Honestly, this has made my workflow SO MUCH better, and saved me heaps of disc space too. Also, recently I needed to go back and reopen a library to change an edit and re-export, and everything was there as I needed it and I was able to complete it no problems - the way I used to archive and store things meant I would have really struggled to do that. Thanks Nolan!

Tips: 1. Turn off background rendering. 2. Choose an external storage location for the cache. In other words choose a storage location outside of the Library. 3. Generate optimized media or proxy media only when necessary. As with cache choose an external location.

Another tip is to delete the render files. Go to the package contents and then select the video you're working on and go to render files and go to the "High Quality Media" When I delete all those files I have another 20 gigabytes to work with. Its so helpful just make sure your project is backed up before doing that.

OK hear me out... I organize my libraries by month on my T7, and typically have about 5-8 videos per month. I copy all of my original files to the individual projects. When I'm done with the month I close the library in FCP, go into it in the finder, and delete all render, analysis etc.. files for each project. This keeps my library count low, my original video files with my projects, and results in the same size files if you are doing it the other way. it seems more simple to me this way so i wanted share👍

Thanks for the tips, it's a huge help! Quick note: for long term storage, you don't want those projects on a single drive: drives fail all the time. You can run a little Nas unit which write automatically to two drives simultaneously in Raid 1... You don't need speed, just safety 😉

There is no option to Delete Render files. Any suggestions?

Great video - following your advice step by step. Got my new T5 in the mail today! Question - I don't see the 'Delete Generated Library Files", I only have "Delete Generated Clip Files". I assure it's the same thing, but I don't have the option to delete render files. Is that ok? Maybe just a different version of FCP?

Ok, I got it to work - thank you! My project is still 110GB, is that normal? Your project was less than 1 GB! Still made a big difference though, just wondering if I'm missing something. It's about a 24 min project if that helps. Thanks again!

@austinevplab71673 жыл бұрын
There's some danger in not copying your files into the library managed by FCPX. You have to be disciplined to never delete a file because it will show up missing in your project. When looking at your files with the finder there is no way to know if that file is being used by FCPX. I make a library on my actual computer drive for each project because I keep an external drive attached that is my Time Machine backup. My projects are completely backed up (not just FCPX's backup of pointers0 and when i finish with the project I move the library off the computer to an external archive and delete all the rendered media to shrink it down. This process works for me because I have a 1TB drive in my MacBook Pro and i only work on one project at a time, not like others that have to manage many customers at once.
