, unless you're on the wrong side of the volcano, but it's always windy,.. unless it's not and the vog (volcanic fog) on the kona wind (south-ish wind) etches you eyeballs with its' sulfur dioxide and bits of aerosolized rock. May I be so bold as to recommend an Autohelm windvane rather than a Monitor? Depending on your steering configuration, you might have excessive friction in cable/chain, or hydraulic, both of which can challenge a servo-pendulum gear. I suggest an Autohelm or home brew variant(!!!). It has an auxiliary rudder with trimtab, actuated simply by virtue of SS wire in Teflon tubing (think bicycle cable) I was thrilled with my switch from Monitor to Autohelm. Give it a look. They’re both products offered by Scanmar. Keep up the great vids!
@FrothLyfeSailingNandji
@FrothLyfeSailingNandji 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the insight. We did not like the monitor because of the size of the unit. Nandji's stern does not really have the room for such a large unit and also we still want to be able to utilise the stern ladder, davits and keep the solar panels. We are looking closely at the hydrovane and think we will move forward with their windvane. The unit is much smaller and easier to install and should allow us to utilise everything still. Cheers.
@swashfrogsailor
@swashfrogsailor 7 жыл бұрын
Sailing Nandji - Frothlyfe, as long as you can cope with the friction inherent within your center cockpit arrangement (longer cable runs, more sheaves; or alternatively, hydraulics) you’ll be fine. Servo-pendulums don’t work at all well with hydraulics, but you probably have cable/chain anyway. I’m sure you’ll get it all sorted. In the meantime, you might be surprised with the effectiveness of sheet to helm. Just experiment. It’s a lot of fun to tweak the rig to achieve perfect balance, and it’s makes you a phenomenal sailor in the bargain. 😎

You guys are on a roll! Awesome story telling! Be very careful of those jumping sea snakes! ;-) Seems odd you were warned off on taking pics of the waves. Can the location be ID'd by the characteristics of the wave? Another great vid!

Thanks legend. I am sure you could tell what wave it is if you looked closely, but I understand their point of view. If I surfed that hidden gem with only a handful of people I would try my hardest to keep it that way!

Would ya mind doing the sea snake thing again. It really didn't show well on film. I think a bit of zooming in would be nice. And you know that if it's not on film it didn't happen. ;o)
