Ok... I’m a 40 year old black man from Alabama... this was my favorite show growing up as a kid. My dad and brothers watched it all the time. We loved fast cars... and seeing Bo and Luke and everyone on there drive them like crazy 😜 . The show was fun, exciting.... my family never cared about the flag on the car. I never thought the show was racist!!! The show was family oriented and exciting... Thanks for all the memories, and all the fun episodes. PLEASE KEEP THE SHOW available to watch

I was raised in the south. My daddy was raised up north, and we traveled all over the country with his construction jobs. And we always had a rebel flag on our license plate. No one ever had a problem with it . We never saw it as racist. It was just a symbolism of living in the south. I always love dukes of hazards . I hope that you won’t have to cave to a few. Keep up the fight to keep the rebel flag on the general lee. And I really hope the show is still able to stay on.

The General Lee is literally named after Robert E. Lee. He wasn’t a monster. at least not entirely. recently i’ve been reading a lot about history and i’m learning a lot. stuff no school bothered to speak of. one of the most surprising things to of learned is he married George Washington’s Step-Great-granddaughter.

Brian Homka It’s kinda hard to know what racism is when you’ve never experienced racism being done to you. Have you ever been followed around a store or had cops called on you for “looking suspicious”? Have you ever had anyone tell you to speak English because this is America? Have you ever been told to go back to your country? If not, then you’ll never understand.

Mr. Schneider, I’m a Caribbean American male that migrated to this country (NYC) from England with my family in the late 70’s. I watched the Dukes of Hazard religiously when it was on the air... Friday evening @8p on CBS. Every one of my friends, Black and Latino watched to show as well! I DO NOT, in any way or form feel that the Dukes of Hazard should be/have been removed because of the General Lee. In this show, there was always some sort of lesson to be learned. Morals played a big part of those lessons, good vs. bad, right vs. wrong. It’s unfortunate in this day and age we live in, with the current events. But the show and the General Lee was loved by all. At the end of the day, the flag is just that, a flag! And I never ever saw or felt that there were any racial undertones associated with the show at all. IMHO. Respect you much!

The Dukes was my fave show as a kid. And though I'm a white man from South Louisiana, I've had close Black friends all my life. I've always seen the rebel flag as representing southern heritage with a bit of prideful, won't take no BS mentality. All of which fit the Duke family perfectly. The DOH never depicted an ounce of racism. Just the opposite... the show had more morals & values than most Nickelodeon shows nowadays, let alone modern Primetime garbage. Cheers John! Love the channel btw✌

I'm a black female and watched Dukes of Hazard every week with my parents and siblings. Given my age at the time, 11 or 12, I had little exposure to racism or racist symbolism, so to me it was just a really fast car with an X and some stars painted on it. As an adult, I now understand and agree that the confederate symbol has strong ties to human oppression, however I don't believe that particular ideology was ever part of the show, otherwise my parents never would have allowed me to watch it. I think targeting old television shows and movies is a waste of time and distracts from the real problems with race that this country has.

I think they should get rid of the General Lee .It was cool but with new knowledge comes new responsibility. Let's help out the Black people because it's a painful reminder. One thing at a time and maybe when another line must be drawn then they will say it's enough. I think then they will feel differently. Slavery was a huge mistake and our Country is paying for it.

Love hearing about the Dukes, because I watched it as a kid. I'm 44 & I still love the show! NEVER REMOVE the show! We need more shows like it. I never grew up thinking race & I had friends of ever shade. Color was never a thing. Don't get why it is now. We were more interested in if you were a good person or not. The Southern Cross is different than the Confederate flag & people need to be better educated on history. I remember learning of a southern black man who dressed in a Confederate Uniform & taught the meaning of the different flags in the South during the war & their meanings. He loved his Southern flags. His ancestry was from slavery, but he loved America, was proud to be American & Southern. No victimhood there. I learned a lot from that man. History needs to be taught from real people, not academics.

