Me too! OMG. I've watched so many videos on bobbin thread jamming and not a single person mentioned top thread position. This totally explains why my machine works fine when I use a super size white thread (spun vertically) and jams up with blue thread (spun horizontally). Holy crap. I can't count the number of hours I've spent trying to fix this issue.

Rebecca Pope The extra spool pin also used for twin needle sewing or to hold a spool of a different size vertically should you want. Either pin can be used to put a spool onto it to sew with, but if you are a new sewer, stick with the instructions here first! By the way, always turn that big wheel on right end of machine TOWARD YOU when getting bobbin thread to come up from the bobbin case area to meet the needle thread , and give yourself a good 5 inches of BOTH threads pulled gently UNDERNEATH the presser foot and back of machine to avoid thread coming out of needle when you lower presser foot and turn the hand wheel toward you again to lower the needle into your fabric. Never operate machine with needle in up position or with presser foot up, snd NEVER turn that hand wheel away from you, especially once the needle has come into contact with your fabric. Hold BOTH bobbin thread and needle thread while turning hand wheel toward you and sew a couple stitches keeping threads pulled taut. This keeps threads from falling down into the feed dogs and causing "nesting" and a loud crunching JAM. Very bad for machine even though you can fix it in a few minutes. (Can break your machine or throw timing off in rare cases when machine operator causes this error, but quite avoidable with care taken not to let it occur in the first place). Hope these tips are of help to you.

I hope that will show you that Amazon is a piss poor eBay wanna be!! That said, you notify the seller and complain but first contact Amazon for return of product. I don't care if you just opened the box - if you read your manual and you are sure it is not an operational error ( meaning YOU did something incorrectly), then you need to return it for a full refund. Jeff Besos is a billionaire and it's his company that is full of sellers and many sell bad product. You get your refund and buy your sewing machine from an authorized dealer!! Do not even buy thread from Amazon who treat their workers like slaves and do not care about customers. You stay on them for that refund when they direct your call overseas. You be courteous but be strong in your conviction until you get your refund (NOT AN EXCHANGE!!). Good luck.😊

We had to tighten the top tension www.kevinsews.com/download/SingerHeavyDutyServiceManul.pdf see page 22 on how to tighten the thread tension. Then we had to tighten the bobbin tension to match. After that we had to baby it a bit to get the first stitch to catch and then he was off sewing his leather seam.

I have a Singer 4452 that I have been using for a few months with no problems until now. When I am starting to sew on a piece that has a fold and beginning at the fold the thread gets a top birdsnest and the cloth starts to bunch up. If I begin opposite of the fold It will go along smoothly even over the fold. I have made a slight adjustment of the presser foot pressure but it still does it. Could it be the thread tension? Or something with the feed dogs?
@kevinsews4 жыл бұрын
Scott Tisdale Use a scarp piece of fabric to start then join your piece of fabric right next to it and leave a small gap so you can cut the snip the thread between the two pieces when done.

Pull enough thread out of the bobbin case so you can hold on to it, along with the needle thread for the first 2 or 3 stitches.

So what about if the top thread is messing up under the bottom it’s not the bobbin the top thread isn’t locking in right on my machine

It can be that the thread is being restricted from wrapping around the bobbin as it passing through to picked up the top thread.

Thank you for the information on the post for the thread. The problem I am having (brand new to sewing🤷🏻♀️) is that that there is no tension, I have threaded the machine at least 7 times. The first time it worked great, but now there is no tension and it doesn’t change when I turn the dial. 😩

With the foot lowered when you pull the thread through the needle eye it doesn't have any tension?
@TheJudeJane4 жыл бұрын
Karen Whiteway Make sure you raise your presser foot all the way to the UP position BEFORE you thread your machine. Why? To open all tension discs so they can RECEIVE the thread. Then you can lower the presser foot if you need to AFTER you thread the machine. Thread your needle. Threading MACHINE and threading the NEEDLE are two separate processes. Hope this helps. Give it a whirl!! 😊

