Anyone from the USA watching this and wishing we had great things to find here? Seeing Tom put things back is painful. We just don’t have the amount of historical items here. I would literally love that kind of no takers. Love this channel!

You probably do have such places in the US, but its just knowing where to look. In the UK its hit and miss as to what area you are in, some areas seem to have a lot of big municipal dumps, and around London they seem to be spoiled for choice. Good luck with your bottle hunting.👍

Sorry for the pain. I think Paul is right, I follow a few channels who mudlark, creek walk, and dig for bottles and relics. Harder to find though, admittedly... requiring more research and legwork. Good luck, I hope you can find somewhere good.

If you can find any old city maps, you might be able to find the old dump sites. I remember digging an old dump with a friend of mine in Wisconsin.

Yes. I’m from Southwest Tennessee. There used to be places when I was a teenager. At age 68 I’m sad to see our lovely hometown is overpopulated and houses fill the old fields where abandoned buildings used to be. I have a nice collection of old bottles though.

That turpentine bottle would be a cool find since I do a lot of painting and DIY projects. There is one of those ceramic batteries I left at my local dump that I might get next time I visit. I'm very thankful for this great video Tom as I'm feeling very blue recently after a wonderful trip to my friend's wedding in scotland and lots of scottish bottle digging. I always get low after trips, back to traffic noise, reality and slight loneliness. I have exhibitions to enter this week, but I feel a bit lacking in experience and future prospects... Anyway, the miserable bit over, we found amazing things in Scotland and those glass batteries you found are lovely! (I agree they are a weighty object though). I hope you are well Tom? You have a lovely area of the world to explore. That squished insulator is a slightly rarer wide style of the screw top "pothead" style. Shame it's squished 😂

Sorry you're feeling blue Richard, I hope it's not long lasting. You're a wonderful artist, and I hope your skills and talents open up many prospects in your future. Glad you had a good time in Scotland, sounds awesome... I haven't found any dumpsites in Scotland yet, and I've been going increasingly frequently. It's much easier here, there's maps and everything 😀 I'm reasonably well, all the better for finally having finished the video... been a bit low and blue too.

@@tomburleigh9261 Hopefully your mood improves too then! If you are ever in scotland at the same time as any of our trips, you'll be surprised how many great dumps are there. Mainly old sand/gravel pits and a much bigger dump we dug deep at and filled in again nice and neat. Cream pots etc and a sadly smashed rare fat cobalt hobnail poison. Thank you for the kind words, I find the bigger issue is needing things to sound good on a list. Job experience is valued more than actual ability these days... Let me know if you venture my way at all 👍
@tomburleigh9261
@tomburleigh9261 10 ай бұрын
@@richardserridge2767 Ah yes, the whole experience vs actual abilities thing. Might be part of the reason I went down unusual paths that didn't require me to deal with employers or gallery curators. Not really recommending it, I'm not really earing a living yet through my creative output, but possibly on my way now with KZbin being the central thread of the weave. I'm hoping to get my phone sorted sometime soonish, so I can head over to Blitz Beach this autumn, and I'll give you fair notice so we could meet up there if you'd like. It's the Wirral you're on isn't it? Haven't been there for ages, but me and my Girlfriend are thinking of a drive down through parts of North Wales, then to Shrewsbury, and then across to the Pembrokeshire Coast. Might be a possibility to visit Wirral along the way. 🙂
@richardserridge2767
@richardserridge2767 10 ай бұрын
@@tomburleigh9261 That would be brilliant! I have a local dump site to visit if you like and blitz beach is a good option too. I'm not earning a proper living and I'm yet to register as self employed, but if I sell another painting soon I will! Finding drive is often hard for anybody introverted, but we'll work it out eventually!

