On a trip to California with my parents, I was eating at a lunch counter and a woman next to me asked where I was from. "Texas." "Oh, do you have horses?" "No, ma'am." "Then how many acres is your ranch?" I answered, "We live in a 2-bedroom house with a 1-car garage." She looked at me as though I had ruined all her fantasies.

I just referenced this gem on another comment; here's one I just remembered.. Waay back in the..early or mid 90's I was still volunteering @ lovely restored theatre; usually on Special Concessions aka Champagne Detail. One Sat night my pal Clyde ( who's STILL there & just turned 90!!) said I could make a few $ helping the souvenir program vendor. Leading through it I asked How much ( figuring $3-5 tops) Vendor: $10..you get 25 for selling 50 & 50c each over that.. Stunned..& almost expecting to get punched out I stood & easily sold 50 one night & 70+ on another, JFC:0 Show was Camelot starring Robert Goulet..& my best/ most memorable transaction was three as a couple got one for nice little Suzie too! Most nights Clyde & I would just count up the bubbly bucks, turn 'em in & catch the same bus to our different studio apts. He's Uber-ing or being safely chauffeured now..

Was laid off & my ex-boss called me to give me pointers on how/where to get my next job cause they wanted me off their unemployment after 2 months. If that wasn’t shitty enough, had to listen while she bragged about her new $800,000 house and the thousands she was putting into it to make it cozy. I thought she was calling me to bring me back. Meanwhile, I’m struggling to buy groceries and pay rent. Persevered & found a great job closer to home w/ more benefits/profit sharing/3 weeks VAC & awesome year end bonus! Yeah! UK poster here. Sorry, don't understand. If you were laid off, how were you on "their" unemployment???? How are they in any way accountable???
@yt650
@yt650 2 жыл бұрын
I live in Pennsylvania, I pay just under 10% of my employees wages into the unemployment compensation fund each month. If the employee was only with me for a few months let’s say, they would still be entitled for compensation and it did not affect what I had to pay to the state. The fund is made up from every worker in Pennsylvania and doesn’t Penalize the employer if the person goes on unemployment. If I had no employees, I would not pay anything to the state for unemployment compensation. You only pay if you have an employee. Depending on where you’re from it doesn’t matter how long they are eligible for compensation.
@silviac221
@silviac221 2 жыл бұрын
@@yt650 Thanks for the explanation. Argentinean poster here and it doesn't work like this in my country either so I didn't understand. So the compensation fund is made up of deductions from workers' salaries? If that's so, it's quite unfair to expect someone to go off that fund quickly if they're still jobless. Here employers pay compensation (growing amount, depending on how long you worked there) if they fire you, but it's on them. And no compensation if you resign.

A dentist once commented on the amount of work I've had done. I told her it was because I had at various times in my life not gone to a dentist for years and years. When she asked why, I told her it was because I didn't have enough money to go. She seemed genuinely perplexed. She couldn't grasp the fact that many (many many many) Americans are actually poor. Another story: I was discussing my childhood with a colleague, and I mentioned that I had grown up in trailer parks and had never lived in an actual house. She looked at me and said with great conviction, "You did NOT grow up in trailer parks." The absolute cluelessness of upper-middle-class people is hilarious.

I was mandated to be a part of the high school youth group at the church I was attending. I explained to the Youth pastor that I could not afford the activities. He told me that Ethiopians are poor and that I was not. The first event that the youth group had planned was a trip to the zoo. I was expected to pay the $75 upfront to pay for the admission, train ride, and lunch. I calculated out the actual cost and it was $25. I asked about the extra $50, which was for those that cannot afford to go. I said, like me. No, because I was not Ethiopian. This was in Washington State. If I did not participate in the youth group, I could not be a Sunday School aide. I stopped going to that church.

I grew up very poor, but because I gave up any type of teenage social life to work my a$$ off, I was able to go to a prestigious school, get a good job, buy a nice home in a nice burb, and finally get to wear nice clothes. I chose to work providing support and resources to underpriveleged families and really enjoyed it because I could relate to the people I was trying to help. Got a new manager. She called me into her office for a 'get to know you' chat. She'd read my personnel file, knew my address, looked me up and down, and the first question she posed was 'Coming from such a priveleged background, do you really think you can connect with the clients and relate to their issues?'. There's nothing wrong with having privileges and advantages--I've got some myself. The guy lived in a dorm to get the "college experience" but paid double for a private room. He went out to eat for every meal and had all of his laundry sent out because he REALLY hated doing laundry. You don't dry clean underwear or socks, so he just wore them once and tossed them in the trash. His underwear was Calvin Klein. I was working as an "assembler" for a superconductor lab, about a year ago. My Wife had just come off of worker's compensation for medical reasons and was fired illegally, when that expired. The transmission in my car also imploded, so my 30 to 40 minute commute to and from work became a 2 to 3 hour bus trip each way, on top of four 12 hour shifts per week. I had no choice but to switch to the night shift because the busses stopped running from 10:00 PM until 6:30 AM. During the time I was on the night shift, my Boss kept texting me and asking me when I was getting another car. He refused to pay me the $4.00 shift differential because the "agreement" was that I was only on night shift temporarily until I had a new car. He was basically expecting me to climb Mt. Everest while I was supporting myself and 3 others in a 2 bedroom apartment at $17.50 per hour.

