I live in West Africa, where we all use tailors. You buy fabric in the market and take it to the tailor to describe what you want. You can buy trimming or other decorations or have embroidery done by the tailor. Some trends come along, but everyone puts their own unique touches on their clothes. Everyone has a personalized style. I especially like your last tip about dressing for your true life with a touch of fantasy.

My mom had a bunch of her clothing made in this way in the Philippines before she moved to the U.S. This one shirt she handed down to me, it is a tailored short sleeve cotton henley (sort of like a polo with a crew neck instead of a collar) with French news headlines printed on it, and the buttons that are on the shirt are made of real coconut wood. I love it so much, and I wish this kind of culture was normalized here.

I love your tip about going to the tailor. I’ve learnt to sew over the past couple of months as a way to pass the time while staying inside so much, and it’s been such a game changer. I’ve shortened all my trousers to fit me perfectly and it’s almost as if I got new ones, I can style them so differently now since I don’t have to roll them up. I highly recommend giving sewing a go if you have access to a sewing machine, it’s a lot of fun and it’s another way to customise your clothes (or even make your own!)

How did you learn sewing?🌹
@MyVeryOwnWonderland4 жыл бұрын
@@monaaltaweel9439 I‘m completely self-taught, I simply dusted off my mum‘s old sewing machine and had a go at it. There’s a lot of great content on KZbin from really basic tutorials to full-on sew-alongs. It can be frustrating sometimes because it is not an easy craft, but it is so rewarding as well. I recently made a dress using a sewing pattern and it’s my favourite thing in my wardrobe at the moment!
@sonyaj664 жыл бұрын
Same here! I have sewn on and off since I first learned when I was young, and have been doing simple modifications (e.g. - taking in bootcut jeans along the leg seams to turn them into skinny jeans) for years, about a year ago, I decided to try altering the waist of jeans. I've always had the problem of jeans that fit well in the legs being gaping and huge in the waist :-(. So, after watching some YT tutorials on how to do this, it has been a complete game-changer for me! I can now buy jeans at the thrift store for a few dollars - some of which are nice name brands - and tailor them so they fit perfectly for my waist. I've also altered shirts to be more fitted, a blazer, some skirts, and a vintage wool coat that I have been carting around for probably 20 years and never wore. There are so many awesome sewing DYI channels here on YT - one of my favorites is Blueprint DYI. She inspired me to take a pair of striped, cropped pants and turn them into a pair of Bermuda length shorts with pleats.
@vals744 жыл бұрын
Sewing is not my thing. My mom used to sew, but I can remember avoiding sewing in home economics in school and opting for cooking instead. Anyway, I used to shop wholesale in NYC’s garment center. This was a great advantage, however, most of the clothing had to be tailored. Now, I find myself living in a rural town in Virginia where not many appreciate fine clothing, art, or dining. A John Deer is a cherished asset, and a manicured lawn is all that is recognized here. As a matter of fact there is nothing refined about Virginia and Virginians except nature. So good luck in finding a tailor or hairdresser here. I have recently lost a lot of weight and am in dire need of a tailor. I tried asking a neighbor if she knew of anyone that can sew, but no go! I can sew a hem, so for now safety pins have become very useful. Please, do not judge a person by their lawn. Some simply cannot afford the equipment or have the ability to afford to pay for a decent landscaper. Really, depends where you place your priorities. I choose to look well kept rather that the ground I walk upon.

A great suggestion! I use tailoring when I find an item that Ilove but i seem to be between sizes. So for example, I once bought a dress from H&M, a gray wool sheath, fully lined, super on sale. For the dress to fit me around the tummy, I needed a size that was too big a the bust and shoulders. So I bought the big size and had a tailor take it in at the shoulders - it just needed a pinch. It made all the difference, that dress looked like it was designer. I wore it for years until the fabric just wasn’t holding up anymore and it lost its shape.

The last point is amazing, Audrey. I'm in a deep deep love with long, elegant, princess-y, kinda retro dresses. The problems are: - Most of them have long sleeves and i live in a hot-all-year-round country -> impractical. - I work in a ad agency and production house, most of the time i work 8-5 in the office where people either wear casual or formal office style -> long elegant dresses are kinda over; other times i'm on set for filming TVC or running around in some kinds of factory, workshop, etc for filming corp videos -> even dresses are impractial - I'm a fresher in this industry, my income isn't high, while dresses that fit my fancy self are so not in my budget - I'm 1m58 and 54kg, quite short and chubby, i'll be drowning in long dresses with many patterns or details. I slowly learned to buy vintage or consignment, though it took a long time to find 1 dress that fit me, my style, my work place and my true self. I choose shorter dresses, a bit longer my knee so i look taller and can move easier while working. Instead of long sleeves, i choose mid and short sleeves, or maybe long sleeves but thinner materials, like chiffon. Instead of dresses with many beautiful details, i choose ones with fewer but more elegant details on the neck lines to show my collarbone, etc. So far, for almost a years, i only find 4 dresses that fit all i need. 2 of them are over my budget, let me be honest, but i wear them to death. They are easy to wash since they don't have many details and weren't make of fancy materials. I can wear them to parties, to weddings, to work, to weekend hangouts, to travels. The most important thing is they can pamper my fancy self without crashing my true self

I always fall in love with how you guide us to style ourselves, Audrey.
@designorganize26084 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right. STYLE is the touches that we add or tweak to our daily outfits that make it our own. Style is not just 'winter' or 'summer' or a color palette, but the particular twist that shows who we are. I would love to see you delve into this a little more as so many of us just mimic photos, and forget that everyone else is doing that also. We need to define our style and inject it daily into our clothing choices so that we are uniquely ourselves. I would love to see a series of photos that show the same cloting choices on a lot of women, but then pick out what it is that they have added that make it represent their 'style'. Thanks.... a great topic and a true definition of 'style'.

Tailoring is amazing! I bought a teal (favorite color) suede skirt for $1 secondhand, bought matching corduroy, and had a tailor add corduroy stripes on both sides because the skirt was too small. Also, if you have a sweater that gets holes, a reweaver can fix that in a way that looks seamless! It's cheaper to hire a reweaver than it is to buy a new sweater, especially if cashmere or alpaca.

Tailoring is priceless! 💗 This is one of the reasons why I’m so glad and grateful that I know how to sew! I also just really love sewing. 💗 I have a really hard time with pants, even when I was a much skinnier teen- I have always had to alter my pants. I have a *really* big butt, hips for days, and thick thighs, all paired with a small waist/short torso. I do really like that combination on my body, but finding pants that can properly accommodate my lower half and my waist... mission impossible. lol One of the reasons I love shopping second hand- I can get a decent pair of jeans or trousers for $10, and then use my sewing skills to alter them. I’m always experimenting with new techniques to get the best fit, and if I’m working on a pair of second hand pants that I paid very little for, it’s not quite as frustrating I make a mistake.
