from my rare appearances in the KZbin videos.
Today he came to visit and these are what he gave me.

As I am a little like you with a small engineering workshop I have had a few people give me Mamod steam engine in various states of decay. I like restoring them as they are so simple and yet work so well (as you have shown). They are pretty bomb proof. I was once given a Wilesco traction engine that was extremely beaten up. Using a combination of Mamod traction engine wheels and some sheet metal I made it look quite like a Case traction engine. These Wilesco engines have a lot more power than the Mamods and run nicely.

I have a manually operated drill press like that, but much smaller! It comes in very handy because I don't have an electric one. It's only 18" high and has a 1/2" chuck. Fantastic little things.

Another really good cleaning solution is Simple Green concentrate. I have used it at about 1/4 strength (from concentrate) in my ultrasonic cleaner when cleaning old brass clock parts. I'm in the USA, not sure if one can get it in the UK.

In college, Automotive machining course, the instructor said, "Ask me before you put ANYTHING in the hot dip cleaning tank." A student ignored his advice. Put an aluminum engine head in the tank and left it overnight. The next day the student raised the parts rack. Ran to the instructor and claimed that someone had stolen his cylinder head. The instructor looked in the tank parts tray. There were 8 brass valve guides laying on the rack. The instructor explained that the students head was still in the tank, it is now a part of the sludge material that is sitting in the bottom of the tank. Lesson Learned.

you should see if there's any way to convert the hand crank drill to steam power it could be a fun project to try

Thats quite impressive cleaning. Could you knock up a lid to help keep the heat in?

That's quite the transformation! I've found just natural dish soap and hot water seems to work the best for aluminium without causing pitting or damage like acidic or basic cleaners would. I made this mistake once with a model airplane engine crankcase, runs fine but looks horrible, haha.

that old Mamod traction engine looks like it could be repaired with a new boiler its clearly been stored in a damp place

Mentioning the hundreds of those tractors around the world, I actually have one here in Canada! It's missing the canopy and ash pan sadly, but other than a bit of surface rust it's in okay shape and sits on my dresser. It has a different logo on the smoke box face, it proudly proclaims it's from England under the name. I'd love to run it live steam some day, but I'm afraid the safety valve needs a rebuild or replacement, and I haven't had the time.

Do you watch find it fix it flog it or shed and buried. In one of them they find a steam engine and take it! (It's probably 3 or 4 inch gauge). Got to love the old mamod!

Yes I do. A lot of the facts in the shows are a bit wrong, but I find both programmes quite entertaining.

The gas coming off the aluminum is quite likely hydrogen so be careful.

Are you planning on selling or getting rid of the Te1a, since you already have a Te1/Te1a hybrid? Perhaps a stupid question, but if you were I might be interested. Keep up the awesome content my friend, all the best

@@keithappleton Mamod engines are in some ways better than the ones made by Wilesco as they don't have as meany parts made out of plastic. the Mamod stationary engine looked like the boiler needed some metal polish
