I have a 25 year old Corian kitchen countertop/double sink that had a "plastic" sink strainer in the left-hand sink. It looks exactly like the one in your video - and it didn't match any of the other strainers in any of the other videos I watched. Mine was a bit easier because mine had the same slotted brass bolt connecting the strainer to the "cup" below. I was lucky, along with the slotted bolt, mine was connected to a brass nut. Once I figured out, I got the right socket and an extender - the rest was just like you represented in your video. The entire process took me 20 minutes and saved me a boat-load of money not having to call a plumber to do the job!! Without your video I probably would have gotten my saws-all and cut the whole damn thing out!! EXCELLENT JOB Fix It Guy!! 👍👍👍

Cried for 15 minutes. When all you needed to do was: Realize the leak was from the tailpiece to the downtube. Take out the tailpiece and put in a new flanged tailpiece washer. Would have been 5 minutes and a .12 cent washer and done.

I love the fact that you use the term "Hooked Up". My friends and I used to use that in the late 80's and early 90's along with Mint and The Sit (for situation)

The way I have gotten the strainer out is by using the tips of the handles of a pair of pliers into the holes of the strainer itself, rather than a super wide screwdriver/butter knife/cats paw

That is a great option. And that way you have something you can put some torque behind as well. Quartet don’t always cut it.

Why it is every time you post, I run to look to see what we have lol. We had to tear down the original house, its been added onto twice, after we got flooding from hurricane Isabel. I hated to see the cooper go but thankful we don't have that type of drain! Thanks again for an informative video!!

I think you tightened it to the point you broke it, if you unscrewed it counter clockwise it would have simply unscrewed off

You could have also used a nut extractor to extricate that slotted nut with the same principle as a tub drain extractor

LMAO ~ Toss a quarter in your toolbox. Next time try a 25 cent quarter, with a screwdriver down the drain to keep the unit from spinning when you easily unscrew the drain with a quarter. Less than 20 seconds. Then just reseal with some new putty. Use the quarter to rescrew it back on. Easy, inexpensive, like new. Those drains are awesome and super easy. Didn't even chip a nail 💞

I had the same in my apartment and couldn't unscrew it as well. I ended up using a sheet metal cutters to cut through the six thin metal strips. It came right out. What a garbage plastic part, I'll upgrade to a quality metal part in my kitchen.

I just removed one of those plastic ones yesterday. Luckily the bolt on mine broke pretty quickly with not much effort. I was glad because it wasn't turning at first, but thought what a POS. First time I've ever changed one of those.

The method of strainer removal used is called "Feild Expedience". Which means getting the job done, quick fast and in a hurry, without hurting yourself, someone else or damaging anything that will be reused.

Not a professional plumber here and maybe it's normal... I have never seen a dishwasher drain go directly into the wall instead of connecting above the trap... Interesting. Like the videos That Fix It Guy! 👍

@ThatFixItGuy 4 жыл бұрын
Great catch! I am planning on shooting a video of that. I noticed it as well. My friend got hosed on this remodel. There is suppose to be an air gap installed for the dishwasher as well. They did not do that. I will at least put a high loop in for him so the dishwasher will not fill with sewage if he gets a sink stoppage.

Been loving all the videos bro, was thinking on the width of the screw driver being a problem to be able to unscrew or hold tight the basket strainer to unscrew it. Heck, I 1" wide or so chisel came to mind, maybe a look into the ol' tool box and you may have one as you can take it to the grinder to make it fit to your needs.

That is not a bad idea. That screw driver I tried is the biggest I carry. Tom has a great idea and I think I will buy one. Never knew brass instrument tools and plumbing tools were universal! I’m digging it. If not I was going to make one up. Thanks for watching!

Just thinking outside the box here. What if you took some flat stock and JB weld a couple of bolts to it. If it is a “standard width” you may be able to set a handle to it? Kinda like a t handle Allen wrench with a couple of studs?

Just ran into this myself....I am short on cash so I wanted to clean it out and tighten it up not replace it. So I needed a tool to get that screw out. Found a video on the Kraus brand like it being installed made by the manufacture. They recommended a 15mm flat screwdriver or a coin. My solution was a quarter in a vice grips to get it out.

Love your video. In life every bit helps thanks for sharing. You asked if there is an easier way. I have one since these basket strainers are garbage any way. I did this since I was unable to do it your way. I just put a quarter on the end of the drill. Still too tight. So I just drilled it out from the bottom.

I used a small chisel to get the cheap basket strainer out. I’ve ordered a brushed nickel one to go with the corian off white sink. So true. The cheap white plastic drain did not last long.

Found the easiest way to get rid of these when I had to replace one. Since I was having the same issue of removal and that middle bolt was stuck. Go from underneath and clip all the plastic fins with a side cutter, It then falls away and all done
