I am sixty years old and my reason for getting back into math is to figure out how to grow one million calories of food on a half acre garden plot. It is very hard to do, and few people are able to do it, aside from commercial farmers. There are so many variables and skill sets involved. I recalled that the time that my brain was the sharpest was when I was taking math classes in college. Growing any significant levels of food takes sorting out all these variables. In order to sort out these variables, it became apparent that I have to be able to think and process information at a higher level. I want to have fun getting back into math, so I bought me several antique slide rules to learn and master. After looking at all them numbers on the slide rule, I realized I have to start from the beginning. And here I am. I picked up the Norman Pre-Algebra and Algebra book to start again from the beginning.

I'm starting over at the beginning as well. So far Chris McMullen's Essential Pre-Algebra Workbook has been a great asset to me. While his books don't cover everything, I love his simple explaining style, and all the questions have answers in the back of the book. I think it was in Math Sorcerer's video about algebra workbooks, or workbooks in general, that Math Sorcerer had recommended another workbook by McMullen, but for a higher level of algebra than what I'm currently on. But I love this book so much I'm thinking of getting a Chris McMullen workbook to supplement every level of math I study, since he's written one for so many different fields in math.

Thank you for your Videos. I am in my late 30’s and recently earned my Ph.D. Always been a mediocre student, but one principle that helped me throughout was to just get going with work in a religious way Similar to how a religious person doesn’t question practices of faith. You just keep doing without necessarily considering how you are feeling about doing that task.

Honestly, my reason for starting self study in math was boredom. Algebra was something new and I was really surprised I could do it. Algebra has turned out to be easier than I thought. The computations in algebra are easy. I don't say that to be arrogant or appear better than I am at something. So now I'm going on to Calculus for a challenge. My reason for it has changed because I'm going to take online math classes. I got a text/message about his Instagram, but wasn't sure if it was really the sorcerer on Instagram or scammer using his name on a fake page. But he says in the video he has an Instagram so its probably its him. I suggest people live their life how they want and do what they want so they don't have regrets. We are not getting any younger. Yes, you might be 50 by the time you get the degree, but you'll going to be 50 anyway regardless whether you spend 4 to 5 years in college trying to get the degree. So go for whatever you want if you think its best for you. Life goes by too fast and you will never get time back.

One piece of advice I'd like to add onto this wonderful video is to have mathematical variety in your mathematical diet. It is so much easier to achieve that 1 problem a day if you have several interesting topics to choose a problem from. Right now in my line up I have graph theory, probability, combinatorics, and some logic books to choose from. The variety helps me to keep going.

So, that's kind of from enemies to lovers story: Few months, years what ever ago at my highschool freshman year (i hope i didnt mess up, i'm not from US, I year of highschool) i dont really liked math it was boring, stupid stuff, but one day (few months ago) I discovered intergrals, and few people said they're insanly hard, then stupid I without any knowledge about them just knowing power rule from youtube video, and finding few thorems in internet managed to get into it and solving them for fun (of course i had lacking knowledge like natural logarith (ln) derivatives etc.) , So kind of the integrals made me love math, right now, i'm getting pre calculus with stewart book to fix these lacks of knowledge i have and i find it really fun! These problems rocks!

Education has given me a nice standard of living and I don't have to kill myself with labor doing it. How is that for motivation. I don't have to depend on anybody. Math requires a lot of personal sacrifice. I took Udemy classes before taking the actual class. It made a big difference. When you take the actual class you have time limits and schedule you must keep up with. So learn as much as you can BEFORE take the actual class.

I studied technical physics 13 years ago failed after first year, over the years I returned to math and physics now a tgen but never really went past real analysis and abstract algebra. A week ago I decided to get up to speed so I picked up my calculus a complete course and working my way through it. I’m surprised how fast I can go doing 7 exercises per sub chapter. I do pomodoros in the morning 2 to 3 hours focused study. I use chatgpt to discuss my ideas, recently I am envisioning physics where time is an emergent phenomenon so is spacetime, it’s just a consequence of mass energy in relativistic motion. The plan is to work through all my books to refresh knowledge and then I am ready to jump into the deep end like differential geometry

The thing that helped me was giving myself homework, and basically doing a specific set of problems (it doesn't have to be just math, it can be computer programming, etc.) and doing a variety of exercises each time, every day, that encompasses a good variety of concepts so that you don't forget things. Then, just play around with really big numbers and really small numbers, each time you do these exercises. Then, also try to see patterns in whatever you're doing. By doing lots of variations and playing around with your variables (the number that changes in your formulas that you use to play around with), you should start understanding what you're doing better, and then it stays with you.

I don't have a lot of knowledge about "achieving goals" etc or how to motivate yourself. But I do like the idea that discipline is not a feeling or an inclination, but an achievement, something you learn to do specifically for that one task, subject etc. It's no innate thing that people have or do not have or are born with (so someone can't judge you based on it), but discipline is something you managed to show and do for something. And it's a challenge for everybody. And when you do discipline, you do at at least as good as anyone else in the world. Because we are no robots. So discipline is not something you can lack. Because it's something you do.

My tutor says it might take right hours of studying a day. That’s how badly I want to understand mathematics. I want to learn it for the sake of loving learning and math and hating the fact I missed out earlier in life.

