I've been a Curtis Stone subscriber for well over a year. He's a goldmine of information and the best no-nonsense teacher out there. So glad you were able to get him out to your garden. Thanks Wranglerstar.

He suggests 2X4s for supporting net covers. Instead consider galvanized half inch dia. electric conduit. It is cheap; can get in 10' lengths; won't rust or soak up water; can be bent to need; can slip over rebar stakes; can be joined/intersected with off the shelf parts; can be zip tied easily to hold nets or drip lines; can be re-used for other things; etc.
@now1more7 жыл бұрын
Or PVC. I do prefer galvanized though.
@Enjoy_my_1st_Amendment7 жыл бұрын
No pvc. It will sag considerably out in the elements under its own weight. Conduit, top poles of chain link fence or heavy gauge electric fence wire. Sand bag the bottom here and there and your good to go.

I use main line tubing with smaller tubing coming off. H.D. has mini spray heads with extendable shafts and each can be either run full, turned down or turned off. So you can really control when and where the water goes. Spray heads come in a variety of spray patterns. The whole system is on battery powered timers with an in-line filter closest to the tap, then the timer, and then the 4 way spliter with each having an on/off servicing 4 main lines. Nice to have it all work on its own, though you are constantly adjusting for plant needs. Great to be gone for the day or two and know the garden is safe and happy. Good job, Curtis and Wranglerstars....

Great collaboration with Curtis! I've been watching him for years! He and I don't do things exactly the same but I certainly have learned a lot from him. We grow different crops, for sure, but still learn tons from him. He doesn't have the time to invest in a lot of "long" crops (potatoes, peas, beans etc) but really is an expert on "short" crops and quick turnover. He is a master at intensive, rotational, succession plantings that yield quickly and are very marketable in his area. His microgreen (sunflower, pea and radish for the most part) production in his greenhouse is a sight to behold! Those crops are turning over in 10 days or so......One thing he didn't mention here is that he does the majority of it on land (back yards, vacant lots etc) that he doesn't own in an urban setting. His sense of organization amazes me...wish I were better at it!

I was pleased to see you collaborate with Curtis Stone, and acquire some insight to his enterprise. I have been following his work almost as long as your own. You will definitely improve your harvest by pursuit of the low labor crops first - fruit trees - squash and berries that do well in your climate. Then the greens and other veggies will fill your time and you will be prepared to barter your crop surplus. It will become a great management education tool for Jack. It will take more time than expected to acquire all of the equipment and supplies to grow your endeavor.

Cody watching Curtis over the last several years and his quest ov ruthless food growing effienciency gave me the knowledge to do several community gardens and allotments and ultimately change my career from a carpenter, to opening my own urban farm and our newest venture of growing veg in old shipping containers turned into greenhouses with some having grow lights in schools, so kids get healthier foods, the containers become a classroom to teach them about healthy eating, it employs a gardener so creates jobs and all this produces food at a cheaper cost than buying in the same equivalent food they used to. soak up everything Curtis has to offer. learning from specialists like curtis in certain fields will only make your homestead a better more productive place for you and your family. keep up the good videos. love your approach and attitude to the old ways.

The higher sides on the raised bed do have one advantage, which is that you can turn them into a cold frame very easily. Regarding irrigation, my personal experience is that mulching around the plants makes an ENORMOUS difference in water retention in raised beds. The optimal width of a raised bed for me is as wide as possible while keeping it narrow enough that you can work on the center of the bed from either side easily. When I transfer tomatoes from a pot to a bed, I trim off all the lower leaves/branches and bury the tomato plant on its side with just the top sticking out of the ground. Roots sprout all along the buried "trunk" of the tomato and it makes the plant more vigorous. Also don't plant too deep as that will kill a tomato plant.

A solution for the greenhouse, could be to make a dome one. Built one in Iceland (greenhouse and northern light "igloo guesthouse"). Never had any issues with either snow or hurricane (survived winds of 210kph with no damage). And we get LOADS of snow in the north. I found it worked well because you can play with how you lay out your plants depending if they're creepers (they can go up the structure) or if they prefer more heat etc.... Also very cheap to make and as a carpenter I really enjoyed it as it brought a whole new set of technical challenges I had never come across.

Great to see you guys colaborating with Curtis...his gardening skills for sales is insanely dialed in. Garden suggestion: Compost...get some plastic trash cans, since your property is so large, suggest rolling ones.Kitchen waste, coffee grounds, hair, leaves, weeds that haven't gone to seed, ripped up paper bags, mail ( non slick adverts) torn up, little bit of water, manures, even pine shaving/ saw dust from Mr. W's shop over time it will break down. Can used urine in cup, several times to get it started with good bacteria. I use a 2 plastic bags laid flat over the can then put on lid to help keep bugs out, to take up the difference under lid and can rim area. Use your compost to mix in with your soil when planting, also sugggest coconut core sp? to help retain moisture then mulch on top to help keep moisrure in beds.
