Work ethic is so important no matter the job! My mother...God bless..worked up until 2 weeks before passing away from heart failure. She was 87. She was president of the family lawn mower repair business and proudly worked with her 2 sons (my brothers). The customers loved her and knew her as UM--Upper Management.

John you are absolutely correct. I'm 63 yrs old and retired now, started working at 12. As a retired cashier and bookkeeper I retired because the family I worked for went through several generations. The third generation had no respect for their older employees. Their grandfather was a gem and taught and respected us all as we him. We were taught by our parents that nothing is free and working makes you respect and appreciate what you have and how you got it. I hope with this employment situation employers would think about what you said. There are many folks out there willing to work if given the chance.

I work for a a company who had a CEO many years ago who treated everyone with the same respect. Everyone loved him. The company has gone downhill so much and it is one everyone has heard of. I have lost much respect for the company as a whole. It is disheartening. My pride won’t allow me to take money stolen from others who work and given to people to willingly not work.

My Dad was born a baby boomer. Though I was born in 88, I still consider myself part of Gen X. Dad is a Disabled Veteran, but he still makes himself do unpaid work. Some of that was imparted in me. I'm a truck driver right now. In February 2020, I was let go from two trucking jobs. I could've gone on that unemployment, but I don't want to be paid for doing nothing. My Bible says that if you don't earn your bread, you shouldn't be able to eat your bread. And I agree with my Bible. I had 5 jobs last year, for that reason. Right now I'm kindof getting overworked and underpaid. But I'm seeing too many "Now Hiring" signs to keep doing the same thing I'm doing. Much respect to you, John, for how you keep going.

There is this 95 yr. old black man who goes to work every Monday - Saturday working on lawnmowers. He never complains. He has a smile on his face and says how blessed he is he can get around and work. He puts in a full eight-hour day. You will see them at Wal-Mart and other places working to supplement their income because Social Security is not enough to live on. The Dollar Tree in New Roads, LA stays closed because most of their employees didn't want to work. It's ridiculous. I was talking to one cashier who was going to college, takes care of her grandfather, brings him lunch every day, and takes care of him when she gets home. I had to admire this young black lady. She doesn't want any hand-outs. She's working herself through college. She will be an excellent asset to a company when she finishes her degree and gets into the corporate world. Yes, she worked at The Dollar Tree. She needed that job. I wish her all the best in the world along with Mr. Dickson, the 95 yr. old who gets up every single day and goes to work. God Bless Them. Thanks for sharing.

We all have a story about wanting to work. I work retail. After being a stay at home mom I had to go to work to help support my kids. I honestly struggled at first because I was so afraid of failure but dreamed of success. I have been with the same company now for 16 years in September. I have so much more confidence now and I'm less intimidated since I have the responsibility of a supervisor. I'm 51 and I love to keep busy but still struggle to make ends meet. There are stories of success waiting to happen and while I'm not well off, I'm happy. Yes there are people who want to work they just need an opportunity. I'm glad you addressed this John.

under 50, have worked the entire time. Something that wasnt addressed is how the work force currently feels, having to work the entire time in all of this. The number of us that were given nothing extra or looked after while we kept things going is offensive. We are literally given the absolute minimum while the maximum output is expected from us. Million dollar businesses are asking for favors instead of paying for them. The fact that a business wont pay a person more for their work than a person can make sitting and doing nothing, is ludicrous. And we are supposed to want to get up and help a business stay afloat for those wonderful underpayed perks. Businesses are currently no different than Hollywood, which believes people that watch the movies are the problem, the fact that they dont realize they are offering trash and that is actually why nobody wants it, is the actual truth. And it says way more of them than it does of society. have a great day Mr Schneider, it was nice to see you.

I began working at 14 retired at 66. Here 2 companies are desperate to hire. Ppl don’t apply OR they fire ppl who won’t come in to work. One, tractor assembly, other hauling/warehouse, both good pay, benefits, 401k. The tractor co is in such bad shape they may shut down & SEND WORK TO JAPAN. So when ppl here are finally ready & desperate to work, they may not find it. I don’t want to hear any crying about foreigners doing our jobs. I cleaned the office after hrs for xtra pay, my accounting job, & we had the cleanest toilets in the town. Also we had no one to clean & it was shameful. I know several younger folks taught work ethics. Wonderful young folks. One nephew is a Marine, for “free” college. I have 2 nephews 26 & 29 who have NEVER worked, no education after high school, only live for computer games. Fully agree, John, our older folks appreciate the pay/benefits & some flexible hours available. And, they can teach & guide others. Nothing like a sense of pride in your work.

