About Etta May:
Etta May has performed her brand of clean-comedy on Oprah, Showtime, Comic Strip Live, MTV, and as a guest commentator on “CBS Sunday Morning,” Winner of the prestigious American Comedy Awards “Comic Of The Year,” and so much more. In addition, she headlines the successful all-female comedy tour, “Etta May and the Southern Fried Chicks,” selling out theatres all over the country. Think Blue Collar Comedy Tour with better hair and a bigger attitude! In addition to television, Etta May is a regular on Sirius-XM Comedy Channels and the syndicated Bob & Tom radio show.
Born and in Bald Knob, Arkansas, Etta May grew up alongside nine older brothers, who referred to their baby sister as “the human sacrifice.” Etta May’s parents - her father, a potpourri farmer, and her mother, bedridden by constant childbearing - didn’t realize she was a girl until she needed a training bra.
She met her husband, Delbert, an aspiring truck driver, at a friend’s kegger. From across the yard, their eyes locked in a loving look, you know that stare that lasts a moment too long. Nine months later, she was blessed with a boy, and three more kids followed. “That’s where my comedy comes from. I just wait for my husband or kids to do something stupid, and then I write it down.”
Before finding success as a stand-up comic, Etta wandered from dead-end job to dead-end job, including a 10-year stint as a school bus driver. She says she learned how to handle unruly kids by Armor-Alling the seats and slamming on the brakes all the way to school. Her theory: “Kind of hard to pick a fight with the kid in front of you when you’re just holding on for dear life.”
Then she decided to take a chance on herself and follow her dream. Lots of hard work and drive, and a few years later, she wins “Female Comic Of The Year” at the American Comedy Awards. It’s the American Story we are all told that you can become anything you set your mind to in this great country, and for Etta May, it worked!

I mean, she seems like a generally polite older lady that isn’t trying to degrade or sneer at anyone. Maybe she used one or two terms that were out of date but she’s older and hasn’t given any indications that she just LOVES to make fun of people who are being treated badly already. It sounded like she didn’t even know what she had said that was offensive, just that this lady was mad. Like, did this lady even elaborate with the intention of suggesting something she could do to make it clear that she wasn’t trying to be nasty or cruel if that was how she came across in the joke in question? Or was she just showing off how “righteous” she was to her friends?

@@johnramirez5996No, comedy Shows are not meant to offend anyone, it’s just a comedian telling jokes and, if people can’t take a joke then, it’s time to remove yourself from the room! As for the comment above yours, Etta May didn’t say nothing about being invited to someone’s show, she just was figuratively speaking! And, yeah, she dresses just like my grandma did! The type of top she’s wearing was what was known back in the 70s as a work smock, because, women wore tops like these when, they worked in factories, and, nursing homes, yes cause they made them in solid colors To, cause, mom also wore them and no sleeve ones when, she worked at the shoe factory! The pants well, you might call them Sear Suckers = because, you could order them through the catalog through Sears and, they also look like nurses pants, these days they wear them in all colors and, yes, grandma always put a open sweater over top a lot of times for the dressed up look but, not for a da of workin in the kitchen!

I guess most people would consider me "woke", but I love her comedy! BTW - most people use "they" instead of he or she and probably don't realize they do it. For example, "I spoke with someone today, and they said..." Unfortuntely, it's usually because they didn't actually talk with someone.

Please remember that Etta May is a character that she has created and that its a comedy skit. She wasn't saying anything negative about anyone or trying to upset anyone about someone approaching her. No one probably approached her. You wouldn't even recognize her out of costume. No one would pay to go to her show that didnt understand that she is making fun of a character that she created or that would be offended. When I saw her years ago with someone they told me she is actually very inclusive and accepting of others because she would want others to be accepting of her in real life. Think about that for a minute. She is a brilliant comedian. She is very talented but what she plays on stage isnt real. Vickie Lawrence wasn't the grandma on Mama's Family. She has taken a character that she created to make fun of onstage and has made a career out of it for decades. She is brilliant and talented but her name is not Etta May and shes not her character. If this story happened, bc I’ve never met someone who was this weird about being offended (then again, people can be weird and jerks)I honestly wonder wth was so offensive to this lady that complained. I haven’t heard her take big jabs at gay or trans people, say racist stuff, crap on disabled people, etc. From the special and clips I’ve seen so far, almost all her jokes are at her own expense and making fun of the culture she grew up in in a way that still inc,uses people from that culture. If some of the terms she uses are a little outdated, it makes more sense to give the benefit of the doubt because she’s an older lady, and maybe politely offer a friendly tip if there’s a term she uses that might be taken the wrong way. I love the shirt, by the way- it doesn’t make a joke at anyone’s expense but the person wearing it, and fits well with her sassy and lightly self-deprecating style of comedy. She’s very warm, captivating, and makes her audience feel included without trying to tear down others because they’re “weird” or “alternative”. I hope to see more of her.
