I understand what Moog is feeling, I had my old Mightyboy broken Into a few years back, they had pushed it around the corner out of view and did the same thing, smashed up under the wheel and absolutely destroyed the key barrel and switch. Scary thing was when the electrician came to see the damage and take it for repair, he just cut a wire and bridged it with another one and the engine cranked 😱

Shame you didn't catch them in the act, here in the UK one of my mates was parked outside my house in his modded Toyota starlet glanza while we were having a few beers. The CCTV which ran in real time to a screen showed someone walk up to his car and start trying to open the door with a screwdriver. He didn't know what to do and panicked. I on the other hand knew exactly what to do........I wasn't going to confront someone with a screw driver unarmed and in the UK the police are pretty useless, if they turn up an hour after the crimes committed you're one of the lucky ones. So I decided the best idea was to grab a large axe and chase the guy down the street with it. As soon as I shouted at this guy and went nuts at him he started running. I chased him for a few minutes until he jumped over someone's 6ft garden wall. When he landed the other side he started screaming and swearing. I saw the house lights turn on and thought I'd better get away as I'm holding a 4ft axe. It turns out a few days later he had badly sprained his ankle after jumping the wall and been arrested for going equipped for burglary and trespassing because the homeowners called the police and he couldn't walk to get away. He got his karma. Moral of the story, leave other people's stuff alone, they worked hard for it and karma will catch up to you one day.

The value thing is so true. November 2019 my DC2 integra Type R got rear ended. Relatively light damage, car still 100% drivable and no chassis damage. At the time it was insured for $7200, which to be honest was a fair value for it on the market at that point. Quote to fix it was $7700. They wrote it off despite a solid month of me trying desperately to save it. Queue 2 years later and if it was repaired it would now be worth 30K.

@@popanollie1 i did buy it back with the intent to repair it but the insurance company deregistered it again despite my protests which made the whole process of getting it back on the road a much bigger and more expensive nightmare past the original 7K repair cost. (Im in NZ with fairly strict laws on damaged/potentially unsafe vehicles) It ended up sitting in the driveway for 6 months before I eventually onsold it to someone else who planned on turning it into a track car. About a month after the crash I actually found another DC2R for sale in original factory Milano red (stupidly rare) and bought that one, which turned out to be a much better financial decision in the long term anyway because it was in MUCH better condition. That's sucks man. If this ever happens again, find a bodyshop that's willing to write an estimate to 95% total threshold and cover the rest out of pocket. The shop I used to work at would do that for people that clearly loved their cars and wanted them to not be written off because it wasn't really any skin off our nose and totaling cars didn't make us hardly any money vs repairing them. We did it for an MR2 that had a full bodykit because the customer was willing to pay and willing to find out of production parts for us.

That's what really annoys me. I had an old 80's Navara with a full sound system in it, and they destroyed the driver's door, same as this GTi-R, then mutilated the dash trying to get the headunit out. Ripped up all the carpets, tore the wiring looms to shreds trying to pull the amp out from under the seat. If they'd have just taken their time and bought a screwdriver along instead of a chainsaw, it would have been repairable. The damn thing was out in the middle of nowhere - nobody was going to sneak up on them and catch them in the act. They had all the time in the world, yet they still went out of their way to destroy it.

80s cars were worse. My Dad had a shop next to someone with a Sierra Cosworth. The 3rd time it got stolen and recovered the owner was complaining to my dad about "how do they always manage to steal it?" so my Dad took the keys to his Ford Transit van, unlocked the Cossie, started the engine and drove it off right under the guy's nose. Factory immobilisers, moving the stalks for the door locks so you couldn't just fish them through the rubber door seals and putting plates in the door to stop the coat hanger trick were massive game changers between 80s and 90s cars.

When I had my GTi-R back in 1998, it had so many aftermarket alarms and immobilizers fitted before I imported it that when it arrived at the docks in Southampton, it took us the better part of a day to get it to start. My first mod (of very many) was to rip them all out and fit a Cat1 alarm with lo-jack. Never had any further problems with it.

Yup had the same happen on my E36, EWS2 immobilizer chip in the key died while visiting the Nurburgring, stranded there for hours in the middle of the night, hundreds of miles from home, cursed the whole system but I really did not want to remove the immobilizer because it does work, and EWS2 is still a fairly difficult system to beat, despite being so old: the only way to bypass it is to code it out of the ECU.

