I bought myself a 750watt ebike this week thinking I'd be fine to ride it legally in the UK. I returned it once I realised I couldn't. I bought it from Engwe direct and their website doesn't say they are illegal in the UK despite them having a UK warehouse. Many KZbinrs stick 250watt stickers on them to get away with it and I've seen a few telling you other ways to hide from the police. I know how great these bikes are which is why I wanted one. I also watched your video on how to register a high powered ebike with the DVLA and there is no way I'd want to do that with only a 750watt. I wish they would change the laws as this tech is brilliant. So now I'm ebike-less as I won't ride a 250watt slug. Back to my old pedal bike.

Hi Andy. I've been watching your videos for a long time. I live in Upstate New York and I've been riding e-bikes and building e-bikes for going on 7 years now. Not a lot a bikes but always making better bikes and shedding off my older bikes. I've only had two issues. One with a guy in a beat up pickup truck that said I'm a menace to all the drivers on the road and that my e-bike was totally illegal, and the other was just about a week ago where I passed a guy on a road bike and he started swearing and calling me all kinds of vulgar names...You Fn this and that. The police on the other hand have never given me any trouble what so ever. The bike will go 40 miles an hour but a car can go 100 miles an hour. We don't go 100 miles an hour legally. I outfitted my bike with directional signals for added safety and I ride in a responsible manner and I'm respectful to manual bike riders. There will always be those who are jealous that you have something they don't have or can't afford. The road rider caught up to me at a red light and told me that "That's Cheating!"... I'm 61 years old and tore the meniscus in my right knee. If that's cheating... I hope that I can cheat in to my 70's or even my 80's with a trike. I think that If you're having fun, the powers to be will want to tax it. That's what they do. In New York State, the speed limit on e-bikes is 20 miles an hour I believe. The right side of the roads where I live are designated as bike lanes. Not all of them but a good number of them. The problem is that people are allowed to park their cars on the same side of the road. In the bike lane. We all have to work and live together so that's not a problem. The problem is that I have to go out into traffic, which is totally legal, to go around the parked cars, but I'm restricted to 20 miles an hour. This means that I am going 10 miles an hour slower than the rest of traffic. If the speed was adjusted to 30 miles an hour I could just go around the cars at the speed of traffic in most cases, not all, and get back on the bike lane without slowing down the traffic flow. The other issue is all the storm water drains, manhole covers, black ice in the winter, and debris that clogs up the sides of the road. Manhole covers and Rainwater Grates get pounded down over time. Usually from Snow Plows and I've seen manhole covers that have been pounded down four inches or more. Nothing you want to hit on any bike. Long story short... Having a bike that can keep up with traffic when It needs to legally be in the traffic flow makes sense. Use of a helmet should be mandatory, and turn signals will make that transition easier, safer and smarter. Most people have no clue when you use hand signals. Change takes time. The patent for the first electric bike in the United States was in 1897. Look it up because it doesn't look much different to the early modern e-bikes. I'm pretty sure that that was before people had electric lights! The best thing about electric battery technology is that after your electric car batteries become depleted, you can use them for a battery bank to use for a solar array on your house to power your house, or at least supplement your power consumption. As those batteries become depleted, you can use them for e-bikes and power tools. It's truly a technology that keeps giving and saving. I love the hand me down idea when it comes to the batteries. As battery technology becomes more affordable, and it is, you can hand down the older depleted batteries to others who are just getting into it. The batteries aren't dead. They have a reduced capacity or volume of capacity. With battery technology your taking the energy, dumping the stress on the battery and using the energy that remains on a system that requires less stress and can be used for other things until it is Dead. By then I will be gone and greatfull.