It included duck, but no chicken, fish or red meat. I said to the doctor; are you going to pay for this, because my income won't stretch to duck. He instantly struck my son off the treatment register and told me to leave, citing unco-operative parent.

That's a terrible thing for a doctor to do!!! I'm a cancer survivor (I was 14, when they found the tumor) and ended up with an autoimmune disorder. My allergies didn't start until I was 25. I was eating/drinking/using products I'd previously used/consumed all my life, yet everything I touched was giving me anaphylaxis! I had anaphylaxis 4 times in a 12 hour time frame and finally realized the 4 different things I'd come in contact with had the artificial dye "Yellow 5" in it. If you'll look at "Ingredients" labeling on food and product packages, they'll tell you whether or not there's artificial dyes in the product. They include: Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Red 40, Blue Lake 60, etc. "Arm and Hammer" makes a bodywash and a deodorant called "Essentials" that is gender neutral and dye free, paraben, and aluminum free. You can find them at Walmart, or look them up online. Also, specifically "Pantene Classic 2-in-1 Shampoo and Conditioner" is a brand off my "Safety List" that my Dermatology Allergen Doctor gave me. I don't know if you have a dermatologist near you, but you could talk to them about getting your son a test done to find out his allergies. Another biggie to watch out for are products with a lot of preservatives, because they contain "formaldehyde," which is another common allergy. You can use any search engine to look up "preservatives in foods and products" which will give you a list, but anything that has "sodium" in front of it is a preservative and will convert to formaldehyde. The safest thing to do is to prepare meals from scratch, using fresh ingredients, in place of pre-made ones. (I.e. instead of buying a box of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, with the packaged, powdered cheese, buy macaroni noodles, grated cheese, and go from there!) You can make meals ahead of time and freeze them, if you're busy. I'm sure you've scoured through this already, but just to re-iterate, nuts (both tree and ground nuts) are common allergies, along with crustaceans (shell fish, like shrimp, crab, lobster) and mollusks (clams, oysters). An allergy that is unfortunately a guessing game is: nickel. Nickel is present in everything that grows out of the ground. Signs that your child is allergic to nickel/having reactions to one kind of vegetable/drink is if he gets an upset stomach, after eating/drinking something, or has a more obvious reaction, like his hands turning very red and burning, and/or he breaks out in hives. If he has a reaction, a quick/immediate response would be to give him dye free children's Benadryl, then call an ER and ask to speak to an allergen specialist, or call the Poison Control Center (which you can look up online) and tell them what your son consumed and what his reaction was; it could be anything ranging from an unusual red streak somwhere on his body, to hives, to an upset stomach, nosebleed, the "shakes," to a fever. Always err on the side of caution! If your son has any reaction to something talk to someone at the Poison Control Center, or try to find a worthwhile doctor! (I'd look for a Dermatology Center near you, because if they don't have an allergen specialist there they should be able to point you in the right direction!) It can seem extremely overwhelming at first, but you'll be surprised at how quickly you can adapt! Best of luck to you!!! ❤

@@tardismole that's great to hear!!! Trying to figure out what's going on with a little one can be really difficult! It took 29 different doctors to determine that I had Fibromyalgia and the autoimmune disorder. My back "gave out" so I went to see a chiropractor; (doctor #21) he turned every way but loose, over a 4 hour time span, and said whatever was wrong with my system was musculoskeletal. The following day, my mom took me to a local ER, because I was having severe shooting pains in my back and kidneys. (My mom has kidney stones, which can be hereditary, and thought I'd developed those). I was in the ER for 6 hours; they did X-Rays and a CT scan and concluded that what I had was musculoskeletal related. SO...the following day I called my neuro-oncologist, whom I'd seen when I had the Germinoma (germ cell tumor cancer) at 14 and he told me to come to his office immediately. I got there a few hours later and he admitted me to his wing of the hospital, so they could start me on the steroid, Prednisone, to give me the contrast Gadolinium (which had previously given me anaphylaxis) during the MRI. My neuro-oncologist, Dr. Gururangan, was afraid the Germinoma (which I originally had in the center of my brain, down into the top of my spine) had come back, in my lower spine. Dr. G did a 3 hour MRI, more X-Rays, EKGs, and a lumbar puncture and didn't find anything. I saw several doctors on his team and #25 asked a colleague if he thought it could be Fibromyalgia, as the umbrella cause for all this, and that's when they started zeroing in on that! Glad to hear your son is well! The very best to you and your family!!! ❤

In regards to difficult doctors... I had 6 and 1/2 weeks of radiation treatments. The first time I met my radiologist, at 14, he walked into the exam room, reading my chart, and without looking up he non-chalantly said, "Hmm...it appears you're going to die from this tumor." Thanks, man. Don't get me wrong, the man was brilliant; he couldn't talk to anyone on a normal level. I can't remember the number of times he said, "Let me see if I can put this into simpler terms, that you all can understand." The last time I saw him he was disappointed. He said, "Well...it looks like you're going to survive this cancer after all...I guess I have been wrong before." Some doctors can be very disconnected!

