for those interested, the scream is called the "howie scream" and is a distant younger nephew of the classic "Wilhelm scream" (which is much older). Named after Howie Long and attributed to his perfomance in 1996's Broken Arrow, but was actually debuted in the 1980 "the ninth configuration"

Bro, the part about the "adult run" is something I've noticed and commented on for years! It's like this half-hearted attempt to look like you're trying to go "faster" for the person waiting for you, but, as you said, it's barely (if at all) faster than a regular walk! It kills me every time I see it! 🤣
@timmiller1
@timmiller1 Жыл бұрын
It’s really a social necessity. If someone holds the door for you, but you’re still a ways away from the door, it would seem rude to keep walking at the same pace, but if you took off and actually ran toward them you would look like a lunatic. Even jogging toward them would be too weird.

Dude, you brought back stuff I hadn't thought about in *decades.* I'm in my mid-30's, so I actually saw the first 2 Beethoven movies when they were in theaters (I would've been 7 or 8 at the time I think.) I didn't remember a lot from the first one, but I did remember 'the dog's been destroyed' line when you played it, and the villain wanting to shoot the dog for reasons that weren't even that clear to me as a kid. 'He's an evil guy who wears glasses, ergo he wants to shoot the dog', seemed to be all the logic that went behind it. For some reason I remembered the second movie a lot better. I remembered the scene of the creepy dude locking the girl in the room (from the inside, no less?) and how the dog collapses the front of the lakehouse and a bunch of people fall into the water. What I *didn't* remember was that a group of teenagers pouring beer on the dog was the catalyst for the whole ridiculous sequence, or that they played that amazing stock scream during that dudes fall. LOL. Laughed my ass off when you played it just now. Anyway, thanks for bringing back these absurd memories and giving me the chance to laugh at them nearly 30 years later, because I sure as hell wasn't gonna look them up on my own. On a sidenote: I always think it's hilarious how movies basically portrayed teenagers as absolute sadistic psychopaths in the 80's and 90's. 'Hur hur, we're gonna pour beer on the dog because fuck him, hur hur.' I actually remember being somewhat afraid of teenagers as a young child because of the image movies had burned into my head. Kids movies were some crazy shit back then.

Douglas Adams/John Lloyd called the adult run a "sturry" in the Meaning of Liff: "A token run. This gives the impression of hurrying without having any practical effect on their speed whatsoever."

I'm having a tough time right now, and my mind eventually drifted to "let's catch up on some Joel vids to pick up my spirits." Funny enough, it is helping in its own way. Thank you for being so genuine.

That was really nice of the Beethoven 2 editor to use Goodlongpee™ great video 3's scream. It was a little neat reference not everybody would get, yet they went for it

Joel Haver's beautiful perception on our imperfect yet secretly wondrous reality is so refreshing; and I wish this would blow up and inspire a little more intrinsically-manifested joy in people than we all currently see/experience.

Joel. Thank you for trusting your ideas. It's beautiful how much you trust your amazing brain. And how much love you give to others.

I best know the Howie scream for being inexplicably used in StarCraft as part of the sound that plays whenever you click on the Terran Academy.

I haven't watched Beethoven since it's release over 30 years ago, but I instantly knew which scenes you were talking about. That says it all, best movie series of all time.

A couple years ago, I also found a video that always makes me laugh. It's titled something like "POV: you just tuned into the history channel after 15 years." It always makes me laugh whenever I watch it. I've since subscribed to that KZbin's channel, and they still keep putting out videos that bring me joy.

2:55 This is why I love Joel. Saying out loud the stuff nobody takes very long thinking about, but it's still one of those goofy quirks of human society.

Joel, if you read this, thank you for all your work. I saw Pretend to Love Me and was just blown away. It was a moving rumination on pain and loneliness and I bet it’s helped a lot of people struggling with depression. Your body of work is the most original, most effortlessly funny and/or poignant. I think that much of your work is universal bx you are so honest about all fun and not so fun parts of line. Keep up the amazing work!!

This sketch started out very heartwarming and positive when you were showcasing the video, and then just got even better. Also, for those stumbling across this comment and who are curious: That stock scream sound effect is frequently referred to as the "Howie Long" scream.

7:00 Can we talk about how she was locked in the room with THIS type of lock? She wiggles the door knob, refusing to turn the little lock thingy, which I used to call a lock dial on those types of doors. Just wanted to point that out.

I recognize that neighborhood, specifically that one house with the green entrance gate, from your That Could Not Have Gone Worse video with Dax. I'm not familiar with that part of LA but I love those little historic leafy pockets that dot LA's otherwise dreary, mundane suburban sprawl. Also, I have never watched a Beethoven movie but I remember my cousins had all the VHS tapes and they always intrigued me. I think it's high time I watch them to finally see this '90s ridiculousness for myself.
