I'm Brazilian, that is, I'm also part of the American continent, and yet much of the United States is still mythological to other countries. In that bus scene I felt like I was witnessing a painting by Evgeny Lushpin or Linden Frederick. This countryside neighborhood aura is very beautiful, there is also a lot of that in Brazil, but in its own way. And our school buses are different haha

When I see vids of capsule hotels / trains in Japan, I'm so embarrassed for the US. $1k for this ride here. Expensive. Gross/dirty/disgusting, emblematic of many things, customer service, morals, values, on and on...
@izzieluv
@izzieluv 2 жыл бұрын
I think part of it has to do with how commonly it is used as a method of travel in each country. I could be wrong, but it seems to be a more common way to travel in Japan for just everyday type travel where as in the US it is more of a novelty and you take a train specifically to travel by train. Now I will say considering that it is a bit weird that they haven't upgraded more to make things nicer and more luxurious, but I'm guessing that has to do with revenue.

@@izzieluv Yeah about the upgrades on luxury multiple companies have tried that but they end up not being popular. You mentioned that people ride trains on a daily basis so the vast majority of riders are travelling for business, not for vacation. That being said a lot of Japanese transportation KZbin channels don't feature many of the higher-end tourist oriented trains that run in the countryside of Japan. JR Kyushu's trains are especially impressive in this regard!

Since you were paying the most expensive room rate, you should have asked to switch to the ViewlinerII. There's no excuse for that pounding door. I'm glad the trip overall wasn't a total disaster, though. There's a reason why most Americans don't travel by train (and we totally envy your system). You could have flown to Chicago for a lot less $$$ - like for $86.00 non-stop one way on Delta. The remaining $914 would have bought you an amazing hotel room. Thanks for taking us with you; it was very educational!

Going on trains on journeys which can be done in 3 hours by plane is dumb
@larkmacgregor3143
@larkmacgregor3143 2 жыл бұрын
@@sneedsfeed757 It depends on WHY you are going by train. I probably could have walked from Flåm to Oslo faster than the train ride took (we lost electric power at literally the highest point of the journey and were delayed a few hours), but then I would have missed the most amazing rail-side scenery in the world, which is why I went by train in the first place. If the idea is simply to get from point to point, then yeah, go by plane. But if you are going to see the countryside, a plane isn't going to do that for you. It's a shame our trains suck so badly. The USA is a beautiful country.

Glad Moynihan Train Hall exists. Huge upgrade compared to being stuck in a stinky basement (or as one guy put it, "One entered the city like a god; one scuttles in now like a rat"). While we may never get the original Penn Station back, this Post Office building was designed by the same architect behind the old Penn Station, so it's close enough.

I wish to apologize for the value of your trip, cost for quality vs Japan's trains, ours suck. I lived just east of South Bend, IN (Elkhart) about 20 years ago and loved it there. South Bend is the home of The Fighting Irish Notre Dame University. We spent a lot of weekends riding the South Shore Railroad over to Chicago to visit all the museums (Museum of Science and Industry is a 2-3 day visit (not necessarily consecutive) and worth the time. I'm from Rochester, NY and have taken the LSL a few times, both to Chicago and Boston's South Station. Compared to the Empire Service trains, the Lake Shore is much more prone to delays. Not the best long-distance Amtrak train by any means but the scenery alone makes it worth while!

I love your channel, because it shows how travel experiences _should_ be. In general, travel experiences in the USA are abysmal-as this video shows-and stupidly expensive when compared to an analogous trip in Japan. Here, in the US, the prices are high, the quality and comfort are bad, and the service is hostile, at best. In Japan, the trip is comfortable with good food and amenities, and the staff treat you with respect. The reason I don't travel often here is because the experience is always bad-VERY bad, compared to your travel experiences in Japan.

