I'm only in 9th grade Algebra 2 but this actually made sense. And even though my math class itself is a bit stressful I found this video soothing. Thank you!

A fully factored polynomial should always be looked for any symmetry. Theres an x+1 x+2 x+3 x+4 theres a symmetry and if you are willing to investigate it often the answer will be apparent.(here its 1+4 =2+3 Lesson is to not be afraid to side track and dig into the question just because you cant see a way youve traditionally learned.

Symmetry can suggest a substitution.

My initial way was kinda slow. I tried to create a square term right off the bat, but eventually arrived pretty similarly. At the second step youre on here tho, a more elegant way would be to see they're two away from each other, allowing for (u+1)(u-1) where u is x^2+5x+5.

If you expand the whole equation you get: x^4+10x^3+35x^2+50x+24=5x^2+25x+18 😬😆

Andrew G you'll get 2 answers for "a", then u ll have to substitute a for x^2 + 5 = a. At the end u should find 2 answers for each "a", 4 possible values for x

Found a way to solve it just by watching 1 second of the clip. The trick is to multiply the left hand side in such a way that you get common terms. So here (X-1)(X-4) are the perfect pairs, and the other two remaining ones are the perfect pair. Getting a common terms X^2-5X on both sides is good since that can be substituted

Are the solutions x=-2.5+-√9.25 and x=-2.5+-√8.25 ??
@TheHuesSciTech
@TheHuesSciTech 4 жыл бұрын
@@kAngeLxD You're almost exactly correct -- except I think you forget to rearrange it into a proper quadratic formula first. The equations you get are x^2 + 5x + 2 = 0 and x^2 + 5x + 3 = 0. Notice the 2 and 3 are positive because you moved them over to the other side of the equal sign. Either way, you ended up adding instead of subtracting inside the square roots, so you got √9.25 and √8.25, when you should have had √3.25 and √4.25. Everything else you did was right though, the final answer is x = −2.5 ± √3.25 and/or x = −2.5 ± √4.25

Just to clarify, your original message "I tried to solve it and got u=-2 and u=-3 making x^2+5x=-2 or -3" is 100% correct. It's just that x^2 + 5x = −2 turns into x^2 + 5x + 2 = 0, then you apply the quadratic formula. (Same for the 3 case of course.)
