One of the most disturbing movies I've ever seen. It really takes on the subject of separation and adds the metaphysical dimension to it (The creature). But I can't say I could fully understand the movie, as it has so much to it. It's not a movie that you can fathom in just one time viewing

Love this movie. A forgotten masterpiece. The title has many meanings throughout the movie. Definitely a must see!!!

This is the first time I've seen someone talk about this movie and not mention the nightmarish creature! That part overshadoweds the rest film with how nasty it is and how it's never explained what the he'll it is, we're it came from and what it wants.

Kevin Clark I think it’s a demon

it needs no explanation: it is the horridness of betrayal in a relationship taken shape, the unspeakable monstrous truth-thing that is born out of lies, revealed in all its abomination. "It" is both made of unfulfilled wants and "It" wants nothing or rather - we will never know what it wants - because there is no "we" (in the relationship sense of the couple) any longer.

@@bumbozambumbazebulon6738 It seemed like the replacement Sam Neil at the end was created from this monster and the death of the leads symbolized the death of their relationship... and then there was ... chaos? The boy Bob seemed to drown himself and the two replacements seemed totally unrelatable.

@@rometimed1382 I think Bob drowns himself because he sees the chaos the two clones will create together. Since the clones are each others perfect view of each other their combined relationship creates the chaos at the end

I think she "gives birth" to it during the subway scene (hence all the bodily goo and the references to a "miscarriage" when she was not visibly pregnant)

i completely agree with you concerning this film. i've never seen it as a horror film, in the usual sense of the word, or a "video nasty." to me, it hit home as a young boy of 9. this is exactly what my parents' divorce was like...in its most pure, bestial expression. glad there are people who love this film. you know, the best companion piece i can think of to see with possession as a double feature is ingmar bergman's scenes from a marriage.

Yet there is so much more to this film than man vs woman.

@@sealife12 definitely. it is one of those rarities that seems to give new insight at different stages in one's life, whatever may be happening, this film will give you some insight into the situation. there aren't many films that have this kind of potency. this director, zulawski, also did another powerful film i totally reccomend: l'important c'est d'aimer, the important thing is to love, or the u.s. title "that most important thing - love" this one will smack you unconscious with its whirlwind of emotions. check it out. :D

I can see a lot of parallels between this movie and Silent Hill the game.

SPOILER Maybe we can say that they died trying across the wall. They were gun down in the end just like the people that tried to go over the wall.