The video shows long distance diesel train travel which is logistically ridiculous and frankly shouldn’t even exist at this scale. Comparing Amtrak to all travel in Japan is nonsense, because Amtrak is not how 99% of people will ever travel here. That does not mean that all travel in the US is overly expensive or awful, that’s just not true.
@HeyIFoundACamera
@HeyIFoundACamera 2 жыл бұрын
@@Sogeking995 The only reason 99% of people don't consider long distance rail travel as a viable option here is _because_ it's so bad here. People do long distance rail in Japan all the time. It's not that it's unrealistic or "logistically ridiculous;" it's that _we do a terrible job of it._ We could argue about diesel vs electric (almost all of Japan is electrified), but what it really comes down to is reliable, comfortable, respectful service, which Amtrak doesn't have-and never has had. If you're not in a hurry, then long-distance (high-speed) rail is superior to air travel in every metric. The journey should be enjoyed as much as the destination.
@Sogeking995
@Sogeking995 2 жыл бұрын
@@HeyIFoundACamera I doubt that’s true. Most Americans have no idea what the state of Amtrak is, have not ever ridden and never will because a.) it is unreasonably expensive, and b.) it takes significantly longer to reach a destination than flying. The US is 26 times larger than Japan with its major cities vastly more spread out. Yes, there is a logistical reason why long-distance train travel is not as viable here. If Americans want rail service, they need to think of it in terms of regional rail that can take you to cities in neighboring states. NYC to Chicago is already pushing the limits of what feasibly makes sense in train travel vs. flying, both in terms of cost and time. It’s a similar distance of Sendai to Hiroshima, something no one would choose a train for if Shinkansen wasn’t an option and even then flying is cheaper and faster. The other alternative is to invest in high-speed technology beyond what Amtrak offers, but of course that is multiple steps down the road from where we are now with no dedicated passenger rail lines in most of the country. Rail service would be much nicer and cheaper if there were private companies competing for it as in Japan, and that would be happening if there was a market for it. Neither are true because of the reasons I mentioned above. There’s obviously a reason why so much more money and variety and quality is present in the air travel industry than train industry here, and vice versa in Japan.

@@HeyIFoundACamera You're buying the Japanese propaganda. The most popular vacation route in Japan is Tokyo to Sapporo (ignoring Okinawa). That's 10 hours by Shinkansen and requires a train change, and runs for about $211. If you fly, it's 1.5 hours, and $86. What do you think people do? I'm late to watching this video, but I am amused because I live right by the route this train goes, and less than a minute down the road from my house is an overpass on which this train passes every night. I was 60 seconds away and didn't get to say hi 😆 Also, if you search on KZbin for the railcam on the Virtual Railfan channel from Fairport, NY, you can see the 49 pass by between 11-11:30 pm EST/EDT (if it is on time, anyway). I have always wondered what this train was like to ride, so I really enjoyed this video. I would love to take it to New York City as I live on the opposite side of the state in the Western New York region. Maybe someday. At least I know to book a Viewliner II room if I ever do!

I took a trip on this train in the late 90's. The full route is from New Orleans to Chicago, or it used to be, with stops in Washington DC and New York City. We rode from New Orleans to NYC. The Viewliners for our trip were brand new. And, to the best of my knowledge... that's the train you're on. It explains why it looks like it's 20 years old (or a bit more). Buy the Viewliner a drink - it just became legal! Anyway, back then, with two of us riding, the trip was around $350 or 46,000 (I'm sure there's a yen symbol around here somewhere...). ROUND TRIP. We got to see Union Station - very pretty - along the way. These days I don't travel at all. I love it, but I can't afford it. *sigh says my wallet* Perhaps I'll move to Japan! Oh - "Goodbye Tokyo". I've got to remember not to watch your videos when it's quiet. I laugh too much!

Awesome to see you in the US! I was just in JPN so it's like we traded. You are correct in that the US trains are a bit of a pain. The biggest issue is that they are no longer a viable form of transportation, so they are not maintained or treated very well. Still it is an entertaining treat for those looking for something a little different. Look into the California Zephyr. Same quality, but many more beautiful views as you cross the country.
