Someone had to see The 355, and it's been a hot minute since I have reviewed a female spy movie. Compared to my expectations the movie is surprisingly watchable, but I do still have tweaks and complaints. The 355 stars Jessica Chastain, Diane Kruger, Penelope Cruz, Lupita Nyong'o, and BingBing Fan.

my biggest movie pet peeve is when there's a clear way for the movie's conflict to be resolved and the only reason it doesn't get resolved it's obviously because then the movie would be over in half the runtime and I don't mean because the characters are dumb, or they don't have a vital piece of information that would help them come up with a solution or something like that, I mean specifically when there's literally no other reason that a solution can't be used other than "but then the movie would be over too soon" if that's the case then the movie SHOULD be over sooner, I don't care lol

In what might be the most trivial thing to be annoyed by, is that Mace chooses a strapless dress for a mission. Okay..maybe she didn't expect a fistfight but prepare for all possibilities girl. I found her whole fight scene uncomfortable to watch cos I was expecting a slip any second. Wear a jumpsuit like Marie! Something with straps, something with legs, easier to fight in. Still looks classy and fits the auction vibe. Again, trivial concern. But it bugged me so much 😂🤣
@nicolescats2

If you want something more practical, and a dress, halter top absurdly short dress. Halter top keeps it from falling down, the lack of material keeps it from getting in your way, while still having enough on to (somewhat) blend into a crowd afterwards if needed. You can have a short flowy dress on a character that just doesn't care about her dress revealing things in the wind because the shortness makes it more practical for fights/occasionally distracts others in a useful manner. And this type of dress would fit really well in a gathering of rich a-holes (the auction). Note that I have not seen the movie, I've just seen the impractical dress to blend in strategy too many times when there are often multiple other options.

When a mediocre action movie staring men comes out no one cares but when it's a female led action movie people say it flopped because it's "political" the discourse is so obnoxious and sexist
@robinthrush9672
@robinthrush9672 2 жыл бұрын
It's the bounce-back from _selling_ the movie on the sex/diversity of the cast rather than the premise/action of the movie. And the past reaction from Hollywood antagonizing poor performances of female-led movies on sexism, sometimes after marketing on sexism directly (Charlie's Angels, for example). Also the quantity of male-led movies allows for more "meh" feelings.

Here's what I don't get (and I didn't watch the movie). Why would you make a female action/thriller movie with actresses that don't do action? You can have Ronda Rousey, Michelle Rodriguez, Gina Carano, Rebecca Ferguson, Lucy Liu, Angelina Jolie, Zoe Saldana, Charlize Theron, Halle Berry, Ming-Na Wen, Scarlet Johansson, and I can keep going on and on. Is not that you don't have a big pool to dip into to make a "diverse cast".

I thought it was decent enough. With all the complaining about “women are taking all the male roles and making them female. They should just make their own female led action movies.” (Terminator Dark Fate and James Bond for example.) so I decided to go see it. I hope it does well enough to make a sequel and the studio/director can fix the issues with the first movie. If it does well enough even if it’s not that great we will see more female led action/spy movies that are better.

20:21 I agree, most fight scenes come down to editing. I feel like the best leave some to our imaginations because what we conjure up in our minds is not constrained by things that filmmakers have to consider when choreographing a fight sequence: MPAA ratings, making sure no actor or stunt person gets hurt, the visually medium limiting how much you can convey pain, physical exhaustion, and the weight of a character's movements, and so on. But most big budget movies are made with an army of producers and investors who think that in order for the audience to enjoy a fight scene that have to see as much as possible and we can't be confused at any point. We have to see every blow but also they cut away whenever something else is happening so we're constantly up to speed on the plot. We're left with what should be climatic fight scenes being cut up to a million pieces as we get a close up of the punching, then a reaction shot of said punch, followed by a wide shot of more punching, then a shot of another character running towards the fight, then another close up of a punch in a matter of seconds (if not within the second). It's deflates the tension and takes me out of the movie.

