Solved - Jeep Won't Take Gas Anymore Pump Auto Shutoff When Filling Tank

In this video I show how I fixed (4 Year Later) my 2014 Jeep Patriot 2.4L 4x4 Latitude when it decided to stop taking gas. When I attempted to pump gas the gas pump auto shutoff would engage and I was only able to add a few cents worth of gas at a time. In order to fix this I used a hammer and gently tapped around the gas tank close to the filler hose inlet valve. This seemed to fix the issue and I didn't have to end up going to the stealership and spend $1,000+ for dealership diagnostics and a new tank. I hope your issue was as easy as a fix as mine was!

Well my experience is that I took my Jeep Compass 2014 to a mechanic. He said it would cost like $1700 to replace the tank to fix it. Found this trick about hitting it with a hammer. I tapped it pretty firm with a rubber hammer, and also around the filler tube. And it worked! Gas goes in real easy now. I was told also that not to fill the tank completely though, or the valve might get stuck again, so I fill it like only 3/4 full, and haven't have the problem for over a year.

I just tried this on my daughter's 2013 Dodge Dart and it friggin worked! Dealer told me $1600 to replace tank. Tapped it gently with a rubber mallet all over the bottom of tank and up by filler neck. Thanks for posting this!! I owe you a beer or 6!

2013 Dodge Dart won't take fuel- Unfortunately, the problem returned after one fill up, and I celebrated a little early. I have had to break out the rubber mallet before each visit to the gas station. I'm wondering if its cold weather related?(its winter in Ohio) I'm also going to try not letting the tank go below half filled and see if the problem exist if you don't let the fuel level go below half. Wish I had better news. I will try and keep posting. Good Luck to all..

@@jjcar99 JJ, first time tapping the bottom of the tank worked for about 2 fill up, then problem returned. Tried lightly tapping all over bottom of tank again with rubber mallet, put some Sea Foam additive in tank and it has been good for a couple months now. Weather has warmed up too, not sure if that has anything to do with it. 2nd time I didn't even put car up on ramps. Weird fix but seems to work! Good Luck!

I live in NJ, and as you know we aren't allowed to pump our own gas so for almost 9 months it's been a comedy/tragedy of me pleading with the attendant to squeeze just a little more in while they tell me they have to attend other cars. I was having this problem for over a month on my 2014 Cherokee. I investigated what I could without dropping the tank. Dealer was just going to start replacing parts. 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee here, skeptical when watching this, but it worked! Didnt know if I was tapping on the gas tank, or the frame holding the gas tank, but took a rubber mallet and pounded/tapped in a few places. No more auto shut off!

Tried everything and no fix. Just tried tapping on the white thing where the hose goes into the tank( accessed from in front of the tire) and went to the gas station and it worked. Thank you so much you made my day.

Man, you saved my bacon! I bought a used 2018 Renegade, filled it up three times at two different gas stations and could barely squeeze the pump trigger before it would kick off. I had to jack up the Renegade to find the tank and filler nozzle, gave it a few light whacks with a rubber mallet (basically just using the weight of the mallet) and then just pumped 11 gallons with the pump handle locked. @@alanahouston1428 the first fill up after banging on the tank was fine, but then my Renegade sat with a nearly empty tank for two weeks while I was out of town on vacation. I don’t know if that had anything to do with it but I couldn’t lock the pump handle on the next fill up, but it was better than before. I’m planning giving the tank another round of tapping before the next time I fill up and then I’ll be able to tell if it’s fixed or I need to take it to the shop

This really works! I struggled with filling my 2017 jeep GC gas tank for over a year. I tapped my tank and neck with a rubber mallet about 15 times and went to the gas station. It filled right up with NO problem. I tested it two more times since just to be sure before writing this. Thanks so much.

@@Cindy-ci Well, I noticed about a month ago that the problem was starting to come back. I use the same gas station and tried different pumps but it is getting worse again. I've since gone to several other stations with absolutely no problem but my best guess is that this fix isn't completely addressing the core problem. I am going to try tapping again and go back to my usual station (some pumps are definitely more sensitive than others). I would also be careful about overfilling the tank as the excess gas flowing out probably exasperates the problem.

Just did this on my 2014 Jeep Patriot. I have had this problem for the past 6 months. I tapped it around about 10 times with a rubber mallet not hard and it worked. I have a friend that has the same problem and same vehicle and he is gong to try it also now. Thanks.

WOW! I have replaced everything on my Durango Evap system and still had this problem. All that remained were the lines. I watched another video that also showed blowing air into the gas nozzle, tried that and it did not work. So I thought to give this one more shot. After watching your video, I lifted the car and with a rubber hammer tapped the tank several time near the fill line where the check valve is. I figured this may free up the check valve from any debris or realign that valve as well. And for extra effort, I again shot high capacity air into the gas nozzle cupping my hands on the nozzle at the same time to keep the pressure on. Went to the gas station and UNBELIEVEABLY IT WORKED!!!! Amazing and thank you bud!!!

Was having this same issue with a 2018 Grand Cherokee and it would take forever to fill with the pump set on trickle. One thing that worked for me was to put the nozzle into the inlet valve upside down (ie put the nozzle in the correct way then rotate 180 degrees ccw). I had no issues at all with the nozzle stuck in upside down. I will attempt to tap around the gas tank before my next fill up. Thanks for sharing this fix.

