I am Djiboutian, i understand most of the Northern Somali dialect, I speak the Djibouti Somali dialect but I do not understand the Maay and Benadir dialects. Somali linguistic varieties are broadly divided into three main groups: Northern, Benadir and Maay. Northern Somali forms the basis for Standard Somali. It is spoken by more than 60% of the entire Somali population.

Ali Ali Alu The standard dialect for text books and broadcasting is Mudug dialect as adopted by the Siyaad Barre and Shire Jaamac Axmed Juge, so stop making up stuff! When one says Northern dialect, the term refers to every Somali except those that speak May May and minority languages. The Northern dialect has subgroups including Djibouti, Somali Galbeed, Waqooyi, Central Somalia. Invest sometime in reading the works done by key Somali linguists.
