So strange that Rob can hear differences in active/passive pickups etc but can't hear how much he's overdoing the gain.
@JackInakiGago3 жыл бұрын
That's what i call Gear Snobbism. That kind of people usually don't hear those differences. They just say they do, and for them the most expensive gear from the most expensive company always sounds better. I've got to say that for AC-DC you just need a very specific gear tho. Almost the picks count there.

Claudio Campusano Rojas nope not exacly, even tough they are both 2203 models, the one i think you reffer too is JMP based, this one is JCM. Total diffrent circuits... 2203 just is a number Marshall uses to say its 100 watts and it has a MV. And eventough there are JMP's wich are 2203, Angus doesn't use them. He used the 1959 model (100 watt no MV) they say JMP too but sound way diffrent then the later 'big letter' JMP's.

@claudiocampusanorojas40906 жыл бұрын
Not really. You can distinguish between the two tones. Angus' tone was and still as traight up badass rock tone, while Malcolm's is more of that tight rock n roll tone. They complement each other, but one does not make the other's tone.
@joesheepy6 жыл бұрын
Claudio Campusano Rojas a lot of the impact in some of the riffs only comes from angus and malcolm both playing
@ghfdt3686 жыл бұрын
Matt has a very good point. They often blend their tones together because they played so tight and on the money, its sometimes really difficult to tell the tone apart. And Malcolm was an unbelievable guitarist but because he played rhythm for most of his career we never really got to see or hear his full vocabulary as a guitarist which I am convinced is there as its in his songwriting. Angus said many times Malcolm was a better guitarist than him. In many early AC/DC recordings and songs its actually Malcolm playing the lead guitar parts and solo's.

You guys should check out the original videos of the maker of this pedal (SoloDallas) playing this pedal with the correct Angus setup and gear. I love Anderton’s but they’ve not done justice to this pedal in terms of playing and gear used. Yes they’ve used an sg and a marshal, but there’s too much gain on the amp. Angus always uses his amps clean and that’s the way this pedal is meant to be used (if u wanna sound like Angus) . I’ve been following SoloDallas since 2010 and I’m a fan. He’s been an obsessive fan of Angus all his life and he’s probably the only guy who can REALLY play and sound like Angus does. Check out his videos and you’ll know what I’m talking about. This pedal is a great buy! 👍

Money saving tip: use a TS9 in line, but only a tiny bit of drive, and crank up the volume. It's a pretty damn close approximation to the boost and compression that the original Ken Schaffer unit had. Btw Solodallas (which was his KZbin moniker) is one of the best impersonators of Angus you'll hear, gets that whole dynamic fingertip control feel.

I have the Storm pedal featured in this video and it's f*cking excellent if you use it in the right way. In this case, they pushed the amp a bit too much and therefore the pedal didn't add much to the sound and didn't really achieve its full potential. A bit less gain on the amp (crank it too for best results) and (for me) both controls on the storm at 1 - 3 o'clock with the optical limiter set to 0 and you'll be sailing. You have to remember, this isn't just a cool pedal, it's a very, very specific pedal to replicate a very, very specific sound from a very, very specific artist and it does that very, very well if you dial it in. Once you find that tone, you will never turn it off I guarantee you that. Sweet video all the same, glad you guys (and a UK retailer in general) is stocking it finally!
@cheesefruit2006 жыл бұрын
This. I have the replica and it is supposed to be used on an amp that is just starting to break up NOT a jcm800 that is already at hair metal levels of gain.

If you want to get more authentic Plexi tones from a jcm800 - plug into the low impedance jack, turn up the master volume all the way and then use the gain knob as your volume and turn that as far up as you possibly can.
@camronme9175 жыл бұрын
i own the first version of the replica, and Ive got to admit, its an always on pedal for me, not as a boost or anything like that, i just like it for the slightest bit of compression and what it does to the ultra top end. all in all, im happy with it, tho something like the deep six would probably be a little more in line with what i need and for significantly less
@RockToneRevelry6 жыл бұрын
Why is everyone complaining about the JCM800 here? Back in the late 70’s, Angus was using 2203 model Marshalls live anyway. They only used JTM45 amps during the Ballbreaker era, 1996 or so. The rest of the time it’s basically an old JTM50 (which is incredibly different from a jtm45) or modded 100w superleads. Just use your ears folks, the 2203 is fine for getting in that tonal ballpark.
@jzmacfish6 жыл бұрын
Well mate, the JCM800 is way more modern compared to a 2203 JMP, the high end is much much more present. I'm sure they could have gone closer to Ang than what we heard, the amp was just prolly setup pretty shit for that kind of tone, so yeah a JTM might have done a better overall mix imho

Re. earplugs - when I went for testing years ago (even though I do not play that loud), I was told that it is dangerous to use ordinary earplugs because everybody is different in the frequencies they need attenuating by using earplugs. I have read the same thing since (do not ask me where - that was years ago). Not sure if this is the current thinking, but the earplugs I had made (which targeted the frequencies I am sensitive to) work well.