@joye ottwell I'm a fair guy, so I will grant you that in retrospect, I could perhaps, have omitted the expression "Exhibit A". (I sometimes hear people around me use that expression, despite there being no courtroom, and it is usually in jest.) If I came across as offensive, I apologize. This was not at all my goal. Re: the link, you don't have to open it. I will summarize. Two jerks were giving Daisy attitude (and one of them grabbed her!), Cooter stood up for her, and the three got into a fight. I think Cooter's action is an example of his respect for women. I do not know where your question about salacious behaviors is coming from, but that vile crap is completely foreign to me. Also, I find it self-evident that being accused of salacious behaviors is not at all a prerequisite for seeking to keep one's eyes and mind pure. Innocent people can train themselves to do so as children and remain innocent in that regard for the rest of their lives. And it will teach people (men in particular) to have a deeper respect for women than they would otherwise.
@danielstolin8944
@danielstolin8944 4 жыл бұрын
@joye ottwell That's true, the Dukes did indeed care about each other. And not only about each other, but also about just about everyone in distress. They even had Boss Hogg stay at their farm in Witness for the Persecution! And whoever still wants to cry racism should watch Cooter's Confession, where the Duke family (and Cooter) helped an African American (Hal Williams).

Ok since you asked. I’m from NJ, so I don’t assume to know the hearts of Southerners, but I can tell you what I’ve always believed. Every author of the United States Declaration of Independence owned slaves!!! Does that mean the American flag is a symbol of slavery? All of the Founding Fathers owned slaves. Slavery was abolished in 1865. 155 yrs ago. Did the police officer that killed the gentleman in Minnesota have a flag of the Confederacy on his uniform or an American flag? The American flag is made up of “stars and bars”. The states secession was not about slavery. It was about the feeling of unfair governing. History has apparently been rewritten by groups of people to benefit their on desires of protest and mayhem. Slavery was a sin. God created everyone in His own image. ALL lives matter in God’s eyes. Also as far as television shows and racism go, did you know that The Andy Griffith Show NEVER had any African Americans on it? The spin off Mayberry RFD did, but the original did not. Why hasn’t anyone commented on that. However the Dukes had African Americans AND Asian Americans in it. Hmmmmm..... Please keep fighting for The Dukes of Hazzard.

I'm from Georgia and all that flag ever meant to me was a reminder of home. I don't know anyone that ever watched The Dukes because they thought Bo, Luke, Uncle Jesse, or anyone else hated anyone. It was about a family that loved one another and tried to treat anyone who would let them, with respect & love. I understand that some people may see the confederate flag as a symbol of hatred, but the 70s was a different time. The flag was not a symbol of hatred to most. No one I know of ever even gave that a second thought. Rebel pride was not white pride. It just meant that we were proud to be Southern. There's an old saying that sums it up best. The South is a place the other three letters on the weathervane are just directions. I've been to a lot of places, but in my humble opinion they all pale in comparison to the south. That's all "Rebel Pride" means to me. Thanks for your videos John. You are a source of inspiration for me, just like Bo Duke was to a kid who desperately needed a positive role model. Thanks for that too.

As a black man who grew up watching the Dukes of Hazard, it never crossed my mind that any of your characters were racist. I loved your adventures, getting chased by the law and getting away.. Sliding across the hood of the General Lee, bow and arrow skills, obviously Daisy Duke.. And more importantly how the car jumped so high off a bush or the random perfect dirt ramps... The General Lee was up there with the Batmobile, Knight Rider, Street Hawk, Air Wolf, the A Team van...

We have, i think, 4 or 5 seasons of the Dukes on DVD and I can tell you, we never worried about what our kids or now our grand kids were gonna see and hear when we put Dukes on. There was no nudity, no cursing, no racism or anything like that. Thats what made the show so great. Lord, how I wish they would make more shows like that now. The Dukes of Hazzard was one of my absolute favorite shows growing up in the 80s. As a white guy I guess it is easy for me to say that there was nothing racist about it. Yet I don’t recall seeing any member of the Duke family, not a Uncle Jesse, not Daisy, not Luke or you “Bo” doing or saying anything that was demeaning, disrespectful or denigrating to any race or ethnicity in any way whatsoever. I recall the show pretty well. It seems to me the writers made sure that hateful and disrespectful attitudes were done by the bad guys-namely Boss Hog. And making a point to show that being a jerk or a bully wasn’t cool. Obviously your show had a very positive impact on me. I realize that nowadays, it is not for some people to decide wether or not racism exists or has existed somewhere. Ok, well then I’ll just say I didn’t see anything like that on the show and see no reason why it should not be shown on tv in the future. That said, there are some people these days who won’t hear any reason orrationality regarding the Rebel Flag. Even though I always saw it as Bo and Luke being rebels. Modern day Robin Hood as it were. EDIT: Also, I really liked Eddie Macon’s Run.