Math has always been a living hell for me. Some people are just better at it than others. I had to WORK and WORK until I was half dead practicing math every single day. I worked a job and studied HOURS and HOURS on math problems. Regardless I had to take math classes for my grad degree, and now I passed my national board certification in psychiatry and state licensed as a practitioner. Let me emphasize your future employer -- some WILL ask for your official transcripts. Especially corporations. GRADES DO MATTER! Do not just settle for "just passing". When you make As in math that is the most impressive. YOUR GRADES ARE A PART OF YOUR PERMANENT RECORD AND IT FOLLOWS YOU THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!!! Remember that. So if it kills you in the process, make good grades. As in MANDATORY.

Personally, I feel I have a good amount of discipline. For example, I can work on math with my phone right next to me and not get distracted at all. However, I feel my motivation is best used to spontaneously plan what to do in the near future because if I say I'm going to do something, I will at least try to do it when I plan to (which is a specific ish time (I built a spreadsheet to schedule my day based on what time I get up)). I'm not a person that works spontaneously. I'm a methodical grinder by nature. I define freedom as the ability to impose your own structure. With that and my lack of spontaneity in mind, the next part of my journey is perfecting my structure. Which is what I'm working towards steadily while familiarizing myself with Abstract Algebra the best I know how to.

Completely different angle here; but I was in what a lot of people consider to be a cult. I woke up one day at 40 years old and got this terrifying thought; what if they're wrong? Shortly afterward, everything fell to pieces. Now, 10 years later, I'm trying to do the things I wished about, but that I rejected for 30 years while in the cult. At 43, I was like, " oh my god, I've wasted my life ", but even though I felt that way, moping about it was solving nothing so I just began doing things, including beginning to study maths. Even if you think you've wasted a lot of time, just pick a thing and go do it if you have the physical and mental capacity. The last thing you want is to be in the same place five years later still saying 'oh sh*t I've wasted even more time now'.

I liked your other hairstyle better when it was untied. The only way I can motivate myself some days, is to find something to measure or calculate. If I cannot come up with the ways to find the answer or have to search or find the mental tool to solve the question, I usually give up. As of now, i'm stuck on conversions. I try this (5/9) 1.8 • C° + 32° = x 17.6 C° • 1.8 + 32 = 63.8 I cannot understand how to convert the fraction 5/9 into 1.8 so I just have to guess. It is a dreadful feeling knowing you could possibly solve it with an equation/formula but you don't quite understand how it unfolds. I use math overtake my depression and most negative subconscious thoughts. Like I was saying, this exercise is effective only when I succeed. Apparently having an organic brain has its pros and cons. ಠ︵ಠ

Kind of unrelated to the video, but I really think you look good! The beard looks cool and it looks like you've been hitting the gym which is awesome. Great video and advice as always.

Hare Krsna! Good evening, dear teacher. You are like a guru to me, as I always follow your advice, so I send my respects and thanks for always motivating us to move forward. I have a question: What do you recommend for me? I always study by doing the exercises that the authors do in the books, but sometimes I don't get the same result as the author, and that makes me spend more time trying to figure out what technique the author used to obtain that result. From the Dominican Republic. Hare Krsna.

I was studying "Introduction to Stochastic Models," 2nd edition, by Goodman, when I stopped to watch this video. Sigh.

Distinguished Math Sorcerer, I wanted to know how to remove the fear of mathematics ... let me explain: I have many gaps in mathematics and I absolutely want to fill them, first of all for myself and then for a possible future enrollment in mathematics. However, I am very scared (perhaps it's just stupidity) ... I tried, so to review something to redo 1-2 really basic exercises and besides the fact that I failed (which highlights my gaps) I peeked at the solutions and they were written in a way, in such a way that I said to myself: “either I'm really ignorant or really stupid, but I would never have been able to give an answer like this…”. I don't know if this has ever happened to others. How can I remove this fear of mine? I really want to learn math well. Thanks 🙏🏻

Hello Math Sorcerer. For some reason my comment got deleted and I am writing it again.I am from Kazakhstan,I have a degree in bachelor CS profession but I didn't like what I chose and 2 month ago I decided to change my profession. Not sure how it works in your country,in Kazakhstan we pay to get tested for master's degree(I think that's how it's called,in our country it is called magistratura). There are 150 questions,50 for English,30 for Analytical/critical thinking and ability to read/answer question from studies and texts,30 for Math(Calculus 1 and 2, Differential equations,Linear Algebra,Analytical Geometry,Probability and Statistics) and 40 for Methods of teaching math for students. In most of the days I studied 2+ hours and took breaks only when my head would start hurting. And the discipline and motivation I developed during these days is all thanks to you.I randomly found your channel and I am super grateful for you.Pls keep doing more videos, they are very helpful for us still green and young students:)Also,I see you workout, you are in a great shape. Most professors don't work out or look as fit at your age, good job man.Keep it up.Also, why don't you react to a video Alan Becker made recently about Math,a lot of math channels are getting good views for reacting to his video(Alan Becker is an animator and he has a lot of subscribers, maybe that's why).I think that would be great to watch for your viewers.Sending some love and positive vibes to anyone reading this! PS I got 22/30 from Math section🎉

Yo mr math man, I’m currently trying to self teach myself math up to calculus(currently a couple units into pre calc). But here’s the catch, I’m using pretty much only Khan academy and taking notes in between videos. Is this a good idea?

Neither is incorrect, it just depends on where you're from. In the US and Canada, people say "math", but most (all?) other English-speaking countries use "maths".
