Just a regular guy rambling about my Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk after 5000 miles of driving. Not a professional review.

I have a silver '18 Trailhawk. I've only done a bit of dirt at an off-road park, but I bought it to turn it into a poor man's SRT to tell the truth: SRT seats, the 5.7, 20x10s, a pair of free flow mufflers, and in lowered sport mode, it's pretty responsive. I enjoy it a lot. I do like the suede seat inserts because they are grippier. I removed the hood decal and all the badges, painted the calipers red and made some very subtle splash guards. The only other way to get a mid-size V8 SUV is pay big bucks for the SRT or something German. Yours appears basically stock, but I like the color better than mine (not offered in '18). Not sure the yellow headlights are working though, they seem a bit out of place. I know those are the OE wheels, but it looks like you have spacers in there.

I appreciate your review. I’m thinking about making the switch from an f150 eco crewcab. I love the look of these, especially trailhawk, but I’m concerned about cabin room coming from a life of full sized pickups. Thanks!
@indieelement
@indieelement 4 жыл бұрын
Turnstylee Well I can speak to that a little. I also own a 2016 Silverado Crew Cab I use to tow a travel trailer and frequently drive on weekends to keep a few miles off the Cherokee. It is a noticeable change going from one to the other. My “rado” does bot have the center console which adds to the space in the cab. At 6’1, 220 I don’t feel cramped in the Jeep at all, but rather it feels much sportier. I do find that when I am waiting in the car for someone, maybe eating in it on a roadtrip, I’ll slide the seat back to feel a little more room - which is made pretty easy with the memory seats. Grand. Cherokees are frequent rental fleet vehicles, so check your local rental companies and see if you can rent one for a day or two before making the purchase. For me I can say that after driving my truck over the weekend I’m generally happy to hop back into the Grand Cherokee on Monday morning. Good luck!!
@HiroNguy

@@indieelement Yeah I too really miss the bench seats. Those are so much better than having a stupid center console, which is useless with an automatic transmission anyway. Other than that the JGCs are the only new SUVs I even like.

Cool car, fun to drive and super comfortable. I’ve got the 5.7 hemi in a 75th anniversary and it’s perfect. I would disagree on the ko2 I’m the mud, to me it’s one of the absolute worst tires for mud. Great in sand, snow, gravel and on road. Just mud and water are horrible with them.

On my third GC since the redesign on 2013 and this time I went with the 2018 TH and by far my favorite model. I lost test drove the Hemi just to compare and I didn’t like it either. Too sluggish off the light and a lot of torque. I don’t tow so it wasn’t for me. I could feel the additional engine weight up front since I’m so used to the three V6’s I’ve owned. The V6 seemed to dance much better and I drive in deep sand a lot being in Florida so weight can be an issue. This SUV gives you the best of both worlds like you said...off-road and on road performance well mixed. I think it’s the most practical vehicle on the market today and is very well underrated at times. Never had one issue with any of them I’ve owned.

Why wasn’t a V8 for u? I’m told that the 6 cylinder engine has adequate power. I would still want & choose the V8. I have a 1998 Grand Cherokee Limited 5.2 V8 4X4 with 324K miles, with original engine, leather, moonroof, etc. Only major repair was replacing/rebuilding the transmission. Been excellent SUV & has never given me any trouble. I love it. I want another Grand Cherokee & I want a Trailhawk. But I insist on a V8. I’ve always had V8s & as long as a V8 is available, I will get it. The more power, I can have, the more worthwhile, for me. I can’t see, going from a V8 down to a 6, when the V8 is available.
@indieelement
@indieelement 4 жыл бұрын
Eddie Duarte A lot of reasons. Im not towing with it and I certainly wouldn’t plan on racing anyone with it, so $3 to $4k in pocket was a no brainer. Plus there are almost no Trailhawks for sale in Indiana and when the dealers do get them, they get loaded V6’s. Im guessing they have done more research on what sells here than me so from a resale standpoint I liked that. Plus, I found it to be an odd driving experience. Feels heavier in the front end with less punch off the line. It seems to develop power between 40 and 60 mph, which I didn’t like for the city driving I do. Drive the 6, if you feel it’s underpowered try the V8. Thats what I did and the decision was easy.

Love the tires- exact size tire/wheel I want to run on mine. Question: What size are you running for your spare? I ask because, as we all know by now, the OEM '"full-size" spare is actually thinner (245/65R18) so that it fits the spare compartment. Meaning, the equivalent for your current tires is 245/70R18. As it turns out, that is a VERY hard tire/wheel to find and it's frustrating me. Would really appreciate your input on this. Thanks man.

I’m certainly no financial expert, but I have spent a lifetime buying, trading and selling cars. One thing that is a constant, prices drop when a new design comes out. Now, in this current climate every car is overpriced - so your depreciation will be even worse when things normalize. More importantly, a brand new Grand Cherokee L is already out and the standard GC will be out right around the corner. Any dealer with a current model year is going to want to unload those. If it were my money, I’d save that $48k for a 2022 redesigned model.

