The problem with a lot of the new Reaper features, people have no idea they exist unless they constantly scour the update notes or seek out videos like this. I'm back using it after a few years away from music and excited to learn new ways to use the program. Thank you for your videos!

I don't use automation often, but when I do, I use automation items.

I discovered automation items a couple of months ago, and now I use them all the time. Another really handy feature in Reaper.

Awesome! Now I know how to use the automation stuff. That's amazing, anything in the FX chain that exposes it's features can be automated as well. So you can automate not only reaper track setting but plugin effects too. Even VST instrument plugins!

i noticed you didn't use the time/beats button-- if you select "beats" as the time base, a saved automation item will come back synced to new tempo.

Hey Jon, thanks for this video. The thing that's kept me from using automation items is how they split along with the items above. Since I'm working on a podcast, I'm often retooling vocal timing and deleting over the course of multiple edits. I do often use an LPF on the music to increase intelligibility of the voice. I pull down the frequency during sections of voice, then fade it back up again in the breaks. Automation items would be really useful for this, however, when I've tried them, I really wind up with a thousand little pieces of automation items due to all the splitting and deleting. . Is there a way to make the automation items ignore my edits to the audio items around them?

Hi Jeff. I think I get what you mean, that would be annoying to have so many cut up tiny AIs, but you can always glue as often as needed. Wouldn't the automation item be on the music track in that example? But for that particular task I'd probably use TDR Nova EQ with the voice as the sidechain input, so when the voice is coming in the filter changes gain.

@@TheREAPERBlog The main issue is that if I do anything related to ripple editing (which is all the time), reaper makes cuts in any underlying automation items, regardless of track. The desired effect would be similar to how envelope points work: stretching or contracting the underlying automation.

At 11:15 you say I exported FROM Tantra? Is that possible? To export an envelope from Tantra ? Or from any plugin that generates envelopes for that matter?