In the 1960s a lot of images, symbols, flags and ideas were blindly re-appropriated into graphic and pop art images. Many icons were re-appropriated to represent new ideas...like the "Rebel" flag. It became a symbol of rebellion, anti-conformity, and anti-culture at the time. It was also a brightly coloured cool graphic that looked good on things. I remember it as a common tee shirt graphic in the 70s and it was often custom painted on bikes and cars. Its place in racist history was largely ignored and forgotten...as it should be...because flags don't be racist, people be racist. The use of the flag as a graphic on a custom car is nothing more than that...don't try to twist it into a weapon, when it isn't. Some things need to be taken on face value...like the TV show Dukes of Hazzard and the General Lee and the Confederate flag. My comment on "cancel" culture is "we shouldn't try to erase history...we should remember it and learn from it."

The only question is who you're trying to deceive more with that excuse, those you're telling it to, or yourselves. As far as racism in the north ...sure, that deserves a proper accounting too. I grew up watching the “Dukes of Hazzard,” loved the show, then and now. There is nothing at all racist about the show or The General Lee. To me, the Stars and Bars is about Southern Pride, not a symbol of white supremacy or racism. Anything can become a symbol of hate, it’s all in what you make of it.

First, the Confederate Battle Flag is a symbol of racism. It was during the U.S. Civil War, and it has been since. It is as much a symbol of racism and the swastika is a symbol of hate for Jews. The KKK didn't display the Confederate Battle Flag to show "Southern pride" or being a "rebel" as they strung up blacks in the South. Second, naming a car after the general who was the leader of the Confederate States of America is another sign of racism. The Confederate States left the Union to preserve slavery. Robert E. Lee led that insurrection. Third, the Confederate Battle Flag is not the "Stars and Bars". The "Stars and Bars" is the actual Confederate States of America flag with a field of stars in a circle and three "bars" rather than stripes.

They are not truly disgusting, I understand where cancel culture people are coming from, rightfully so, but what they often can be are disappointing. We all have to fight toward equal justice and fairness, but a war cannot be won blind. In other words, if it is unreflective, or not intellectually honest, than that unfortunately can end up seeming to some as a little irrational, as bigotry is. Let's all end up on the High road. I am a Die hard Fan of Dukes, yet I was only 11 and 12 years old; I was ignorant then to what that flag meant, because I lived in New England, and the show was cool. The adults around me were mostly innocently ignorant in their bliss. People who are only alive today won't understand this, but life was SO simple then. Now I know what I didn't know then, but that show had nothing to do with bigotry. It's like The Wicked Witch of the West in the Wizard of Oz looking and being just super Cool, wild looking visuals, having nothing to do with the Salem Witch Trials; There should be no censorship of ART, because that's what this is also as entertainment. When I was a very young, small boy the other boys would play a game Cowboys and Indians, and being an "Indian" to me was great, I wanted their Dress, and to look like that, as well as to look like a cowboy if that was how I was called upon. Now I know not to refer to Native Americans inaccurately as having come from India. Yet we were innocently misled.

And while the group is singing happy birthday to the child celebrating, you are telling your mom "why aren't they singing happy birthday to me?". I hope you will do some research. Black Lives Matter doesn't mean the Blue or White lives don't matter. I am a black woman. I researched the true history of the Confederate flag and I don't see a problem with it. It is a symbol of southern heritage. There are evil people who use it for their own means but the flag should not be punished for that.The"Dukes of Hazzard " was my favorite show! When I watched it I didn't feel offended by the Confederate flag on hood of General Lee.🙂

Amen! Let me know how you recognize people from other parts of the country? You know when you meet a Southerner, and respect given is always our Bible Belt character presentation. How do you recognize someone from New York?