Fair play Andy. Good for you. I wholeheartedly agree with you. The current regulations around ebikes/emobility definitely should be reviewed. After all, if more and more people start to build and/or modifying their own electric vehicles, then clearly a suitable infrastructure should be implemented to encourage, inspire and educate the masses. Keep up the good vids mate.
@ThanosSustainable5 жыл бұрын
Indeed; The regulations suck. But there are regulations, in order to be able to live with other people peacefully. What if you kill someone by landing on them with your multi-kW e-bike? What happens then?
@jakegarrett81095 жыл бұрын
thanar then it’s vehicular manslaughter. Fun fact if you want to kill someone in the US, put them on a bicycle in Oklahoma and it only costs you $500 to kill a cyclist, really looking out for them right? A small door ding costs $3k usually... Also fun fact in Texas there is no power or speed limit when pedaling, so my aim is 50 mph (I often average 28mph just pedaling, so basically need to double my speed) so I can go with the flow of traffic which is way safer and better for everyone. Also fun fact most countries you can fly airplanes without a pilots license, so your question of “if this bicycle kills someone” is the same as any other vehicle known to man regardless if it’s a skateboard to a monster truck (also note that person isn’t going to care how they died, they died!). Plus what are the chances you do? It’s seriously low compared to car or other real vehicle, the only person that is likely to die is the rider.

Alan statutes and acts only apply to those who consent. Theresa May when Home Secretary said in an interview that we are policed by consent, you can go and check. You consent by your acquiescence to these acts/statutes and though the incorrect use of language as defined in blacks law, for example, driving is a term used to describe one who is operating a motor vehicle for commerce, where as most of the time you're in your car you are actually "travelling" in a "private conveyance". Police only operate in the public system not the private . Language tricks!!! If stopped by police the answer is simply, "I don't answer questions". Nobody can make you speak and police can't do anything without a paper trail. They will use fear to try and get you to comply, never back down, never surrender. Never carry ID especially that which does not belong to you. Which none of yours or anyone's does, because you're not a corporation and if you look at your name you'll see it's been capitalised. That's not english FYI. Also look into capitus dominius maxima. This bullshit has gone on too long. Don't let your ego get pulled into their spelling trickery. "I don't answer questions" should be your only response.

Michigan here in the state has this as the ebike Law. An electric bicycle (or e-bike) is a bicycle that has a small rechargeable electric motor that can give a boost to the pedaling rider and on some models can take over completely. To qualify as an electric bike in Michigan, it must meet the following requirements: It must have a seat or saddle for the rider to sit on. There must be fully operational pedals. It must have an electric motor of no more than 750 watts, or 1 horsepower. Whether you can ride an electric bicycle on a trail depends on several factors - the e-bike's class, the type of trail, and whether the authority that manages or oversees the trail allows the use. You can read the full legislation here, or see below for a summary

Hey Andy. Please do use your platform to try to change the situation. I've been banging on about this for ages but have no platform. I'm only using an overvolted 250W motor to do about 28mph max to commute to work but I normally just pedal at 20mph with a bit of assist. It means that I can keep up with the flow of traffic and not hold anyone up. If I was Mark Cavendish then I could do that speed on a normal bike, so what's the issue? I'm happy enough to get third party insurance if only it were possible; as you say, getting a MSVA is a non-starter and I want a bicycle... If I want a motorcycle then I've got a full licence and can buy whatever litre rocketship I want... But I just want a bicycle and no hassle!

Brian Hinton yeah I averaged like 28 mph during race season, I was doing 19 mph even on gravel after being off the bike for over 6 months. 15 is slower than a lot of children’s scooters, there’s no way that’s safe on the road! I can easily put pedal that with one leg...
@TimpBizkit3 жыл бұрын
@@jakegarrett8109 I think the original purpose was not to simulate a 50cc scooter - but like a normal bike that is easier to go uphill, though I agree that it is still a pain to ride a normal bike in fast urban traffic, though unlimited power and maybe a 20 mph limit sounds more sensible. It's possible but it feels like you've just done an interval training workout. I say unlimited power as long as you don't accidentally drift round a junction and fall off. It would still require sensible use on a shared use path. I don't think I'd trust any old teenager to ride my Bafang BBS02B kit sensibly. Though I've had problem with normal bikes where a kid pulled out of a side path in front of me. He said "sorry" sheepishly but I had to jam on the brakes although I was only doing 10 mph.

