Bastogne Barracks has a number of places which are not open to the general public. Here are three of them, which date back to before WWII: A platoon bay, the Guardhouse, and the T13 crew home/garage.

You know, when this was in operation... if you looked out of those barracks and saw an IS-3 boys... well you knew you were screwed.

Pretty decent barracks. Not a lot different than what I lived in in the Canadian army in the 80s and 90s. Only real difference was we had rooms for 8 men instead of a whole platoon. Each man probably only had the same amount of room though.

I didn't have to imagine what the platoon bay looked like, I'm pretty sure they don't vary much between armies lol!

In Germany our barracks was a former military hospital. The outer walls were riddled with bullet holes. Then we moved to a recently refurbished barracks in Belgium. Plenty of space in those rooms for an artillery assistant crew of 4. They would have stashed at least 10 to 20 infantry soldiers in there.

Was I the only one waiting to hear an echoey "Hello?" from the Chieftain after the door was latched at the end?

We had a similar layout as the rapid response buildings in Montgomery barracks Berlin ,each company was self contained i.e. coy hq ,cqms, armoury and vehicle's ,it had been a luftwaffe regiments barracks during ww2

Looks in a far better condition than what we house soldiers in, in Denmark...

I stayed in a barracks on Danish Air Force base in the early 90’s. It was built by the a Germans during occupation. It was maintained but not remodeled. I remember the windows being what is called casement in the US. They crank out in two pieces. These were way better than the ones in my 1937 built home in Ohio. They were in perfect condition. The shower room & toilet room was also impressive. It was original. It was all functional.

The cells look like what was used in The Great Escape to hold McQueen.

they were out of wood, maybe you are thinking of The Great Escape II: The Untold Story with Christopher Reeve but I think they were wood also, but I only have the part 2 and its on vhs I wish the money used to make new crap movie would be used to save old films and digitizing them or it could be one of the many Documentary made about The Great Escape, but I'm sure I seen ww2 movie with cell door closing, that looks like that.

I'm guessing by the lack of showing that those fire poles have long since gone?

the buildings were not accessible when he did the filming (being fenced off and all), so it's anyone's guess

One question for mister Chieftain for questions and answers when you have time my friend: Why are so called Ost-Ketten not delivered to western equipment operating Ukraine? I believe Ost-Ketten are extremely wide tracks suitable for muddy terrain.