I've made many terrariums and had good results using bottles like the large, light green, bottle, but with one caveat. You have to use the correct plants. Undergrowth plants, like ferns, mosses, club mosses, and even woodland violet, tend to do just fine in glass with a light green cast. It isn't much different than the light that filters though dense tree leaves. Just keep your terrarium out of direct sun so it doesn't overheat. I haven't tried amber glass, or any of the darker colors, and I have doubts about them. I don't think the plants would get enough light, in the right wavelengths, to thrive. If you feel lucky, it might be worth a try, in the name of science. (You might be able to get a mushroom garden to grow.) Best of luck. I warn you though. Terrariums are habit forming.

It a joy to see you have given yourself a little more permission to take additional finds. If it were me I would need a wheelbarrow so much to see and choose from. It’s as if the earth is returning all the buried dumps back to the surface.

It's unfortunately gone now, the bulldozers came, and there's a business park going up on top of it. Still, I've got a few more videos filmed there to edit, lots more finds from a very generous place. 🙂

Loved the video, by the way, I always loved cod liver oil and also cod liver,when I was a baby in the 60,s. I had a lot of it and my mum always says I,m not normal,because just the smell made her vomit and I would ask for more, even now I like it on bread😂😂

I made a terrarium in a 5-gal aqua water bottle in the off-year between high school and college. I went away for collect, but tended it every summer throughout the 4 years of school. The plants did very well for me.

Ah, wish I could find a 5 galon bottle 🙂. I do have some demijohns, but the neck is too narrow. Glad it worked well for you, I'm deeply impressed by people who do Terrarium channels, like Serpa Design, it looks like such a relaxing and wonderful hobby. 🙂

Ideas for the dutch basket : frozen Charlotte bodies or heads or doll eyeballs. I believe it was a planter hence empty for the plant.
@carolrayk
@carolrayk 10 ай бұрын
Make a wire stand for that narrow blue bottle so it will stand upright. The blue Dutch boy, he's so intact, it would be ashame to alter it. It could be a toothpick holder, planter or hold whatever. You found some very nice things at that dump.
@tomburleigh9261
@tomburleigh9261 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for the suggestions, I think a wire stand is the way I'll go with the bottle. The blue Dutch boy might get a repair, and something to fill the basket. 🙂

Thanks Julia. I think bird head seems like the likely choice 🙂. Not sure if the basket is really big enough for most plants, and no drainage. Maybe an air plant, or cactus, but I don't have much success with either of those.

Tom. It's so good to see your post, it's been a while. I hope Phil is doing well now. That site looks like a WW2 bombing. Most bottles diggers fill in where they have dug, I find this disturbing. Take care, you are a solace to me. Cheers, Rik Spector

Cheers Rik, it's been a rough few months, but it does feel good to have gotten this video finished and up. 🙂 I agree, it looks a sorry state... I think the bottle diggers were in a race, to get what they could before the bulldozers, which have indeed taken that site now. Still, that's no excuse for some of what they did, like leaving platic bottles around, and smaller plastic bits that the breeze could easily carry off. I hope you're keeping well, Warm regards, Tom.

I agree. Waste is ugly. I was at the seashore. We have an anemone that is called "sand dollars". If they are green or reddish, they are alive, and by law, to be left alone. I've seen sand pails full thrown up on the hot sand. The cancan girl needs a moth's head with moth wings and fuzzy antenna.

That's so sad, that people would do that. It was sad on a recent beach trip when we found hundreds of washed up sea slugs. We rescued dozens, but couldn't save them all... but the idea that people would do that without a thought is sadder than nature doing it. Thanks for the vote, I'm not sure how I'd do fuzzy but I like the idea 🙂

I educate kids as I walk the shore line. I had a young boy from the middle of the US, who had never seen a sand dollar. He had two live ones. I showed him how to release them, and then gave him a deceased white one to take instead. He hugged me. Made me happy.@@tomburleigh9261

I absolutely love your videos. Your voice is very soothing and i enjoy it very much. I am concerned about those open holes in the ground (i know you didn't dig them) that someone may fall into one and hurt themselves. Or some poor animal falls in and can't get out and staves. Some are concealed by the vegetation. Please do be careful.