As for your standard bicycle level e-bike with the small motor and the speed limiter. They were designed to have top speeds similar to a standard bicycle so they will still go down a hill at speed and on the flat but on hills where a rider cannot sustain 15 mph the motor will help. Of course my needs for an electric bike are not primarily getting up a hill a bit quicker, but riding in cities without a swarm of drivers trying to get past, so being able to reach 30 mph and a little bit more is useful without a huge effort. I could teach 30 on an unlimited 250 watt mid drive bike and even on a bike with only leg power but it is hard work. Another bonus is that it does not intimidate on cycling infrastructure. If I prefer to take a shared use path at 15 mph because i can't be bothered with the hectic roads, then a 2 stroke 50cc is still going to be intimidating at reduced speed and must by law stay on the road, but this thing can roll along like a peaceful bicycle if i feather the throttle or turn off the motor. I am not chasing racing performance or over 60 mph speeds as they require very high power and are dangerous on potholes.
@freedombikes26855 жыл бұрын
Brilliant vids Andy! So I can roll down hill on a 30mph limit road on my MTB without breaking the law? However, travelling up the same road at 30mph on a E-bike is illegal because the assistance level above 250w 36v is too high? now thats baffling!

Spoke to two local plods about the scummy kids running around on motorbikes on the green belt at the side of my house. It's a essentially a cut through for drug couriers. They said they were aware, but had to choose their battles. So that was a clear green light for me and my ebike. Difference is, my ebike might be mildly illegal, but my cargo ( usually destined for the Post Office) isn't.

Lots of great points here. We need to keep showing that it's not all about speed and cool shots, but that the biggest risk bicycle commuters face is speed disparity. High powered eBikes or lightweight LEV's allow us an efficient means of safely maintaining the flow of traffic until the bloated automobile gets phased out. I can't count how many bike lanes around here suddenly end forcing us onto the sidewalk - or worse with no shoulder lane and a single passenger in a giant SUV barreling behind us at 45 mph. Sidewalks are for pedestrians, roads were built for bikes!

I’m in the USA. A 20 mph eBike is same as a bicycle, and treated as a bicycle on all multiple use trails and paths and roadways. A 28 mph eBike is not allowed on stand alone multi-use trails, but is otherwise considered a bicycle, and treated as a bicycle on all roadways. Most production mountain eBikes are speed regulated at 20 mph. Most road style, and commuter style, production eBikes are built as 28 mph restricted eBikes.

Its quite embarrassing how some people waste their time. The legal situation in UK is quite similar to the situation in germany, and I've been threatened by viewers many times that they'll report my videos to the police. But I was glad the police still have crimes to solve, not destroy the life of some electric vehicle builders. Because they could legally take your driving license for this stuff. Even when I was working at a startup for a bigger car manufacturer developing a ebike, we didnt have any registration for the vehicle because it's literally impossible to get that for a prototype. So many people would love to ride electric vehicles but are just afraid of the consequences and even developers and inventors have no chance of riding any vehicles without fear. I read a good quote a while ago: "If Carl Benz lived with today's law, the car would've never been invented."

Well what I have researched on both sides of the pond US versus UK , as you state openly some states have banned E-Bikes completely while others disallow E-Bikers to travel on non freeways as they are limited unless 1000 Watt machines . Where I live in Scotland at the top of a 1 in 6 hill I really need a bigger output that 250 Watts but then if I do so , run the excess laws which are pretty incredible up my way - not that many ride E-Bikes and prefer normal pedal power. So that is my rant over.

I understand your frustration. I spent nearly 6 months getting a Californian 2 stroke cycle on the road in 1980's. Having taken it to Blackpole Police HQ, we settled on an agreement. I could run it under power for 6 miles a week and insure it as an agricultural vehicle.

I've always thought the current situation with ebikes being so restricted on power and speed, making them basically useless for usable transport. Also having a bike that can keep up with the flow of traffic, makes it a much better solution for commuting.
@cjeam91994 жыл бұрын
They’re not basically useless at current power levels, they’re a perfect assisted bicycle. The speed pedelec level allows an assisted bicycle that can also keep up with traffic in urban environments. Anything that works on a throttle or has a higher top speed not unreasonably needs a licence.
@peterweeds46824 жыл бұрын