Some rethinking needs to be addresses. There is a small restaurant in a small town in my home state and all the servers and cooks are over 70. Hi John 👋 very true I've always believed what you said. Did you know that the government considers people who are 40 to be senior citizens because that's when age discrimination begins in the work place ? When we turn 40 or right before we turn 40 we get an insurance information card or something in the mail that says "for senior citizens age 40 to 85" I suppose that taxes will go up now so the government can get back all the "free" money they're giving out and most likely will continue giving out 🤷‍♀️ Thank You John 🙋‍♀️

My parents were brought up during the Depression years, but they never complained or said they were “poor”, they said they just didn’t have a lot of money. So, they did what my grandparents taught them to do........WORK! They raised 5 of us with very little at times, but we never complained either. And that’s what my wife and I have instilled in our daughters, and we’re seeing the results of their hard work also. LAZY IS NOT A WORK ETHIC, IT’S AN EXCUSE BY THOSE WHO DON’T WANT TO WORK.......PERIOD.....

Houston, TX: I signed up for Amazon flex, Instacart, Shoot, DoorDash. They all put me on a wait list, going on three weeks, now. Lots of people waiting for work.

Thanks for the Sunday inspiration John! Little did I know when I was emulating you as a 16/17 year old back in Florida, I would still be getting inspiration from you in my 50’s. Thank you for what you do.

This happened last year to my girlfriend. She lost her job due to covid and she was making more sitting at home than working. 3 months rolled around and an ex-coworker asked if she wanted a job and she took it. She is the hardest working person I have ever seen. She can not stand still. And guess what she is making more money than her previous job with better retirement package and bonuses. She absolutely deserves that that job and now she'll be inline for promotions for 4th in command of the company due to her work ethic.

John, I agree, the only people wanting to work are 50-70 year olds...they want to work, they are very reliable and they have "integrity" . ..a quality that the USA is rapidly losing these days.

As a 48 year old, I have seen over and over again places that were once good places to work, where the employer treats the employees like people and vise versa change to where employers care more about the bottom line than the assets they have with the people they employ that make that bottom line possible. I hear places say well we are changing to be like everyone else. Maybe not being like everyone else is the thing that sets you apart in a good way and allows you to get the best of the best to work for you and they in turn go above and beyond to take care of your customers or clients.

I was laid off because of COVID and a need to cut costs. I am 61 and was paid more and it they hired 3 interns to do my job. One was unable to produce and was let go now my old coworkers are calling me to help them out. I’m trying to get a job where over 400 applications are being submitted for jobs and if I get an interview my age puts me at a disadvantage and the ageism is real. Still looking and it’s tough and demeaning. Thank you for speaking up for us hard working people.

My second comment my husband was made to retire early because of his age. He applied for unemployment. You had to do it online, a nightmare, it's been several months and has yet to receive a check, he kept looking and did find a job thank God. He's 64.

I’m a very experienced karaoke DJ in Phoenix, Arizona. I’ve been extremely underemployed since the first covid shutdowns. I just turned 51. I’m currently only working one night a week and need more. And I’m not getting any kind of assistance.

I always looked at mooching off Our Government as mooching Liberty that many sacrificed and died for. Although we were upper middle class my parents always made me work for what i wanted. These days i feel bummy if i dont do something for a day or two.

i am 43, i started working when i was 13. I lost my job due to Covid, i have been trying for over a year now to get a new job but all they (the companies) want is 18-20 year olds! Because they are cheaper! Couple of weeks ago i heard this kid (maybe 20 or 22 years old) whining he had to work 10 hour days, 4 days a week and that it was to much for any human to work all those hours in one week! Give me 70-75 hours a week and i’m happy!! And i have tried to get a job anywhere but i’m to old at 43. I tried gas stations, shoe stores, bakery, forklift driver, warehouses, mailman and anything in between and nothing... it’s frustrating to know that a kid that doesn’t want to work has priority over someone who does want to work!