Sure I’ll try. I was disappointed as I was expecting the 5.7 Hemi that was in my truck. Torquey, loud and mean. Its not. Its 35 less horsepower than whats in the truck and it feels uneven power wise. A heavy pedal is needed to get off the line at a stop light then its overpowered and suddenly you are going 60. I had to really think about pedal position to maintain 35 to 45 around town. And as I said before, with the stock exhaust it sounds terrible. I drove them back to back, and the V6 seemed more nimble and the power was where I needed it.

This guy is crazy... I have the 2019 TH Hemi... and it blows the doors off any V6. Any common sense review will also show you the torque is what is needed if going off road and you do NOT get that with the V6. We have amateurs here comparing lame trucks with JEEPS! If you want a truck snap your trap and go get one. I actually have a cousin that has the same Hemi in his 2019 truck... I crushed him in stand still 1/4 mile. NOTE: I did take off the right side exhaust muffler.. giving me about 1-2 more horsepower. I am putting on a CORSA CatBack in Feb giving an additional 7-10HP more. Finally, I have gone up Rock HILLS, through mud laden swamps, sand, stone quarries.. and crushed it all. Off Road Parks are amazing! and 80% JEEP for ONE reason.... No One Else Compares! Now I will never compare my GC TH to a true Off Road Capable Wrangler. My son has one and I can keep up most of the time, but the Wrangler is the best off road ever. REALITY Check, I live in comfort and can crush any Wrangler 0-60 and can do 80% of what any stock Wrangler can do. BUY The Trail Hawk Hemi !

shift intohigh I have both. 2020 Rubicon and 2019 Trailhawk V8, which rocks! I defiantly cruise comfortably at 80 mph in my Rubicon. Excellent road and off road vehicle. Love both!

Do the yellow covers affect the distance and color a lot on the LED light?
@indieelement
@indieelement 5 жыл бұрын
Storm Sturckow yes they do turn the daytime running led strip yellow, but they are still noticeable at distance. Tye lights overall do dim, but not like the tinted covers people used to run. I am blind as a bat at night and these still provide me tons of light.

Haha. You sure did. I did a road trip 3 years ago following Route 66. My phone and my in car nav both were too hard to look ahead on to see where the old road and new roads merged. I kept ending up on interstate. Old school map solved that. Plus it’s handy on multi day road trips to find the “out of the way” routes.

How's the sound system???
@indieelement
@indieelement 2 жыл бұрын
I am probably the last person to rate a sound system, but it sounded clean, bass was good and didn’t rattle loose buts on the car. If I can hear my music with the windows down on the highway, its good enough for me The infotainment systems on Chrysler vehicles is the best out there, hands down. So while the sound I may not be an expert on, I can tell you nothing compares to their head unit and software.

Why was the V8 not for you??
@indieelement
@indieelement 5 жыл бұрын
A couple reasons. I commute 75 miles a day to work and take small road trips almost every weekend so the gas mileage was the biggest factor. I also preferred the sound of the V6. Finally, the V8 I test drove had a weird acceleration pattern. Sluggish around 20-30 miles but seemed to jump to 60+ with quickness. So in city street driving I found I had to think about pedal action or else I was going too slow or two fast. Hard to explain.

indieelement thanks for the reply. I’m currently in the market for this exact one. We were going to go v8 but it’s impossible to find one right now in the Sting gray. Sooo it sounds like it’s probably for the best. I’m actually hoping the dealer is able to get mine in today.

My Grand Cherokee is a third vehicle, Hemi V8 4X4. 600 miles in two days, back in the garage for a month or next road trip. If I use it as a daily driver in L.A. 12 to 13 MPG. Excellent performance for open roads through the deserts and hills of California, expensive commuter vehicle.

@@MrXerxes I was curious why the mileage would be so different than my 2019 Ram Rebel. I have the 5.7 V8 Hemi and average around 17.5. I would think the GC would be lighter and get better MPGs?

Six cylinder jeeplife Bruno, they are just the 265/65. Some say at 285 will fit but when it’s in aero mode these are pretty close in the front.

Urgent trailhawk advice needed: looking at USED 2019 JGC trailhawk, from carmax, $38K, both are V8 (which I think I prefer) but both were RENTALS. Does anyone have a concern with this model having 13K miles put on it on 4 months? One had 700 miles a week put on it. The other 900iles a week. Both were driven for about 4 to 5 months. Is that many miles in a shorter period time than average a concern for anyone?
@indieelement
@indieelement 4 жыл бұрын
Well I have a 70 mile commute I drive this every day, I’ve done a couple of road trips, and I go somewhere almost every weekend. I’ve done 12600 miles in 7 months. So that mileage does seem pretty high. But I have owned 2 cars that were previous rentals and both were just fine...but I bought them off rental because the dealerships really dealed on them. So I would go in closer to $35k or less if it was me buying it.

... What's more important is how those miles were covered. Hwy cruising (Canonball Run I & II style)? Valet parking (aka ferris bueller style)? Bank robbing baby driver style? King of the hammers? How those miles were put on is just as important as how many. If concerned, use it as a a bargaining point. If unhappy, walk away.

My off-roading tends to be limited to non-maintained roads in State and National Parks and it was obviously more than capable for that. Only real challenge was a badly rutted road where some whee articulation was needed and I drug the skid a few times - but nothing where I felt more vehicle was needed
