I'm a Latina too and I agree with you. We live close to the city where Selena lived and two years ago we visited the Selena's museum. Her Dad and Sister were there and her Sister stoped to talk to my husband and pet our little Chihuahua dog. She was very kind and sweet. My daughter and I cry looking at Selena's clothing and belonings. Is still hard to know that her young beautiful life was cut short for no reason!

As a Queens girl myself, I loved Fran Drescher on The Nanny. I had the same coloring and I felt like she made dark hair, fair skin, and red lips pretty as I lived in a world obsessed with suntans and blonde hair. She really is a modern-day Lucille Ball. Her facial expressions and body language was very Lucy-like.

I also saw Fran Drescher and couldn't click fast enough! I discovered The Nanny years after it aired because much of my adult life, I didn't have a TV (I'm 65). My sister sent me the entire series on DVD and I wore them out, literally! I think back on many a scene (which I know by ❤) and laugh out loud- very helpful in pandemic depression moments! Anyhoo, this video really made me think about Lauren Bacall as my style icon influence. I am going to start looking up her movies to get more ideas for my style and see what develops. Thank you for thinking up this theme for fashion help! 💖

Her style was elegant and classic. Her leather classic handbags, silk scarfs, cashmere sweaters, silk blouses, and tailored shirts. Gorgeous and elegant. About YOUR style....you are so fine boned, your speaking voice is so soft, delicate, melodic and soprano, and your personality is so positive and your hair so airy and curly the first impression you make is ethereal. THe traditional definition of an ethereal type is tall, winsome, graceful, usually very light, almost white blonde , with light blue or grey eyes, nearly transparent white skin, a soft delicate floaty voice and personality reminding people of angels in the classic sense. Yet here you are, not tall, dark hair and eyes but with ALL the other characteristics of that type. I wonder how floaty fabrics would work on you, maybe in skirts, dresses and blouses...maybe in the burgundy and bottle green or navy to go with your coloring and that you love...you could marry these with your classic blazers. Something light and airy about each outfit might hint at your personality and echo your voice, hair, and graceful movement. It would give you a sparkle of individuality in your clothing to mirror your personality and demeanor, your delicacy. As my grandmother told me, play to your strengths in fashion and in life, that was great advice that propelled me forward. Abrazos!

I love your blog. We have very different styles, but I recognize your good taste and style. You must have the red dress made. I often get custom clothes. You can too. I’m sure there are seamstresses in your town or nearby city-you deserve your red dress. Let us know once you get your dress. Women should not fear bespoke clothing. My mother didn’t buy much, maybe 4 items a year, but they were high quality. She would buy a suit or a dress and go across the street from Nordstrom Best in Seattle where there was a shop that only did custom buttons and trim. I remember she had white grosgrain ribbon trim added to the collar, cuffs and pockets of a navy dress. Then she had the buttons replaced. I use Etsy for custom wear. The measurements include back of neck through crotch to shoulder blade, even upper, elbow circumference as well as underarm to waist and wrist. So many other measurements for different articles-pants, shorts, skirts, blouses all have separate measurements for the best fit. Three weeks later the item arrives. Only twice have I been unsatisfied and each shop accepted return for refund, even though it was made to order.

I agree. The pattern for the style is not too complex, so a good seamstress would be able to copy it exactly. Buy a good amount of red silk charmeuse...voila!

I really love the way you conceptualize style inspiration. I have so many style icons who I don't have similar body types to or even identical styles, but there's just something about the way they dress or some facet of the aesthetic that is so influential to me. Lindsay Wagner in The Paper Chase and Ali Macgraw in A Love Story are both major 70s preppy/collegiate inspiration for me. I draw my makeup inspiration from the young girl in The Lover (she's so glowy and fresh!), Carolyn Bessette Kennedy (when we're not wearing masks, my go to look is extremely natural skin, a touch of mascara, and a red lip), and also Pride and Prejudice--fun coincidences there! I have a very different body type to you--I'm very tall and quite curvy--so we naturally have somewhat different dress senses, despite the fact that I think one of the reasons I love your channel so much is that our overall aesthetics aren't dissimilar, but you've also become one of my style icons in the past few months! You have really helped me focus on figuring out what colors, silhouettes and styles make me feel amazing and help me express my personal style. And I've saved so much money not constantly trying to buy cheap clothes that never quite suit me and fall apart quickly!

Kim Novak in the film Bell, Book and Candle - early 1950’s I think. She played a witch but an incredibly cool, glamorous one. She wore a lot of black and red including a black turtleneck and a very stylish black cape which would look fabulous today. There are other films from that era with a similar vibe. It’s not rock and roll 1950’s. There are still elements of the glamorous side of the 1940’s which were more feminine and elegant. Grace Kelly in To Catch a Thief also. I think she epitomised that style.

