There's a channel called "How To Drink", which goes over recipes for various alcoholic beverages. The intro for the older videos would show clips of preparing the drink that was going to be featured for that particular video, but the final bit of the intro that had the name of the show was always the same shot of an old-fashioned. My favorite comment I ever saw on one of those videos claimed that watching the intros for the various episodes showed the sad tale of a cursed bartender, doomed to have every single cocktail and beverage he ever made turn into an old-fashioned before he could drink it.

I think the reason for the narrator informing people about Hideyoshi is that, back then, it was apparently common to change your name to reflect higher status, so Hideyoshi would've referred to himself by that name at the time, but unless you are a diehard fan of Sengoku history to memorize who was called what by then, you never would know that that was Hideyoshi, whereas even passive fans of the time know who Toyotomi Hideyoshi is.
@LeNoir6793 жыл бұрын
As a matter of fact, I believe Hideyoshi changed his name (or had it changed by superiors) at least 3 times. He started as the lowest class (maybe slave, can't remember) in Japan but eventually became emperor, so he had many names.

Ok, one thing about those Kaede sections: get close to a monster, lock-on, then double-tap the direction towards the monster (up on the D-pad in vanilla), Kaede will vault over and land behind the enemy. Now, as a Kunoichi, Kaede can instantly kill an enemy if you attack from behind (with a special animation). Once I learned to do this vault-and-assassinate move reliably, her sections became my favorite parts of the game. Highly recommended if anyone hasn’t tried it.

11:55 I'm surprised you missed the explanation for the Onimusha transformation considering you described only a minute earlier. Its established that when a human is at the height of despair their blood is at its most potent. Thus when Samonosuke is on the brink of being crushed by Fortinbras and he is certain that Princess Yuki will die due to his failure, his blood infuses the gauntlet and empowers him. Its pretty standard shonen anime bullshit, but its relatively internally consistent. All the times Samonosuke can die midway through the campaign, or indeed during the final boss fight? He just wasn't SAD enough to trigger the transformation.

Onimusha came out around the time I was first getting into Feudal Japanese history. Ever since I read James Clavell's SHOGUN and watched Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai, I got really into games like these. I never got to play Onimusha on my own, but my best friends played them a lot whenever I visited them. The Tenchu series and Onimusha were the main Feudal Japanese games I encountered, and they left quite an impression on me. It's a shame that certain characters and plot points in the first game didn't get revisited or resolved in the sequels. It's funny that the freaky short guy who is on the villains' side is supposed to be Toyotomi Hedeyoshi, the man who managed to attain the dictator title of the Taiko but not shogun after Nobunaga's demise. His reign as Taiko was brief, and his only heir didn't survive to become the next Taiko once Tokugawa became shogun. I do wonder how Ieyasu Tokugawa, the guy who became shogun after Hedeyoshi, would've figured into Onimusha's universe. He didn't ally with demons, but he was brilliant, calculating, and ruthless. Tokugawa's alter ego in Clavell's SHOGUN, Toranaga, gives a fictionalized glimpse into how effectively calculating Tokugawa must've been. It's kind of funny to think of Nobunaga siding with demons, because I think the demons of Onimusha might've found the historical Nobunaga to be irritating. Though he was a great daimyo, Nobunaga was pretty excessive and a difficult lord to work for. One of his retainers found him so difficult to serve, he committed suicide, and told Nobunaga how difficult it was to work for him in his note. I recommend checking out Kurosawa's film Kagemusha, since that film gives rather an interesting dramatization of Nobunaga. I know I'm rambling, but the history that inspired games like Onimusha is pretty fascinating. Good going on the review, Johnny!

I'm surprised there was no Rosencrantz alongside Guildenstern.

Bro are you losing weight? You're looking good dude! Good on you. Onimusha is something I hope we see more of in the future. Its a dope idea with fun execution that is a great example of Capcom just being themselves and killing it
