I mostly cover how I used a 350 v8 GM Power Steering Pump to power the hydraulics on this tractor.
I created this video with the KZbin Video Editor ( / editor )

Cool project! I always wanted to monkey around with hydraulics but never did since I have a JCB 214s loader/backhoe and never needed anything else. I might do a winch or a lift in the shop with hydraulics. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work!

If you are going to use a power steering pump, you should use one from a hydraboost equipped vehicle. The hydraboost brake system uses the power steering pump for both steering and the brake booster, and has a higher flow rate.

Do you have any check valves to equalize the fluid flow to the two cylinders? Or is it just a “T”?

Another question for you.. I didn't notice at first, but that muffler is quiet. What IS it? Part 2 of my question,, I just acquired a 12hp Bolens from the mid 1970's, beast of a machine, but there's no vertical pulley system on it, it's a horizontal motor with a PTO shaft.. I really don't want to overload the small hydraulic system, so am still looking at the power steering pump alternative. A bit of difficulty trying to come up with a slow PTO to fast pulley wheel contraption. Any ideas?
@thedriver02
@thedriver02 7 жыл бұрын
the muffler is two pancake style mufflers facing each other about 6" apart with some tin wrapped around them. It works really well and not very restrictive. My thought also was to stuff the inside with something like steel wool if I wanted it even quieter. slow pto to fast I would think you could just gear it up enough with your pulley sizes. Perhaps 1 to 1 would even be enough off of the pto. My pump has a 6" pulley driven by a around 2" pulley from the engine. So off the bat thats 1:3 reduction which might be around where your pto runs. Good luck!

The pump appears to be mounted sideways - did you have to make any modifications to allow it to work that way?
@thedriver02
@thedriver02 4 жыл бұрын
No modifications needed, just to seal off the cap.

I believe clockwise looking at it from the front. It is from a late 78 or 79 chevy truck c10

Can you tell me the diameter of your pulley on the engine? Also, the pump really looks like it sits low. Have you considered using a more intricate idler pulley system to be able to mount it upright? If you left the first one in place, and added 2 V pulley wheels near the rear wheels and swapped the V wheel of the pump with a flat idler style wheel, the pump would be tucked up nicely.. And one final question.. what is your lift speed with an empty bucket versus a 50 or 100 pound load? Thank you very much for the video, and hopefully the patience to answer my questions...
@thedriver02
@thedriver02 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, I did think about mounting it differently but at the time I didn't even know if it would work for sure, and after all it is just a toy. Lift speed is pretty quick around 2 sec I'd say and it doesn't slow down much til you near 500 lbs, at which point you have tractor balance/strength issues.

I will be building a loader for my 67 sears super 12, where did you get your hydraulic rams, hoses, and control valve?
@thedriver02
@thedriver02 9 жыл бұрын
Demeron Ashton The cylinders were used, the hoses and valve came from princess auto, you could try online at Burdens Surplus Center too. Good luck on your build.

Any info on the hydraulic rams?
@thedriver02
@thedriver02 5 ай бұрын
They were shur lift brand from princess auto. 2 inch, 16 inch long for the lift arms, and I think 8 inch long for the single bucket ram.

Hey. Why did you split the return line? Just to have that tank on the back?
@TheDistur
@TheDistur 7 жыл бұрын
Also what size hose are you using? Cool project! Thanks!
@thedriver02
@thedriver02 7 жыл бұрын
I ended up splitting it because the pump was starving just being fed from the tank. So the return goes to tank, and also right back into the pump instead of all the flow going through the tank. Hope that makes sense. and the high pressure hoses were 1/4" and the return lines were 3/8" I think.

How much weight can it lift with the power steering pump?
@thedriver02
@thedriver02 6 жыл бұрын
Leo Melton it will easily lift 500 lbs 14 bolt gm rear axle. More than that the belt starts to slip and the tractor itself can't take much more weight. The pump is not limiting factor.