It really makes me appreciate your videos (& other ppls art/content) so much more. Non of the promotional spots on tv interested me enough to want to see the movie that doesn’t mean any of the actress are bad just that the promotional spots failed to do what they were meant to do make us want to se the movie it feels like the plot didn’t make sense cause they had 2 place where the movie could have ended when they were “celebrating” the mission was completed but more got tacked on after with seeing the planes on tv then it could have ended right after they get the drive and finally destroy it like a ghostbusters style ending without the 2 months later thing

I am not going to see it in cinemas (thanks covid), but definitely on some streamer. I was mostly interested in Sebastian Stan. Didnt have the highest hope for it, until I saw who directed it (Simon Kinberg, i.e. Dark Phoenix) and who had written it (forgot the name, but the writer of Catwoman). So no surprise that it wasn't good.

as someone who's fave type of character is female spy/assassin, i was looking forward to this movie when the first trailer dropped. but yeah, it was just okay. not unwatchable but i probably wouldn't watch it again. mace's character was poorly written and i definitely agree that her and marie had much better chemistry than her and nick - was rooting for them to get together in the end and was quite disappointed with their awkward goodbye.

Movie is has the same plot as Furious 6 and the eye. 90 percent of the comments are I didn't know this movie existed or I'll watch it on streaming. The movie bombed because no one wants to watch a mediocre movie.

I see you cater. The comments in the movie doesn’t support anything you said. Movie was bad. Just happened to be a deliberate all female cast. Not even the population they said admittedly targeted did not go to watch it. So when you say, you don’t believe “such and such” was their intentions, you’re being delusional. They intended to make a female film. It was just horrible.

In today's climate, an all woman spy thriller would have to have at least one big name. I am not saying these women aren't talented, they truly are. But we need one mega star. Male or female.

"wtf is omnicron" ? sounds like a Transformers villain xD Is that an American thing? I've literally only heard people from the US pronounce "omicron" as "omnicron" ever. This film seems UNLIKELY to make back it's budget lol. To break even it'd need to have a miracle at this point frankly. I don't buy that whole "covid is preventing people going to the cinema" excuse at this point frankly because we saw Spiderman make over a billion dollars STILL despite movies before and after doing terribly. I think people are just tired of the same old Hollywood predictable trash. Remakes and Reboots and Requels (i hate that's becoming a term) and films that are just "what if X, but with all women!" or "what if X, but with everyone race/gender identity changed!". People are tired of it and that's why stuff like this flops (as well as bad writers being given jobs because of politics but that's a whole other conversation) but stuff like Spiderman broke records. People want ESCAPISM from their fantasy/sci-fi/superhero/action adventures. People want to forget the BS of the real world for a while, instead of being beaten over the head with it like Hollywood loves to do in recent years. With all the subtlety and tact of a jackhammer.

I personally enjoyed the film, but I just wanted to see a popcorn action film with women in it so I wasn't too bothered by the fact it was a bit dumb. Diane Kruger was the HIGHLIGHT of the film, her playing the slightly unhinged german spy was clearly what she wanted to play. I also enjoyed the women having their downtime, Penelope Cruz was very funny in her role and I want to see her in more funny films, but Lupita's accent was IFFY at points. Idk if non british people could tell but yeah, it was inconsistent.

I am kind of bored of almost any prominent British characters in films nowadays have a London accent. It would be refreshing if they would have more British characters in films who have other English accents or even a Scottish or Welsh accent.

Seems like a small detail, but looks like they don't even check the movie when it's done edit: also, not destroying it first time was stupid, they gave no clear reason as to why it should be kept safe. maybe would have been great if they were never able to get their hands on it till the end

The change to the dynamic would have worked...but hollywood doesnt like to portrey women as the one who wants the man when they are "Strong independent women". So they chose to do something that didnt work so they can uphold the "She is strong, she dont need no man" mentality. Its in a LOT of movies now.
