No selfish bones here... Great teachers love their craft and really great teachers want to share. Toni is both. For those of us who don't play instruments but love music none the less, learning from these types of lessons, really helps the enjoyment. Thanks...

I also find the funny thing about Travis picking is that it goes, "I can't do it... I can't do it... Woah, I just did it." It's the most 'like riding a bike' technique. You keep at it and suddenly the fingers do their thing.

@@charlie-obrien As a beginner, a few years ago now, it never occurred to me that the thumb would do so much, and would be so busy. I assumed it was such a fat and clumsy digit that at best it might pluck the occasional bass note. But then I saw a KZbinr - possibly Marco Cirillo - explaining all about the thumb and showing how fast and nimbly you could make it move, and how to pick with the edge of it... that was a revelation.

I agree. I can Travis pick quite well also. I have been Travis picking for 30 years now but when a different time signature or picking pattern is required it becomes challenging to put the Travis pick behind. I can do some other very simple finger picking but this particular song is tricky. Is going to take me a while to get this (I hope)!

Steve Hunter might be the most under-rated guitarist EVER! This finger picking part in Solsbury Hill... Most of the guitar solos on Aerosmith's Train Kept A' Rollin... And the STUNNING 'Intro' on Lou Reed's live album 'Rock 'N Roll Animal'... It's a CRIME that more people don't know who Steve Hunter is or how much EXCELLENCE he contributed to the lexicon of rock guitar.
@davidthomas5035

I've always thought that Intro was the best Live jam I'd ever heard. Never heard anyone else mention it. Did not know the person's name.

Hunter is a beast. I first heard him on Lou Reed's "R&R Animal" as you mentioned. The first time I heard "Train Kept A Rollin'" I didn't know at first who'd handled the solos because the phrasing was way too smooth & polished to be Joe Perry or Brad Whitford. Later I learned it was Steve Hunter and that made sense. A total pro....

Quick question, is that a D28 or D35 or something else? I recently got a D28, and I always feel like it's too big for me even though I'm 6 feet tall, but it looks totally fine when I see others holding one.

Hey all! Hope this play-through helps anyone trying to get down this tricky tune in 7/4. It was brought to my attention that at 1:23 I explain assigning your thumb and fingers to specific strings, but a better way to describe the technique would be that you assign your thumb to the alternating bass line and the remaining fingers to the strings above that. The ring finger's only ever used to pluck the 4-note chords in the B-section. Also, as you’ll notice, some of the voicings are a little strange to hear at first without a bass or the rest of the band in there (e.g. the rootless F#m in the A section and Bm chords in the B section) but this is transcribed as accurately to match the guitar part as I could pick out from the original recording Peter Gabriel released in 1977. You should be able to play along with that by following this tab, which is linked to in the description!

I was twenty-four when Peter Gabriel released this in 1977 so I'm no spring chicken but Toni is top of the heap with this lesson. I've seen a dozen or so lessons on Solsbury Hill and Toni's is the best, her fingerpicking is superb and she's a good teacher as well now all I've gotta do is learn how to play it. It won't be easy as I've been playing electric for decades and we know what that means don't we? A new Hummingbird with 012s will test my strength.

Question please for anyone that is learning this: Is the A section missing something? Most tabs for this and other lesses show a different picking pattern for the first measure of the A section? I know I'm nit-picking a wonderful lesson here, but this section sounds off to me.

I was also wondering if the thumb pick is better rigid or more flexible for the bass strings. Thx, love your technique and style.

Hi Moma T - I enjoyed this video that you did! Right now I'm very frustrated with practicing . Yesterday I picked up my sons cheap guitar because I have problems with all my other guitars and it was a little out of tune so tried to tune it for 20 mins and did nothing but made it worse!😤 I think I just have to wait till I'm around someone that can help me get going because I'm better thinking how to play than I am to play it so once I get some feel back I should be able move along quicker than a beginner.I hope anyway!🐷It's hard to play with hooves on! Love you!😎⭐️🦄💋🌻🐅❤️🤘🦋

Another very well played song, thanks for sharing, I found it really enjoyable although I must admit I laughed out loud when you pronounced Solsbury as in "Sols-berry" rather than as "Sols-bree", of course, you are in fact correct in how you pronounce it, but as a Brit it naturally comes out with a phonetic abbreviation which causes the pronunciation to change to Sols-b'ry which sounds more like Bree cheese than to bury something, the same goes for Salisbury which is pronounced the same way lol. Anyway, I digress, you did a fantastic job here, I really love watching videos like this and watch them not so much so that I can learn what songs are being played in the videos, but what techniques are being employed, it is nice to compare my own technique with that of others and if i can pick something up that helps me to develop an original piece of my own then that is a bonus.

Toni, you are truly an amazingly versatile musician and person (playing, teaching, performing, and clearly a good friend to those who are lucky to know you in person). Thank you for taking the trouble to post this. I took up guitar a long time ago to accompany myself on the songs I was writing and for many years I remained a chord person also with reasonable finger-picking. I decided to up my game a few years back and have been learning classical guitar. However, I've decided also to go back to songs and learn a new one each week. This one's really good and your instruction clear and helpful especially with the printable chart. All the very best from London.
