First, I can't thank you enough for putting out these videos. You are my favorite player to watch, and your breakdowns on these hands is involving, entertaining, and very instructive. What you are talking about in this one is exactly why I knew you'd be the best when I first saw you play (back when dinosaurs roamed the earth). You have the best skill at GETTING the kind of information you use in order to move from GTO to exploit on a player. While most everyone is worried about giving info, you get it. Hearing you talk through this hand is like having magic explained. You have always done this, and I cannot but admire your skill and talent. I'm effusive here because this hand in particular is prime dnegs magic. Great hand choice.

Hey Daniel! Thank you for all the free poker education. You were a legend before but now that you show humility and give so much to us fish you have become an idol. I love watching the wsop vlogs and hoping of one day getting out to Vegas to play. I was supposed to attend UNLV in 2005 for my junior year and was going to pursue poker part time. Illness struck 1 month before me driving out and the plans got squashed. 13 years later poker is still my dream and I try to play whenever I can with strong results. Big thanks to you and the rest of pokers original poker boom legends for keeping my hopes alive all these years watching poker games on repeat. Cheers!!

So Daniel, I have a question that I've never really gotten a full answer to. When we raise the flop here, we do it as a combination of a value raise and a semi-bluff. When I play, I try to find spots where I know there's value (ie. not the point where the opponent never calls worse and only calls better). I feel like there's a big gap in my game because I have a hard time seeing these spots where raises have qualities both of value and of semi-bluff and it leaves me missing out on a ton of equity. Do you have any advice in terms of studying that can help me in these spots?
@dnegspoker
@dnegspoker 6 жыл бұрын
It's a combination of taking control of the hand and denying equity at the same time. In this spot, he can have almost NO 3-betting range. He can only really call. So this way, when he has QJ KQ or some garbage, we deny him the free card to hit, or a scare card on the turn that we get bluffed on, like the Ace. By raising, it also narrows down his INCREDIBLY wide range considerably.

Your summation at the end nicely dovetails with what the late great Chip Reese said years ago, which is (paraphrasing): "The only thing that matters is whether you're opponent has it or doesn't have it, right now, this particular hand". In other words, playing for the "percentages", "ranges", "GTO", etc. is secondary to the best poker players in the world being able to determine whether you actually have it or don't have it, right now, this hand!

nah, I'll just watch as all the Chip Reese's of the world are forced to adapt to the new school. GTO players have changed the game and even the great hand readers like Daniel have been forced into significant change as a result. That's because, for some reason, their reads and ability to 'just know who has it" isn't cutting it anymore. Not to mention the fact that computers have started beating the best players in the world now. You think that's because they know whether their opponents 'have it' in a given hand, or because the math is on their side?

I'm sure you're joking but for other people reading this, no checking back the turn can mean literally anything and hardly changes your range in this situation or similar situtations (as daniel explains). I think you'd convey more information by making a bet (strong bet = probably defending a weak/semi-strong hand?) than simply checking back. Either you're bluffing/semi-bluffing and want to make it seem like you could be slow playing, or your hand is strong and you are slow-playing. Hard for an opponent to make a read off of such a move.

My Q is what should Luca have done differently here and what would you have done if he took a different line? IMO he should bet the river an 8 looked strong for his hand and there are very few of your possible hand combos that you could call with including overpairs to his 9's. He can fold to a raise. This is what I dislike about most hand analysis situations only one side of the equation is considered.

Oh not at all. If I raise flop, and he calls, I would be concerned that TT-QQ may not be the best hand. Also, with those hands, if I bet and he check raises the turn, that puts me in a really tough spot. Since his range is much wider than mine, he can more easily represent a strong hand on that board with a check raise.

Wow, actually this is great, best knowlage and way to present by far on youtube. I dont agree with one think you said you can raise yours overpair 77 88 jj and more and you can raise hands like 44, a4s. I think its way better raise semibluffs like a4s than pairs for obv reasons, dont you think? sorry 4 my english it might be some mistakes ;)

Theoretically against a guy opening this wide a range we can raise ANY hand on the flop.
@karolmichura1400
@karolmichura1400 6 жыл бұрын
Yea i know that, but i think its way better to raise semibluffs when you have good equity vs some made hand, and can improve to str8. In other hand you said he open like 60-65% so he can have 2p,sets,str8 allready so when you raise hand like 1010 here and he call or ever 3bet flop you are in worst spot than like having hand like a4,44,78 so i prefer most often calling with pair in similar situation( not egzacly this) I might write it in bad words, or cant write 100% what i mean and im only play 100-200$ cash mostly online and you win millions so im interested so i get it wrong or maybe i do have some point. Its also very nice of you to find time and effort and respond to your fans.

I don't understand the fold though. While Luca loses to 88 on the river, the turn card counterfeited 65. So he loses to basically the same number of combos now that he lost to on the flop when he called a raise. The 8 doesn't change much else aside from eliminating 87 from Daniel's range as Daniel is probably not going to bluff with top pair. I feel Daniel is certainly going to have bluffs here such as 65/54/44. 99 is even the ideal overpair to call down with as it blocks 97 which does eliminate some value from Daniel's range. I didn't catch exactly how big the bet was but I don't know how you fold 99 here. I would much rather fold TT or JJ.
