I was a Dead Head from the 70s on. In the late 80s, I got a job working for the stage lighting company, that did there shows. Workers at the company would get free tickets to shows, and some who were not into the Dead, would give them to me. I would then give them away, to Miracle seekers outside the shows. The shows, and the folks gathering/camping in the parking lots, were the best of times, for this aging hippie. Now I am a keyboard player, in two Grateful Dead tribute bands, living my dream. The music never stoped🎶☮️❤️🎹😻

My son just turned 21 and asked if I’d ever heard of the Grateful Dead. I said yes, one of their songs was our prom theme song back in the day, and I’d been fortunate enough to see them twice while Jerry was still alive. He said there was this band, Dead and Co that he wanted to go see, so I bought 4 tickets. I took him, me, and my other son’s fiancé so that left an extra ticket. We were in line to park and they both look up out of their phones and see people walking with “I need a miracle” signs so my son asked “What’s up, what’s that for?” I smiled, rolled down the window and said “I’ve got one” and this young man came running over, super excited, and offered me a $100 bill. I told him “Nah, can’t do that to a fan, jump in the car and let’s get this ticket transferred” (because there are no paper tickets anymore.) He was beyond happy to get a free ticket, talked about how he’d followed the tour from the start and that his mom had introduced him to The Dead. He was so happy, he practically skipped away after saying thank you about a hundred times. We were still waiting in line to park, my kid looks at me and said “What just happened?! I said “If you think that was crazy, just wait until we get to the parking lot.” 😂 It did not disappoint, it was a giant party almost like I remembered. We had such a good time, truly universal music!

In desperate need of a ticket I walked about a mile from the Theater one way, came back and went the other way and back again flagging people down on the sidewalk and cars but to no avail. Now, back in front of the Theater I let out a big sigh! "I Need A Ticket!" I implored the cosmos. Just then a pleasant guy said "Excuse me, here's your ticket! Enjoy the show". They open with Casey Jones and Jerry forget the words. Memorable to say the least.

A deadhead isn't something you can become watching KZbin videos... Get out an experience the life. You have one more chance. This year coming could very well be the last time you'll be able to experience the remaining members together on a tour. I promise you. If you've never been, it's not something you want to hear about the rest of your life without understanding what people are talking about. It's not just a show. It's a way of life. Don't die on your couch wishing you had gone. Go.

Went to only one show and that was at the Rosemont Horizon in Chicago in 93. The outside area was very eye opening, amazing and a lot of fun Then I hung out with a guy from 95 to 98 going to raves that toured with the Dead from 93 to 94. He told some very interesting stories. One of them I'll never forget was he drove an Isuzu Pup and picked up Dead Heads heading to the next show sometimes across the country. He'd have about 10 or 12 at a time in the back of this little truck sometimes he said. The cops would pull him over and give him gas coupons and tell him to leave the state. The cops always knew they were all Dead Heads. Then when Jerry died he said a lot of his friends wanted to stop and move to Hawaii.

I have great respect for the tapers. Put in a lot of time and effort and they were there because they loved the music and we have every note the Dead played easily accessible because of them. And I know it's not popular to say, but there was just so much complete nonsense with a large part of the deadhead population. The most frustrating part of it is how many of them made Garcia in to an almost mythical, iconic figure who was literally worshipped. Garcia is on record several times expressing his frustration and displeasure with this and that he longed to just be viewed as a regular guy and musician. Unfortunately that could just never happen and it continues on to the present. If folks want to truly honor his memory than they should stop with ridiculous worship and praise as if he were a divine prophet .