February, 2024 and this fixed the problem on my 2014 Patriot that I had been putting up with for three months! I have the off-road package which means there's skid plates in the way so I had my garage do it when they had it up on the lift. Quote to replace the gas tank was $1900.

Today is 10/5/21 and I did this at the gas station before I fueled and to my surprise this work like a charm I used a little pipe wrench and beat on it about 5-6 times maybe 25 lbs of force five or take. I have a 2014 Cherokee Trail hawk that I can not get the gas tank to fill either no matter can if the tank is empty or full. I am old and can not get down and under my car with a hammer but will try and find someone who can do this for me. I am guessing the dealer would probably charge big bucks to fix it.

It works ! Awesome video. 2014 Cherokee has a plastic cover over the tank. I Pulled the shield down 6” and used a rubber mallet to tap 3 times on side of tank by the plastic piece holding fill hose. No need to jack up car, just look underneath car behind back tire on passenger side. Really simple and quick. I actually did it at the gas station. Filled $50 of fuel in 2 minutes. Ha.

@@TimVChannel When it first happened and I had a friend of mine that was a mechanic look at it he told me the canister and the whole line would cost about $400 to replace, so I said fuck it and ended up taking 10-15 minutes to fill my tank for the last 4 years or more. I am absolutely ecstatic that I can now put gas in my tank like a normal human being.

Just in case you're like me and was slightly skeptical, definitely take this guy's word for it. I flew up the east coast to help my brother with this issue as the dealership wanted to charge him 900$ to replace the fuel filler neck. I figured I'd try out this videos tip first and to my surprise it worked perfectly!! I suggest a rubber mallet instead of a metal hammer, but aside from that I'm thankful for this video!

Aye! If this only works temporarily, you still the man! 💪🏾 Just left the pump, and after banging on it twice, it filled up on its own. I started and it clicked off, I remembered this video. Got a towel out the trunk and laid on the ground right at the pump. Banged on it with my fist, tried again it clicked off. 2nd time we were Gucci! Thanks! 2014 Jeep Cherokee Limited. Took off the filler tube and that didn’t fix it. Tried hitting the gas tank like suggested in this video but the skid plate was in the way and it didn’t work. I then removed a few bolts/nuts and proceeded to bang the gas tank bottom under where the filler tube was about 10-12 times. Went to gas station and was able to put 2.5 gallons in. Will update in a few weeks if it stays working. Thanks again!!!!!

1-28-2023. Removed 3 15mm bolts, 1 10mm bolt and 1 10mm washer to lower the skid plate, hit the gas tank under the filler section with a piece of wood and a hammer 3 times and then 12 more times so I don’t have to come back and it did the trick again.

Yep its the roll over valve stuck closed in the mouth of the tank. Might also cause a check engine Evap code on your computer. Usually caused by overfilling the gas tank and trapping the valve closed, till it finally sticks. After that, if you keep filling, the gas goes into your evap lines and soaks your charcoal filter.

Thanks so much! Fixed a 2014 Cherokee. There were some plastic aero shields under the tank, but I just used a rubber mallet on them and enough got through to the tank to free the stuck valve. Awesome stuff!

Had this issue on my 2011 Compass since fall. A 45 second fill job takes almost 3 minutes since I have to feather the pump trigger. One mechanic blew out the tank/lines but it is still doing it. Guess I’ll try this.

I am in this situation with my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, did the rubber mallet hit, went to the gas station and it work however the next time I had to fill up not so good luck, bought to do the rubber mallet thing again.

@@osvaldoguel yes! Worked for me. :) Occasionally when driving on bumpy roads, the gas tank issue comes back. A quick tap and it's right as rain.

I really thought this video was a joke but figured what the hell and crawled under my daughters jeep and beat on the tank with a rubber mallet then drove to the gas station and it filled right up. My mechanic swears I was lying till I showed him my own video of beating the tank then filling it up!

Yes, just took a long screwdriver and put it at the base of the neck where it meets the tank. Lightly tapped it with a hammer. Went to the gas station and the tank filled correctly. Save me a bundle!

“Hit it till it works” 💀 but I’m definitely trying this. I have a renegade and the gas pump issue is ridiculous. It’s been in the shop for two weeks. A jeep dealership actually told me they can’t fix it and I should just get rid of it. Another shop told me to gut my gas tank and get a new one...

I’M DEALING WITH THE SAME ISSUE. I HAVE A 2014 JEEP CHEROKEE SPORT. DEALER DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS : FUEL PUMP SHUTOFF VALVE STUCK CAUSING RAW FUEL TO ENTER THE EVAP SYSTEM UP TO THE INTAKE SYSTEM AND STALL THE ENGINE. THEY WANT OVER $2000 TO FIX THE PROBLEM. I BELIEVE YOU TAPPING THE PART IN THE VIDEO ALLOWED YOUR VALVE TO BECOME UNSTUCK. I’M GOING TO TRY AND SEE IF THIS WORK FOR ME. THANKS.

I have the same problem, on a 2003 VW Eurovan that has 300,000 miles that occurred on the 3000 mile trip between WI and CA. Now the van is with her with the problem. We can put 0.25 gallons of gas before it auto shuts off which means squeezing the thing 40-50 times for a 3/4 tank fill and not risk overfilling. I was convinced it was the heat locking up the evap canistyer and overfilling the tank early in our trip that caused it and was just going to wait it out with the cooler temperatures before having our daughter bring it to a mechanic. Do you know where the checkvalve is on the Eurovan?