@kevinsews4 жыл бұрын
Yes, spend 5 times what these cost and that will solve all of your problems. Even if you thread it incorrectly, it won't matter. Use the wrong needle for the project? No problem. Right? In all seriousness...I have 5 of these machines that people sent me instead of throwing them away. I use them to teach classes and they all work just fine. I get them in and I have no idea what they were doing wrong. I thread them up with new thread and wind a bobbin; pop in a new needle; I then adjust the tension (that can be way off) and they we a perfect stitch. On one machine they left it threaded when the boxed it up. When I took it out of the box it had thread in it that was so old and rotten I barely pulled on it and the thread crubbled. It is amazing what people try to do with these machines. I've sewed 5 oz leather with #69 bonded nylon thread with one of these machines a friend bought. I wouldn't recommend using this machine for that purpose because it will burn up. But it did sew the 4 seams my friend needed just fine. I took it apart and tightened up the needle and bobbin tension and we used a size 18 leather needle. It took a little turning the flywheel by hand to get it started, but it did sew the seams just fine and he was happy. After that he went and bought a Cowboy Postbed leather machine. LOL I've worked on Berninas, Juki's, Janome's and Brother machines too. In the end they are metal frames (just like the 44xx series); they all have one or two nylon gears. It takes just as much effort to loosen the screws on all of them. The shafts and gears are all metal. I think the difference is when you spend over $1000 (sometimes over $5K) for a machine you it isn't your first machine. The 44xx series are simply to fix too. Bernina's are more like fixing a PC than a sewing machine. The other problem is for a $150 to $249 price there can't be much quality control. I tell people if they get a bad one just return it immediately. You would be shocked how many just put it in the closet at this point. I tell them if they get a good one and learn how to use it properly it should last them long enough to get your money out of it and move on to a higher priced machine. So far those who have followed my advice have been happy with the machine. So people you can never please through.

I have been having tension problems, this is a great place to start. I never heard of pulling the top thread until the needle slightly bent. Now going to watch your bobbin tension video. I hope you can get a timing adjustment video. Also, a friend borrowed my machine and didnt realize she had to adjust the stitch width for thicker fabric layering. The needle shredded my feeder plate and now my needle wont go to the right. I can push on the needle and and it will move to the right, but it wont stay there, it bounces back. Any advise for fixing this? I have to order a new plate so if there are any parts that would be helpful to have on hand can you give me a list? I live on Cyprus (the island) and there are no technicians here. I have to send it to Greece for any type of repairs, and the shipping alone is more than the machine. I am hoping I can do it all myself. Thank you so very much for helping us all out!

Got a new heavy duty and tried everything on the threading tension and still getting thread stuck in the machine and loose loop underneath. Could this a timing issue as we had to fix a timing hook issue as well.
@kevinsews4 жыл бұрын
Connie Moy One way to find out if it is a needle thread tension issue... try grabbing ahold of the thread on the top side of the machine to create more tension. If this solves the issue then it is definitely a top thread tension issue.
@TheJudeJane4 жыл бұрын
Connie Moy Always turn the hand wheel toward you and anchor needle in fabric before sewing. Moving the hand wheel away from you can cause nesting and eventually a jam. And hold threads taut in back of the machine bed before you make a few initial stitches. Then you can let go of them. But remember: this is a manual machine and the needle won't return automatically to the down position. Always turn the big wheel TOWARD you if needle in up position or you will have problems because that wheel was never meant to go against its purpose for being there. Some sewers find out the hard way, so just trying to remind you to always turn it towards you if you want to bring up the bobbin thread or if you are ready to sew and require needle to sink into fabric before stepping on the foot pedal. 😊

My issue (and I hope this hasn't been addressed earlier, and if it was, I apologize), my machine had a wonderful straight stitch when I first purchased it 7 months ago, now the straight stitch is more slanted. I unscrewed the presser foot pressure adjustment thinking It was one of the screws to remove the face plate would that cause my top thread to loop on the bottom?
@kevinsews4 жыл бұрын
No, that just adjust the pressure on the foot. Thread looping at the bottom is a lack of tension in the needle thread. Raise your foot and grab ahold of the thread on top of the machine; then pull on the thread through the backside of the needle creating tension. Then lower your presser foot and sew some stitches. If this doesn't fix it your machine probably needs a good cleaning. It is amazing what a small piece of lint can do to the quality of stitches your machine produces.
