Very helpful, just realized from this when you take the 1 4 5 over the major scale(3 notes per string) you get the chords and its pretty much nice pentatonic boxes you can play in for every chord, thanks man... it was staring me in the face forever :)

This is great! I love that you explain the where the licks come from. I feel as though I have a solid foundation within the petatonic scales and how the major and minor overlap but I always feel like I am lacking when it comes to mixing them. I wonder why do we solo in A maj/min over the A-G-D-A progression? Why wouldn't we do a maj - g minor - d major - a minor
@tomrabbani7 жыл бұрын
So you don't change to a G based scale? Just stay in the scale of the key?
@stevenwaynelee27918 жыл бұрын
please correct me if I am wrong (as I am a bit confused and my music theory knowledge is lacking) I assume you are borrowing the G major chord from the a minor key, since G is sharp in A major key. Does this mean that the chord progression itself is changing from A major to A minor? I really enjoy your videos. very educational!!!

Yeah basically. That is when it is great to mix the major and minor pentatonic scales. Thanks for checking out the videos!

I dont uderstand the chord progression 1 5 4? It should be A E D so how you could substitute E by G? G is not in the key A? It sounds great but I dont understand how it is build.
@Lost-xl6im5 жыл бұрын
G is in A minor pentatonic
@markcm4 жыл бұрын
I appreciate the tutorial here, although I'm still missing something. Maybe these are just basics that are assumed to be understood about the Key and the order of the progression played in this example.... I've heard talk about "1-4-5" and "1-5-4" but Here are my questions, assuming this riff is: A-G-D-A , is this the key of D and if so, isn't the progression 5-4-1-5 progression? And if that is correct, is there a correlation to applying this pattern to any other key in the same way? What I mean is playing a 5-4-1-5 pattern (in any key) and playing lead based off the 1 (tonic/key) and for the lead, play the pentatonic in Major over the 5th interval and minor (relative to the key) over the 1 & 4 intervals, then the major over the 5 again? So the lead in this case would be a bar of major pentatonic, 2 bars of minor pentatonic, and one more bar of Major, then repeat? Thanks in advance.
@metalfuryskulls9 жыл бұрын
This is great, love this kind of lesson and the chord shape solo stuff you do. I get you're playing A maj pentatonic over the A chord. ... and I can see how the A min pentatonic works over the G & D (many of the notes are the same as the G and D major pentatonics.) But is there a quick way of knowing which other chords in A maj would work with the A minor Pentatonic in this context? For example if you were doing a 1,4,5 progression in A maj, would you stick with the Amin Pentatonic for the E chord or use E major Pentatonic? Sorry of that's not clear!
@metalfuryskulls9 жыл бұрын
This just popped up on my twitter feed and explains some of the theory behind this technique of layering scales. www.guitarchalk.com/pentatonic-minor-scale/

Hey Brett - you use super slinky gauge strings don't you? Something crazy like 8's or 7's? Do you battle fret buzz with those? I hate buzz but I'm intrigued with the idea of slinky strings. Do you use heavier gauge on the bass strings?

Dude, your videos are awesome. They help so much. I love to play songs, don't get me wrong. But I love to just jam and feel the music primarily. Question, I was invited to play at a bar for a comedy show I'm in. It's a half hour and I don't want to play any songs because I can't sing and I don't want to F up because being a solo, I really don't learn songs completely through enough to be able to nail out 6-7 on such short notice. So I want to just play the blues and blow the harp a lil bit with some backing tracks going through the speakers. If you've read this far, what advice would you give me?
@mikkess9 жыл бұрын
+Jeff Tinkle dude play one or two songs to warm the crowd up then just take another song evolve it into a jam and just go from there. if its a small/medium ish bar where u feel comfortable that can surely work. if u fuck up just brush it off with a joke since its a comedy show ahha
@jefftinkle5509 жыл бұрын
Do you think playing the actual song behind me would be weird since it was just me? I was thinking of being more like the piano man, ya know just kind of like background music.
@mikkess9 жыл бұрын
well yea i see where ur coming from, trying to avoid dull moments between the playing and potentially the talking. if ur going for that loose jam type of thing that would make perfect sense as long you as make sure piano man there doesnt try to play louder than you ahha however if ur aiming for the song id prolly say the backing track or the progression!

Modes VS Major and minor pentatonic scales are really messing with me. This 5-4-1 progression is 'A' Mixolydian, for the 'G' Couldn't a person play G Lydian? (raising the 4th to C#. the 7th of D Major/Ionian..)then for the D, D Ionian? or instead of changing pentatonic patterns, stick to D Ionian for instance for "ALL the changes". using modes, Using 1 mode and targeting the rest of the changes within the scale pattern? Playing A minor to achieve a 'G' works fine, but that in my mind reflects G major as the parent key. "maybe only temporarily" But A Dorian is the 2nd degree/mode of G major/Ionian. Hmm any thoughts anyone?!

SOLOS in traditional blues & rock use Minor scales/ while traditional country uses Major scales. Why? Rock/blues melodies (the notes sung) are in minor, reverse for country. MIXING probably began with rock guitarists joining country bands without knowing the difference. Master guitarists like Brad Paisley mix in a FEW rock or jazz licks to keep it interesting..