The amp you are talking about was a Black Flag JTM50 with Solidstate rectification. (basicaly a Marshall 1987 with couple of different component values.) SoloDallas make a replica of that particular amp too. But live its been 2203's for decades. (modded by the creator of Wizard amps)
@JimijaymesProductions6 жыл бұрын
Yeah thats the one although Ive read he still had other marshalls from those eras, a lot of people outside Australia mainly know ACDC for their mid to later stuff; Highway to Hell onwards which I believe like you said was pretty much all 2203s definately sounds like it to me especially Back and Black onwards. On the video its cool to get some of this stuff, alot of 70s bands were using custom made stuff, strange devices and modded amps and when people bring out new gear close to that (Laney's TI Boost based on his modded rangemaster is one such thing) it is awesome.

I agree with the comments that they're using too much gain. Angus' sound is a lot cleaner than people think. To get his sound, you definitely need an SG guitar and a cranked marshall. His fingers and attack make up a good portion of the sounds as well.
@SynZ7772 жыл бұрын
A big part in his sound is his speakers and pick attack. Most of the ‘gain’ you hear from his tracks is actually just speaker breakup from being loud.

It adds a bit of boost and compression. It rolls off the high end a bit. There is not that much difference between a JCM 800 and a JTM 45 but this is the master volume version and that is more gainy than a no. master volume Marshall. This is not the secret to Angus tone it’s mostly in his hands. On the video Let There Be Rock live in Paris 1979 Angus is using a guitar cable and he’s one of his best tones i think.

The SVDS (this circuit) was used in the studio for most of the Rhythm and Solo tracks of both those albums (confirmed). Of course, it's way overdone here. That's often the problem, the more gain the more sloppy it'll sound except you're a really good player (like Ang was).

OK, I used this device at my last gig a few das ago. Interestingly it works quite fine even with an Acoustic guitar,,where it is a great boost and has an incredible influence on the sound, some kind of "magic", I think. Also, it works great for my Fender Stratocaster, even using just an old Roland Cube 60 Amp. The improvement of the sound is, as I say, kind kind of " magic", so I use it either permanently or in Solo parts. So I recommend you try it out, maybe you like it too. I will keep it on my board! Best wishes, Uwe.

It seems to me that it may be an unfair A/B comparison of the bare amp against the pedal. It would be very possible to set the amp up to show the pedal at its best and have it sound underpar without the pedal boost on. The real question is does the pedal make a difference when the amp is optimised for it against the amp set differently to optimise it alone. Setting up that test could take some doing!

I think once again people have missed the most important thing. Angus gets his sound by the way he plays, his touch and his techniques, he also uses specific pickups most of the time in his SG's. Also smaller things like his guitar intonation makes a difference. Now im not saying the pedals are a waste of time, they will get you a little closer to his sound but still not that close, but they sound pretty damn nice other than that in my opinion.

If you check out the latest rig run down on ac/dc you will see the the treb,mid and bass are all set around 3 ( not 3oclock but set at 3 ) I noticed this a few weeks ago during a rig rundown binge 😂. But apart from that keep up the good work . From one of your biggest fans in Australia

This was a great commercial for the SP compressor! Add more top end in post, for live the audience doesn’t always need it anyway!

For ac/dc tune, the gain almoust to clean on amp....almoust means almoust...but maybe at the edge,between clean and a little bit gain....thats the amp...and use schaffer replika bout tunes on 6....and then punch hard and feel it....(old marshall is best on this thing)....always think clean amp,and let the schaffer help a little bit...and before you know it....you sound like ac/dc a little bit :-)

Thank heavens for actually doing a before/after demo - the Solo Dallas dude has like 8 million videos online, and they’re all completely worthless, as they do nothing to show how the device affects the dry guitar tone.

Literally the first video that popped up when I searched Solo Dallas. A video demonstrating the tone with and without the Schaffer Replica. Simple research mate

Isn't that the right amp sitting right behind the captain?
