This is an om… the ancient Indian practice for calming the mind (meaning mind body as the yogic tradition is non dualistic). Plenty of research about chanting and the sound om.
@neetaarora7908 Жыл бұрын
Yes, that's what occurred to me. Om/ aum chanting works well in many ways, and 'bhharmari pranayam ' works more effectively for the traumatized. Worth looking up, and do practice well. It does heal.... releasing and reorganizing within for stability, wellbeing.

Humming vibrates/stimulates the vegus nerve. Nasal inhaling along with humming also releases a lot of nitric oxide. You can voo, oohm, or whatever you want. It's all about the vibration. Nothing special about what sound you make, but I would inhale through the nose and then hum, voo, ohm, whatever floats your boat.
@lifecarewellness-IL7 ай бұрын
Yes, absolutely @62sketch! The vibration is the goal.
@AriElfynАй бұрын
Absolutely, but not all sounds are the same. Aum is specific because of how the vowel shapes go from, totally poem at the back of the throat with the a moving through less closed middle of the mouth o, more a loses u, closing completely with the humming m. It’s something you can feel going from the chest up the throat to the face. Vu is very specifically for lower chackras, grounding, coming into your body, accessing your power in a way…there’s a lot more but just throwing that in… 🙏

This is similar to the practice of chanting Om/Aum as a part of Hindu/Sanatan dharma; it is an ancient technique that helps to calm the mind.
@lifecarewellness-IL6 ай бұрын
Yes, that's correct @Bappa108. Peter Levine borrowed widely from various traditions in developing Somatic Experiencing.

Thank you! Very relaxing. 😀 Is the "voo" vibration related to "Low tone" dorsal vagus?Just learned about "low tone" dorsal vagus. "High tone" dorsal activation causes the freeze response, which is typically what the dorsal vagus is associated with. There's also the "Low tone" dorsal vagus which helps us "Rest and Digest" and helps with tissue repair/regeneration while we sleep. While learning about this, I thought of the "voo" sound and wondered if it was related. And if so, wonder if doing this exercise would be especially helpful. (P.S. I do know that the ventral vagus nerve is also important for digestion and relaxation.)
@lifecarewellness-IL10 ай бұрын
Thanks for your question. Yes, the idea of Voo is to be a gentle stimulation to the system - to "break up" fixity. So if the system is "stuck" in high tone dorsal, the Voo can help gently "wake up" the system, moving the vagus into lower tone. In SE we try to be gentle with the system, titrating our interventions so the system can experience gentle expansion rather than more contraction.

Hi when I use Peter Levine's version for sound + mouth open and close. Then multiple vibrational sounds are created that vibrate from belly to throat. I find myself gagging and sometimes throwing up. Does this mean that the energy is released?
@lifecarewellness-IL20 күн бұрын
Peter Levine theorized that completing incomplete self-protective responses can discharge fight/flight arousal energy trapped in the nervous system. Whether or not that is happening as a result of you using the Voo sound is not something I can ascertain. I'd encourage you, @piekie1986, to work with a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner who could help you work this through - and perhaps titrate the experience so it's a little more manageable. Search the practitioner directory at traumahealing.org.

If it's stimulating, what tool can I use to settle down?😊
@lifecarewellness-IL7 ай бұрын
From an SE perspective, switching to something that temporarily shifts the attention away from the stimulation. So perhaps shifting your attention to a resource outside of you (e.g. the tree outside your window, the sound of the birds outside, a beautiful piece of artwork on your wall, etc.) or an internal resource (e.g. the memory of the smell of baking bread in your grandma's kitchen, the memory of the kind eyes of a stranger who helped you, the memory of an accomplishment you're proud of, etc.). When you're focused on the resource, notice the internal settling that happens as you stay with the resource. There is much more that can be done to settle, but orienting to a resource is one option. If you have difficulty, an SE practitioner can help guide you.

can anyone explain if this is the same as 'Vocal Sound Healing' concept? (throat chakra is blocked) tyvm in advance!
@lifecarewellness-IL2 ай бұрын
I know Peter Levine (the developer of Somatic Experiencing) has borrowed heavily from other traditions, so it very well could be the same or similar. I will say that the Voo sound is targeted for viscera rather than the throat, even though the vibrations will occur in the throat, too.

My anxiety extreme so can't hold breath & not deep but gotta start somewhere I'm miserable, cortisol been flowing from a main line water break for ??12 years & it's eating me alive
@lifecarewellness-IL9 күн бұрын
The only thing we can do, @fxrivrgirl, is start where we are. When I started doing the Voo sound, I could only go for a very short time because of low lung capacity, and I could only feel the vibrations down to my upper chest. My long capacity still could use some work, but I can feel the Voo vibrations down to my pelvic floor now. So a little practice - even one time - every day could move you in the right direction.

I am shure, you are a wonderful therapist. I am very shure. But... Pleace, pleace, pleace! Dont work with sound. I am a therapist (Developer of the Bio- Intelligence Methode. Before SE and much more). I work since 40 years with the physiological function of sound, breath and bodyfunction. The sound was my first love. We made studies with a university of Germany. Pleace dont talk about sound, also not about vooo without understanding the physiological function of voice. It is very, very complex, fantastique and very clear at the end. I am sorry to say. But the real function of sound for real healing through our body is somthing really different. I was writing a book about the secret of human voice and I work since 40 years with sound. Its not against you. But for sound, pleace dont go. Thank you.

Well now, I am most curious about your method and book - do you have a link to either so we can find out for ourselves? I do have to say this though about your reply: how can you tell anybody not to use sound for healing practices? Sound is the beginning and the end, it is what makes us who and what we are. It is the great gift and fabric of existence - everybody has access to it and nobody owns it exclusively or knows how to use it better than others. When a baby is born it knows how to use sound immediately! The way it is written in the ancient texts, the sacred tremor bringing forth existence (Spanda) translates into breath (Prana) and breath turns into sound (Shabda) when the Chakras are struck. Hence the intimate connection between Sacrum (Root, Mulhadhara) and this Vuu / Ohm / Hu sound and the awakening of the multiple bodies. But that's just the Vedic / Yogic approach.