I told my sister that exact same thing when she called police to have her neighbor remove the flag from his front porch.... The police informed her she should erect a privacy fence if it offended her....

Good evening Mr Schneider. My name's Thomas, I live over in the UK in Scotland, in the country side just outside as town called Stirling. You may have heard of the battle of Bannockburn, that's where I live. I know it's a while since you made this video/asked folks opinions.. hopefully your still reading the replies. This is the first time I've ever written anything on the internet, at 41 years old(young, 41). The situation regarding the rebel flag and the show being off the air, toys stopped being produced etc etc.. brought tear to my eye. And I'd love to let you know why... Being born in1980, I missed the first couple of seasons but my earliest memories are tuning into the dukes with my older brother on a fuzzy TV with push buttons to change between the three channels available. We have Christmas pictures of us grasping our replica toy general Lees. My big brother dressed in his plastic boss Hogg hat that came with his CB hat and revolver set. We even had plastic mud jump ramp, not that my folks were wealthy. My dad eventually bought a small Datsun two door in orange and would let us climb in the windows. We had wooden framed beds we used to push together and constructed a general Lee with a baby rattle that doubled as a shifter, which my brother has kept to this day. Hard to imagine I know. Being Scotland it's usually raining and the roads ain't very straight. However, where my grandfather used to take us fishing had a long(20 mile) straight road with an American style gas station which we used to stop at for provisions en route, to a secret fishing location that amongst all the greenery had a small sandy corner where we fished. At the time it always reminded me of the scenery from the dukes show and to this day it still does, and know one else knows about this spot. Dukes of hazard was only ever shown on it's original airing in the UK until the early 2000s. We missed it greatly growing up, I can honestly say I had a dream about it becoming available in a video rental store when I was younger. Moving on to my late teens/adult years, my brother and I (and my late father who used to do a small jump in his company car for us over a hump in the road when we were younger) never lost the live for everything that the show meant to us.. I always wore a Confederate flag belt buckle, I have always had cowboy boots. My second car was a 79 Camaro at age 20. Chargers are rare as hens teeth here and mega money. I built by hand a 450bhp engine for that car. Gas is currently about $13 a gallon here to give you an idea of the level of commitment. Any way, roll on to present day.. and I hope your not bored yet... I'm, 41, my big brother celebrates his 44th birthday today, he has 2 daughters and one son age 5, I have a beautiful son and daughter. My 7 year old boy is named Bo, my 5 year old nephew is named Lukas, my big brother last January introduced a freshly restored 68, 383 charger into garage, I've only got a lowly 78 Hurst hatch trans am awaiting restoration in my mum's garage, while I'm building a new House next to a reservoir/forest that could pass for hazard county, (build at a stand still just now due to lack of funds but we'll get there) in which to restore the trans am with my kids. And I still wear a rebel flag belt buckle(second one as my original wore out). I have never had anyone comment negatively on it. I was bought a mug at work by a college, I'm a fireman and everyone has a personal mug, mine is the rebel flag. So to answer your question eventually, the confederation/rebel flag to me means.. the dukes of hazard. It always has. It's never had a negative conetation at all. When my children see the flag the refer to it as the general Lee flag. Hopefully when I build my trans am, I'll be able to sell it for enough to buy a project charger. If you ever feel like seeing Scotland John, it would be a pleasure to accommodate you, talk dukes, cars, drink some beers etc. I think the biggest problem in the internet is that it's only really people with a problem or negativity that say anything, if your at peace, happy, and a good person you generally don't go online to tell people about it, hence the majority of anything online tends to be negative. What A Shame. I think the biggest problem is the frustration of knowing a minority of folks can spoil something so innocent, something that has brought such joy to many people and shaped so many lives for the better. I hope this gives you a sense of how I feel. Hope I can shake your hand one day. Kind regards. Thomas Duthie.
Confederate. An uncomfortable question.
