(I looked like a weight lifter before. lol I don't do any of that.) Most people when they gain weight gain it in their stomachs, butts. I gain it in my upper chest and biceps and thighs. Sort of strange I guess. I was surprised I fit into 30 waist on the new ones. I've got a strange body. Tiny waist, small middle, big legs and huge upper body. Well, that's the long story of the new overalls! And I sprung for 2 new pairs at that! Gina, thanks for watching/commenting and I'm glad you like the new threads! lol Best, -Mark

Hi Tina Marie! Thank you! Just a hodge podge of different plants in there and when we see something we like, we add it to the bed. Hibiscus of one of the best perennials you can have as far as show, bloom time length. Annie.... Annie is very independent and shows herself very rarely. She's loose all day and makes her rounds around the property. Checking out the ground hog holes, taking a swim, going up to the neighbors and visiting with their dog, sleeping in the office, and god knows what else! In the busy times of year down at the retail greenhouses, she hangs and greets people and probably gets treats from people. Thanks for watching/commenting! Happy Gardening! -Mark

A tank top and overalls is a tough look to pull off but, yeah, it definitely works here. And a lovely flower show behind the "main attraction" too. "I just had some seeds in my pocket" in another lifetime, when I lived in a temperate climate, I was always collecting seed and putting them in my pocket. Sometimes I'd even remember to scatter them before the pants went in the wash. 🤣

@ILGuy20123 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tour of your garden. Regarding buddleia dying back to the ground, it depends on how cold it gets over winter. I'm in zone 5 in central IL. Some years, the buddleia dies back to the ground, but other years, new growth appeared on branches about 1 - 1 1/2' above the ground in the spring. There was even one year we had an unusually mild winter--I think no below zero temps--where there was hardly any die back of branches on the bush. So, I always wait till new growth starts appearing in Spring before cutting it back to avoid cutting off live branches. When I first started growing buddleia, I had 3 or 4 planted at different spots in my yard, but only one is still surviving today. It's on the south side of my house. I think it helps when the winter sun warms up the area, plus the house provides some protection as well. When it snows, I pile snow around it to provide insulation from the cold. I've had this bush for probably 16 or 17 years now, so I'm happy about that. I would guess for Zone 7 and higher, there wouldn't be much or any die back over winter. Maybe someone in that zone or higher can comment on it? Also, seeing you in overalls reminds me of a cherished gardening friend who died in 2004. He wore overalls everyday. He even had newer ones that he wore to church. LOL During the summer, he wore them without a shirt when he was around his home. Fortunately, he gave me some starts of a few different kinds of perennials. Seeing them reminds me of him. It's nice to have a living memorial to the friendship we had. Looking forward to watching more of your videos.

Wonderful gardens! Maybe you could talk about how you go about designing a garden like that. There are so many choices it can be overwhelming to know where to start.
@marksgardenlife59713 жыл бұрын
Hi ML! Thank you! With design, I think the best thing to do is look at many other gardens, public gardens, peoples houses and of course the internet is full of images. Also many areas have garden tours in the spring and summer and you can get lots of ideas from those as well. Don't forget books too. So many incredible books can be found on gardening on Amazon as used books too and of course you can read peoples ratings of books before making the purchase. Take lots of pictures, make notes of plant names and varieties and their individual growing habits, flower and leaf color, bloom times, etc. and it becomes much easier when you have all that information compiled right in front of you. By educating yourself, you will come up with exactly what you want and learn a lot in the process and you will gain confidence in your gardening abilities through knowledge. Professional designers are great, but some of the best gardens I have seen were created by the home owner who educated themself and did it all themselves. With professional designers, you are going to get what they like. Thanks for watching/commenting! Sorry for the long response! -Mark

I really appreciate you taking the time to answer questions. I love watching your videos. I usually do so with a pen and paper to take notes. I’ve ordered many of the vegetable varieties you have talked about. Seeds are already here and I’m super motivated about next year. I had commented on another video ( garden tour) I believe. I had a question for you about controlling slugs and vine borers. I put out beer for the slugs, but with all the rain it’s been hard to keep up. They are having a field day with my tomatoes. Vine borers have already done their damage for this year. I was hoping for tips to keep both away for next year.. I truly do appreciate your time. You and your gardens are very inspiring. Yep swamp Mallow, here on the shore they're blooming in the marsh now. Some 50 yrs ago my mom would dig those and plant them along our shoreline. These are white or a really nice pale pink. Beautiful gardens. I've had of Street MD, I'm near Blackwater Refuge.

I put several of the dwarf butterfly bushes in my yard two years ago. Same thing. They died back to the ground and came back strong this year with very little pruning. Those are the biggest lantanas I have ever seen!

Totally mind blown by all the beautiful plants, those hibiscus and lantanas are amazing. Everything is beautiful. With the sago pulp you mentioned, if it is what i think it is i have had it as a porridge and its delicious.

@@marksgardenlife5971 Next time you visit the Berkshires, be sure to include Naumkeag, in Stockbridge. Beautiful formal gardens designed in the early 20thy century and left to decay, they were brought back to full glory through a multi-million $ restoration. Magnificent. Also, the Berkshire Botanical Gardens are a great visit.

This is my first season working at a garden center and I'm now in a department that works with perennials...a lot. I'm trying to learn on my feet and I was really happy to find this video showing off some gorgeous plants and also great botanical knowledge. Thanks for the video, now I have to make it down to Maryland to check out your nursery!

I've just subscribed to your channel. I usually only watch Laura at "Garden Answer" for my gardening fix, but since she didn't post today, I found you instead. I am in zone 5/6 so I can grow most of the perennials that you describe. I'm impressed by those pots of lantana. I'll have to consider bringing mine inside during the winter. Greetings from Toronto, Canada.

Hi Michael! Welcome aboard the channel! Thank you! Laura has a wonderful channel and I'm surprised she didn't post today, but I'm glad you found me too! Lantana....We bring them in every October before the first frost and cut them back very hard. Some of those Lantana are 25 years old. The bees and butterflies just love them! Thanks for watching/commenting and of course thank you again for subscribing! Happy Gardening! -Mark

Mark, I just found your channel today and I'm glad that I did. I loved your tour and how you explained about the different perennials and flowers. Your explanations were plain and simple. Thank you for that. Also, I have three hibiscus. One is in a burgundy color which is my favorite. The other two are the white flower with the burgundy or pink in the middle. I love perennial gardening. You have inspired me to try planting other things around my house. Thanks again.

@@marksgardenlife5971 I came across your channel on KZbin. I understood by the title that you were a gardener. I guess it's the way something is titled. The thought of actually seeing someone else's flower garden entrigued me. I know that there are other gardeners, but yours looked the best. I hope this answers your question. Sometimes I don't explain myself very well.

I love seeing how distinct gardens are throughout the country due to varied climates. None of these plants except that tropical sago would last long in zone 10b Florida.

Great video, very informative. You mentioned about 15 minutes in that a particular plant was attractive to deer, and it would be good to know which, if any, of these perennials are deer resistant. I've dealt with disappointment a few times after planting some gorgeous perennials around the property at my farmhouse, only to discover a day or two later that they were food for wildlife. Thanks!
