I read "Voyages of the Adventure and Beagle" (vols 1-3, King, Fitzroy, and Darwin, 1839)again recently, it sounded amazing. If you want to read an authentic account, mostly involving the survey of the Straits of Magellan, I highly recommend reading the set. Photographic scans are available for free from the "The Complete Work of Charles Darwin Online" collection run by his descendants (because of a dishonest demographic that was putting altered stuff online to make it look like he said things that he never did say. All of the scans are original publications, high resolution, mostly from the Cambridge collection. Because of that dishonest religious demographic, only obtain Darwin from this source). The voyages began almost 200 years ago, but the accounts are a very good read.

Right. Go back a little further,and you have the Vikings crossing the North Sea in clinker-built, shallow draft vessels that flexed and twisted with every wave, and with gunwales that were feet above water. Yeah, I'm a wuss. I like modern boats with all the amenities... Radar, radio, galley and a head! These gents have just as much salt in their blood as any mariner of the past. ✌🏻🐱
@kaylaandjimbryant82583 жыл бұрын
@@PhoenixLyon well, a modern shoal draft mono or fixed keel cat usually run four to five and a half feet and do just fine. Granted the length to beam ratio is a bit different than a longship... What I find amazing as that the vikings did crossings on those things with such limited amounts of fresh water. Maybe we are all spoiled brats now, but I want a good water maker.

If we see if we head into it. They can be quite common in bad weather so we have to keep a good lookout and head into the really big rogue waves while getting hit side on by the normal waves that are just big. I’ve been out in my little 23 ft ski boat before and we’d come up waves on river or the gulf where it seemed to be best to hit them at a slight angle vs straight on. I take it, that is wrong?? What is the best way to take on waves??
@Bigwavemaster1Ай бұрын
I’m my experience it is always best to take the biggest waves head on at the slowest speed that maintains steerage. If you take them at an angle, the wave can push your bow and cause your vessel to go beam-on. That always upsets the cook.

I have to wonder what kind of glass that is, to withstand all that pressure in the last clip.
@Bigwavemaster18 жыл бұрын
It's amazing isn't it James? A year after I filmed this we smashed two bridge windows in the space of a few days. It was not the windows that failed but the studs in the window frames. In the course of a storm we would be hit by these size waves several times a day for two-three weeks and, as I'm sure you know, a cubic meter of water ways 1 tonne. That's s hell of s lot of weight being thrown at those windows. However, the tiniest of taps with a hammer and they shatter like, well........glass I suppose?
@gojewla8 жыл бұрын
I am surprised these are not made of a material like plexiglass?
@Bigwavemaster18 жыл бұрын
That's a good point. Plexiglass marks too easily and would make it increasingly difficult to see out of.
@gojewla8 жыл бұрын
Bigwavemaster1 That's probably true. Still, I think they must use some very high quality plexiglass when making "bulletproof glass". I am at least willing to bet that they don't use regular glass for windows such as these. I don't think normal glass could handle the high winds, in addition to the water spray from large waves. By the way, Thanks for posting this awesome video!
@Bigwavemaster18 жыл бұрын
Our windows are certainly not normal glass. They are quarter inch toughened safety glass. The same as you would get in a car only much thicker. Thanks of the comments. I make a film every trip showing the crew in their daily lives. I'm at sea now and shall be uploading the next in a couple of weeks. Hope you've subscribed? ;)

Do you have to steer directly into a wave? If you go broadside will it turn the vessel over?
@Bigwavemaster14 жыл бұрын
We try and steer directly into the main direction of the largest waves but they tend to come from every direction at once. Since we are looking after a couple of oil platforms, we try to stay within 10 miles of them. This involves turning the ship every few hours and going broadside on to the waves. Careful timing is required. A single wave would not turn us over but two together could.

Awesome, I think I asked before but what was your speed over the ground in that lot? About 1 knot maybe?

Something like that. We go as slow as possible. We are trying to stay in the same place so the slower we go the slower we hit the waves and the fewer times we have to turn the boat around. Turning is the most dangerous time.
