Thanks Tom, you realy got me hooked on my guitar again after playing in closed E standard tuning for 40 years. The "sound" I found playing open G is what I was looking for. Gave me lots of fun hours on my guitar. And your tricks put me on the tracks. Again Thank you for your video.

Tune up the 6th string so you have 6th and 5th in unison. Don,t discard it like Keith. You will find it gives the guitar some amazing overtones and chordal possibilities. I always use this variation and have done for over 30 years. Try it.

I'm still pretty new to playing in open G; playing almost exclusively in it for about a year now, and I've been instinctively playing most of these tabbed chords without knowing much at all about the theory backend of it. Now I do, and can imagine expressing more in my playing. Thanks for an awesome video!

....every now and then you come across a "snippett" or two in a KZbin video that you can assimilate into your own playing.Stumbled onto this video during the boredom of yet another covid lockdown(UK).I play a lot of Open G acoustic and Electric, picking and slide, self taught,(66 years young).Your video has shown me WHY I play the way I do,and the possibilities of WHAT I can play next, and WHEN.Your ability to explain "stuff" is superb,WITHOUT coming across as too technical.I am now busy transposing your lesson onto TAB to incorporate into my daily workout routine (ready for when I can start playing again out there in a non COVID world)...I aso play a lot of Wes Montgomery octaves in open G(going up to a 54 gauge bottom E to stop it getting flabby).,keeping a slide on my little finger....Thank's Tom,wish you were nearer,...keep the videos coming...and stay safe!....SUPERB VIDEO,SUPERB TEACHER......SUPERB SOUNDING TAYLOR!!!.

Thanks Tom. I have been searching the web for this type of lesson. I used to be a very good guitarist untill having a stroke some years ago. The specialist told me I would never play again, but, I tuned to open G dropped it a step to suit my vocal range, and from, prior to the stroke, having at least 150 songs I can now play 5 or 6, My index finger is very hard to control so I use my 2nd finger in its place I will keep on until I can play as many tunes as before So thanks, great lesson.

caseypw1 - I know your comment was from a couple of years ago, but just wondering how you came along relearning the guitar? Have you considered recording what you did and getting someone else to play your songs just so you have a record of it if you haven't been able to relearn everything yet? Good luck. (BTW, not related to yourself, but I really like the videos from this guy. Learnt a lot and he isn't pretentious and keeps it simple and interesting)

If you hold the 2nd string 3rd fret and the 1st string 5th fret you get a 5 string G no 3rd power chord as used to great effect by Keith Richards on Jumping Jack Flash although in that particular example it’s in B as there’s a capo across the 4th frets.

Try using Russian 7 string guitar technique, press two stings with one finger at a time. For example in Am you have ring finger on first string, index on the second and middle on third and forth strings. In Dm you press first and second strings with ring finger, third with index and forth and fifth strings with middle. You can also try using your thumb, for example in Am press the basses on the second fret.

Question: If I want to have easier fingering for moveable chord shapes (i.e., shapes that move up and down the neck), then wouldn't I be better off with an Open Gm tuning (DGDGBbD) instead of an Open G (DGDGBD)? In fact, if I want to make easier fingering for 7th chords and m7th chords, wouldn't I be even better off starting with an Open Gm7 tuning (DGDGBdF) ? With Open G tuning, the fingering for a C major chord would be X55555 which is trivially easy to finger with a simple bar; but a Cm chord would be X55545, a C7 chord would be X55355; and a Cm7 chord would be X55345 - all of which are extremely challenging to finger. However, if I am in Gm7 tuning (DGDGBbF), then the fingering for these corresponding chords would be X55567 for a C major chord; X55557 for Cm; X55565 for C7, and X55555 for Cm7 - all of which are easy to finger.

Hey man, I still wasn't getting this whole open g (or any open chord tuning) but you gave a good intro to it. It's about playing mostly simple chords like (in standard they'd be) a minor, a major, e minor/major, and all these two finger sus chords, and the whole tuning itself is supposed to be jazzy or beautiful and I'm younger than you, so I'm actually newer to listening to rolling stones, so I wasn't the type of guy that was praising Keith Richards, but oh well. so, i just understand, it's easier.

When reharmonizing the scale how you deal with the VII-degree? Related to the key of G the VII-degree is a *f# m/b5*. Okay @12:17 you go up like this: x00000 -> G x02010 -> am x04020 -> bm [x03030->Bb ] x05050 -> C x07070 -> D [x07060 -> Dm ] x09080 -> em x0.10.0.10.0 -> F ! x0.12.0.12.0 -> G (I just put the supposed chord after the shape. ...and the changed for part 2 the C-scale in brackets ) Here the VII-degree is a F major in the 10th fret. Well sounds good but isn't that supposed to be a f# minor? So if ya strict and building only using scale tones it'll be: x0.11.0.10.0 -> f# ...for part 2 the C-scale you follow the same rule flatten the root of the *bm* turning to into a *Bb*.

I'm not Tom , but you would want to watch his video for Open D , since they are both 151351 tunngs. The ( Spanish) Open G is a 515135 tuning ( or 15135 if you're Keith Richards , or 135135 if you're playing a Square neck Reso , etc )