Poor people appreciate what they get more than people who have it handed to them. And a 'poor' person is more likely to help you out when you need it then a rich person. I raised both my kids on minimum wage and had to buy all their clothes at thrift shops. They had a warm roof over their heads and food on the table and they said years later, they never felt poor. They act like dicks just because they can, every single one of them, and treat anyone not of their social circle like crap. Demand special treatment, check in very late, I could go on for days. I've also had the extreme displeasure of listening, on more than one occasion, to two or more customers bragging about their wealth to each other, trying to one up the other with their exploits and family history and where they live 6 months of the year. Then they start on the politics and we step in.

I don't 4:53 was nice at all. Probably new money, and probably just the wife - someone else earned the money. I've been fortunate that most of the truly wealthy people I've known weren't like this at all. One relationship in particular at uni was based on the fact that I didn't care that he was one of the wealthiest people from his country. We spent hours telling each other of the similarities and differences in our upbringing. There is a phoneyness that has long plagued certain societies, quite prevalent in the UK, where once prestigious/wealthy families are in fact almost poverty stricken and overcompensate by attempting to demean those beneath their fraudulent "social standings". I actually lived with 2 poor little rich girls at uni. I had no idea they had it so bad until one asked me to show her how to cook pasta and all she had to eat on it was some mayonnaise and ketchup. I asked our other roommate what was going on and she explained their financial situation to me - revealing that they fought each other like cats to get to the water I used to boil my broccoli. They were both nice, being poor here in the states, but I truly believe the older one would have "saved face" if thrown back into the society in which they grew up.

You're a good kid! I understand why you thought that. Wealth isn't always about money though. Wealth can also come from knowledge (that's why you should always read), life experience (yes! Take that martial arts class and go to Paris France one day!), and from the people you meet (listen when people [and your family] they tell you someone is a bad egg!)! You are the perfect YOU, Sky! Cheaper food is usually less healthy in America. You may be able to help out in a community garden, or to grow some foods in planters with good window light at your house, or if your family has a backyard, plant a small garden of foods. Ask your mom what to grow to start. Extra fruit or vegetables can help most people maintain a healthy weight, and even if your family is on SNAP food assistance, you can buy seed packets with snap money. Start with something simple everyone in the family likes, and with a bit of regular work you don't have to buy that food anymore. ❤

@@gamewizardks No one in those tweets was whining. They were laughing at the people who are so isolated in their economic bubbles that they're oblivious to other kinds of life situations. Poor people don't feel sorry for themselves-only someone totally out of touch with the lower class would even think that. The poor, however, have strong character due to the stuggles and difficult experiences they face that the rich are oblivious to. In fact, it's the rich who whine when they don't get what they want, as they're so spoiled and accustomed to always getting their way and thus feel entitled. The poor are grateful for every little thing that they have, whereas the rich take everything they have for granted. The poor may suffer, but it's the rich who are truly miserable, as happiness is the one thing their money can't buy.

If you feel belittled or triggered by a child as the lady without a garage did then you have no sense of perspective. Kids don't know anything but the absolute world they live in and they pretty much think that's how it should be for everyone. It doesn't even sound like the kid was trying to be mean. The kid is just oblivious.

A humanitarian? I'm rather certain that, by definition, a humanitarian isn't someone who, lacking in empathy, promotes cynicism by negating the realities and experiences of those less fortunate than themselves. A humanitarian is someone who uses their words to uplift the downtrodden, not to talk down to them or tell them that poverty only strikes the lazy, apathetic, or inactive. And a true humanitarian defends the human truth, and also defends humans against bullies, like I'm doing right now. Your oblivious sentiments totally exemplify the very spirit of those Tweets: you're blissfully unaware of the myriad causes of poverty and the various sorts of circumstances that disallow some people to escape its cycles. Most people aren't poor because they aren't ambitious enough or aren't willing to work hard; and though some are fortunate enough to escape poverty, certain circumstances trap people in it. And yes, even-and especially-the children of the wealthy can be oblivious to the reality of poverty, just as impoverished children can be oblivious to the trappings of wealth. I was going to suggest some heavy reading to educate your mind, but considering your apparent intellectual limitations, perhaps you'd do well to read Charles Dickens' 𝘈 𝘊𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘮𝘢𝘴 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘰𝘭-to at least educate your heart, as it seems that therein lies your greatest deficiency.