Audrey, this was wonderful. The first time I saw you I realized you wore Preppy clothing. It was the first adult clothing I wore too because I lived in Boston then after growing up in Texas. Texas clothing just didnt work in Boston either for climate or fashion. Classic clothing was my entire wardrobe during my academic career. THen THAT didnt work in early retirement sailing the Caribbean for ten years. Now after fifteen years in Latin America living in coffee finca country, with an elegant Spanish colonial town nearby, I am back full circle to Texas clothing and British/American classic tweed blazers, sweaters mixed with slacks and loafers or jeans and my cowboy or riding boots most fall/winter days.I also like to pair my blazers with denim and silky midi skirts with boots. I like a Ralph Lauren style mixture of western wear, suede or leather blazers or jackets with skirts, jeans and trousers. Sometimes I wear a lace jabot, or a velvet scarf at the neck, even satin blouses mixed it....very RL country style which I love and fits my lifestyle now. I adore my Stetson all weather felt hat in moss green and my finely woven cream Panama hat from Ecuador. They are SO me!

And I will say, I have to whole-heartedly agree about Audrey Hepburn. Something about her and her style is just timeless. Edit: Is it strange that I think my father has had the biggest influence over my wardrobe? I've always loved his blazers, leather jackets, oxfords or wingtips, and his loafers. He always looks so effortlessly put together, and I think I try to emulate a lot of that in my own style, even down to owning many pairs of the same things I listed. Thought that it might be an interesting addition to the conversation, because I didn't realize it until I really started to think about it.

I’m only 5’2” but curvy/hourglass so I find it hard to find someone to look to. I do love some of the styles from the 40’s and 50’s as they seem to fit my body type a little better. Now that I’ve let my hair go gray I’m always looking for style ides that are classic yet still fun/ modern but not too young or too matronly. This was a fun video and definitely got me thinking.

With her olive toned skin and glowing cheeks to me that was everything! The biggest influence, far and away, was Julia Andrews, specifically her role as Maria in The Sound of Music but genuinely her whole career. She's always been the perfect balance of trendy and classic, dramatic and elegant. She's just an icon and forever will be. xx

Love love love this video. I realize now one of the reasons I enjoy you so much is because of your name. My favorite name! My mothers name. You and I share many style icons, and you made me really think about mine. Audrey Hepburn has to top my list as well because of her simple classic style. I am plus size so I would add Adele to my list as well because of her shape and coloring. I have an olive completion and VERY light hair. Platinum as it was blonde turned white. Grace Kelly is another of my style icons because of her classic style and coloring. Being a teen of the ‘70’s” I loved your Ali McGraw choice. I definitely wants Jennys’ wardrobe Thanks you for this great video.

Loved this video Audrey - I have never thought of who my style icons are and it is only in the past year that I have truly begun to define my sense of style - you have been my greatest influencer! - I have learned so much - thank you

Omgsh! I loved seeing your style icons next to you - there are such huge similarities! I was so struck by the similarity between you and Rosamund Pike's character in Pride and Prejudice - I always loved her look in that as well, and you look so similar!

I loved all your style icons. Who doesn't love Audrey Hepburn. Her style is enduring. I am probably your mother's age, because I saw Love Story when it first came out, when I was in high school. Everyone loved Ali McGraw's character's style. We were all dressing like that anyway. Everyone wore her knit hat, including myself. Since I was born in Cambridge and grew up in Watertown (the next town over) everyone of my friends went to see this movie because of all the places we all recognized. I love Rene Russo's style in The Thomas Crown affair. I actually bought that rust colored long jacket to wear over black trousers and turtle neck. I like a lot of Kate Middleton's style, except her print dresses. I also like Megan Markle's style. When I watch movies, I do pay attention to the way the characters dress, too.

You seemed so happy during this video, and your family and life sound absolutely wonderful and filled with intention. The first style icons I can remember (and I know this is not a specific person) were European-inspired when I was a little girl. My best friend was Italian and she and her mother and sister just had the most wonderful sense of style, I am still inspired by her (even though we are no longer friends). The classy and simple yet beautiful European style has always seemed so incredible, and I just wish I knew how to channel that earlier in my life (I can't even look at photos of myself from a few years ago because I am so upset and scared at how terrible I looked). The first tangible person who inspired my style was Freddy Cousin-Brown. While her style has changed a lot since 2015 and I no longer relate to it, I again love how European and classic it was. She introduced me to so many of the brands I love today, especially my ultimate favorite Ted Baker. She ignited my love for Victorian-era white blouses, but I also did ballet when I was younger and have always loved incorporating it into my personal style, especially as the art is such a big part of who I am today, even though I can no longer dance due to an injury. My latest influences have been very very classic and business-casual/professional-looking pieces. I absolutely adore black jeans/trousers with black flats or black Chelsea boots and a blouse or jumper. My color pallet is very neutral and timeless, and I have been really inspired to dress in a classier way. Audrey, you have really inspired me since I found your channel a few months ago to refine my style and be even more intentional about what I wear. It's been amazing how truly happy I am with my wardrobe now, which has made me even happier with myself in general. I am forever grateful for your top-quality videos, classy and delicate essence (I really see myself in you, which is even more special), and absolutely classy and timeless and intentional style. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you do. ♡