One thing to note about fuel pump kill switches on loud cars, we love ours because you can hear the car start then choke out and die when it clears the fuel lines. Makes for a really good alarm and a way to panick any thieves that do get it started. Also if you own an older 4wd with barn doors on the back check those rubbers, especially on the smaller door! Most old land cruisers you can rip the rear windows out with your bare hands cause the rubbers are 30 years old, great if you lock your keys in the car, but not so great if someone else wants it

Because they didn't even bother taking the rims. If it was joy riders I'm so glad they didn't get the car because they may have burnt it out and that would have seriously sucked. Another important tip if you own a desirable car is to avoid leaving your keys near the front door at night, it's remarkably easy to reach through a letterbox with a bit of coat hanger wire and snag them. I've personally done this 3 times trying to get back into my own house after locking myself out and friends houses for the same reason, you'd be surprised how far into the house you can reach if you can see what you're doing or have someone to guide you (ie. someone looking through the window). I'm told that if someone is targeting your car they sometimes knock on the door in the guise of a lost pizza delivery man (or similar forgettable, often helmeted disguise) in the evening and use the opportunity to scope where your keys are placed.

As briefly mentioned in the video, make sure your keys are secure in your house. As cars become harder and harder to steal, a more common occurrence now is for thieves to break into your home and steal the keys, as many modern cars simply cannot be hotwired any more - no key, no vroom vroom. Don't leave your keys by the front door, or in plain view from a window. Ideally get a key safe and keep your keys in there, away from easy access. I've had this conversation with various police officers - making your stuff harder to steal will make thieves go elsewhere looking for an easier score. Same applies to your house, any outbuildings and so on. Make it secure and make it *visibly* secure as a deterrent.

That kind of door entry was very popular in Brazil to steal head units and items left into the car, the person places their foot right above the door handle below the window trim and pulls with all it's force the side of the door, they will bend all the way, a person can fit it's body into the gap, and windows mostly will not break. After stealing all your stuff they can bend the door back to a certain point so no one will notice, that might explain your door spacing so small. Hate that stuff... Such a headache.

Don't know how prevalent it is in Australia, but thieves here use repeater boxes to open and steal newer keyless ignition cars. Your keys can be in a draw in the back of the house, but the repeater boxes boost the signal enough to make the car think the keys are present. The only answer is (newer) cars have keys that stop transmitting when they're stationary for a few minutes, or a faraday case.

I'm not sure if they're popular in warm climate areas like they are in cold climates, but remote starters essentially bypass any immobilizer your car may have come equipped with. I know where I live in Canada for many years popular remote starts had the antenna mounted on the windshield above the mirror and sometimes had a little blinking light on them. Not sure why they had it, maybe to try and trick people into thinking it was an alarm or something. But in the end it was a little blinking beacon that told thieves "hey this car/truck is super easy to steal". So food for thought if anyone has an aftermarket remote start installed in their vehicle to be extra cautious and it would be a good idea to have some kind of hidden ecu/fuel killswitch as well.

One of the best methods on old cars, remove your ignition rotor when you store your car for a longer time. car won't start without it, they'll keep searching for a switch or blocking system of some kind. they'll never geuss and actual part that is hidden in a cap missing.

I had my 92 Civic Si hatchback stolen from in front of my house. Most guy trenching feeling, it was my pride and joy and was only 10 years old at the time. I'd had it for a couple years and invested quite a chunk of change to the tune of all my earnings from delivering pizza as a second job while I was in the military. Then to top it off, my feeking insurance company went belly up and I never saw any money for the car. Tldr: make sure you have quality insurance.

In the early 1980s dad rewired the cars with a flip switch that you had to hit, run the key and then the horn was the starter. You then flipped it back after the vehicle started. Worked great with a couple of attempts to steal vehicles from us.

@wnnalis cioov luckily the worst was a busted window and ignition. No one seemed to ever get them started.

In the U.K at the minute, car theft with modern cars is at an all time high because they’ve got laptop bags with a device that connects with a copy key and then they jump in start the car and off, it can take less than a minute, think I even saw one which was 30 seconds, it’s ridiculous how bad car theft is at the moment

It's like old 2001 Renaults. The immobilizer is part of the body contol module which fails all the time (German part). Once that stops working properly you have to replace the ECU, BCM (UCH in french cars), and the key/barrel/transponder ring meaning most of the most get scrapped when it goes wrong. Mad that people are brave enough to try and lift a well recognizable car like this and then much it up in the process. :/

My mate had a black GTi-R back in the early 2000s, he took me for a spin around the Shire and I've never been so scared in a car in my life! That thing would just pin you back in the seat and was absolutely relentless. 😂🇦🇺

DOOR: NZ, it's the same door as any N14 pulsar 2-door, especially the Gti (SR18DE) and the sissy 1.6L NZ has loads of those in the wreckers. Same thing for the steering column surround trim pieces.
