The show eschews spending time on backstory in favor of character building, which is a good choice given they have only nine episodes. Some background on Pilltover and Zaun would've grounded the story a bit more though. I had to look that stuff up for myself because I was left wondering. It's not really a spoiler, because season 1 only hints at this, but I’ll put it after the break, just in case: Zaun and Pilltover were originally one city (called Zaun), located on an isthmus between two oceans. The rulers wanted to increase trade opportunities by reshaping the land around the isthmus. A thousand Chemtech bombs where detonated to achieve this, but the plan failed catastrophically: A large part of the city sank due to earthquakes triggered by the explosion, killing thousands. The remaining city profited from increased trade and became Pilltover. The sunk parts were eventually rebuilt in the fissures and canyons created by the earthquakes, and became Zaun, also known as The Undercity or The Fissures. Zaun and Pilltover then developed a somewhat symbiotic relationship: Trade from Pilltover brought some measure of wealth to Zaun as well, and Pilltover profited from having a place that was less regulated. Black markets thrived, there was room for experiments that would’ve been shut down by Pilltover laws. Less regulation also allowed factories built to produce cheaply without regard for the pollution of both ground and air. The Zaun of today is a place where chemicals spill into the ground, and there’s a constant, thick smog called the Grey that causes the inhabitants to fall sick after years of exposure. The factories are controlled by the ruling elite of Zaun, the Chem barons. Technically, the government is the council of Pilltover, but the ruling merchant families do profit from cheap labor and the things Zaun produces, so they turn a blind eye to the plight of its people. This is just my rough summary of it. There’s more in the League of Legends Wikis, but that’s spoiler territory, so I wouldn’t go there before finishing the series.

I think they really nailed the world building in this show. I can feel the writers really use the characters as unique brushes to paint the world through their different motivations and misfortunes. So don't get overwhelmed by LoL's world.. it'll come to you naturally.

In case this is not fully clarified. So yes you got the explosion part right but forgot that during the explosion it released a lot of toxic gases buried under the ground. These gas fissures are mined and the gases sold. This is what primarily pushed piltover into the lucrative city is was as it’s roughly referenced that this was the export that brought in majority of its wealth. The social/economic divide happens due to businesses profiting lucratively while playing workers didly. Especially for those who work in these toxic gas mines, these people brave the risks simply because they have no alternatives to support themselves. It very much is like capitalism in the USA. We talk about how the 1% of the wealthy own the majority of the countries wealth. But to verify one other thing, they don’t pollute their water sources it’s the toxic contaminants that are found in the ground to blame for the water being bad. Besides the mild layer of toxic gases (used to be worse) that fills the lanes their heavy chemical and industrial plants do create a lot of smog which I mean does negatively impact the city but I’m just pointing out most of the initial toxicity in their environment comes from those toxins that are leaking from underground.

So many warnings in this episode, young characters like Jayce & Vi being warned... like that Chinese saying something like: The best way to be prepared the road/journey ahead, is to always ask those who are coming back [Vander & Heimerdinger]. 3:58 That lady is none other than Iranian-American Shohreh Aghdashloo. She's done acting and voice work for other animated shows and video games (The Expanse is probably what she's most noted for). I remember seeing her in a one-off episode of Grey's Anatomy, so that's what I recognize her from. I also love her voice, very distinctive and sultry compared to the saturation of higher-pitched voices that are much more common, especially in video games. 16:51 That IS the question for the whole series. Without going into spoilers, you're going to be presented with many instances and situations where the many ways characters answer that question are presented in shades of gray. While you might not get exact answers to why things are the way they are (very much like in real life), that is probably purposely done like in many forms of art. The point of art isn't to give you answers. The point is to create discussion and introspection. I think you'll be more satisfied letting this show be less of an answer key and more of like a survey class.

Vander needs to blame himself. That smoldering shame of failing those who followed him forged him from a fiery revolutionary to a true leader and diplomat. A good sword is forged by tempering. He was heated in battle and cooled by tears. He's a well forged man these days.

SPOILER: - - - - - - He's still wrong though. Sometimes change can only come through war and violence. The only reason the council even votes like they do at the end of Episode 9 is because they're scared shitless of Zaun having hextech. Vander and Silco are the two extremes of each ideals but they're both wrong. Silco wants to sacrifice too much and Vander not enough. Vander's way leads to stagnation and he was always going to be "overthrown" by people who craved actual change. Silco's way was self-destructive. Honestly the one who got the closest to actual change was Jinx. Instead of preserving the status quo forever like Vander or until they had enough power like Silco, she attacked the "right" target, stole the topsidesr' strength and used it against them and is the reason Silco was able to negotiate in the first place. She did more for his cause than years of drugging his own people for power did. Sadly her motivations weren't pure and she was too concerned about fulfilling Silco's dreams. Had Silco actually tried to find a way that didn't result in the destruction of Zaunite lives, he'd have had no infighting and both Jinx and Ekko as his allies, people who are the most suited to lead guerilla warfare, the most effective type of war against a superior opponent. He might actually have been able to do this.

Alana let me tell you, you are in for a ride. This show is so masterfully done with love and details and story. I only found out your channel from your Spy X Family and FMA:B but I'm so happy u picked this up bc this has solidified itself as one of the must-reacts from the past decade. Also if you have time for another series to pick-up, I recommend My Dress-Up Darling (slice of life/comedy/romance) Since you love Yor and Loid interactions so much, I figured you would really like this one. EDIT: Also, before you watch Episode 7, watch the Music Video for Enemy by Imagine Dragons

The tense music from when the po-po search the bar until powder almost fell was so good. Keeps me inching to the edge of my seat, even though we kinda know it's gonna be fine.. right?? Maybe it could go wro.. no.. well, what if she fell tho? It's not too far fe.. idk. This show is a vibe check for the viewers confidence, so unpredictable. Lets see if you can predict what's gonna happen next :)

Hm, how did the City get spit? Hehehe, that is actually a good question, well what do you think? It’s not like the whole Rich-half Poor-half City story trope haven’t been done before Arcane, heck i wouldn’t be surprised if something remotely similar were to be a thing in our real world, so yeah based on that, how do you think it happened?

just a side note: The voice actress who plays the sheriff was AWESOME in the Expanse. She plays UN Undersecretary Aversarala. It's probably the best sci-fi series in the past 10 or 20 years and something I'd highly recommend if you're interested in something that's basically like Battlestar Galactica + Game of Thrones.

I hate that you read the subtitles before listening to the voice of the characters, why do they do that? You don't need the subtitles, you already know english, you detract from the actors' work by doing that and the reaction you make is less effective for the viewers, I'm out of here
