Sonic and Shadow is a pretty good fan game but has a lot of optimization issues for some reason.

Doom 1 and 2 have a free open source version available called GZDOOM. its compatible with a lot of games that share the engine like Heretic. It's really fun. I don't know if that fangame is compatible with GZDOOM though.

It uses GZDoom, and GZDoom is just an engine You're probably thinking of Freedoom, which S:L&L does support
