I befriended a lot of North Koreans that defected, they were all incredibly happy and you wouldn't notice they were North Korean unless they explicitly told you, because they've adjusted well to regular society. The one thing they all agree on, is how they don't regret leaving, despite the issues it might cause them, they all knew how bullshit everything was and also said no one at home believed the North Korean propaganda, it was just all good acting for them. They didn't find out about how North Korea is basically a huge Drug-based empire, until they left and then found out. There was something they were divided on, which was whether or not intervention should happen or if unification should happen, half of them were of the mind that they shouldn't because of the fact doing so, would force a lot of the innocents to just throw their lives away during counterattacks, the other half wanted the intervention because of fear and safety for their families. As for unification, almost all of them didn't want it immediately, they wanted a free North Korea, free of the tyranny it is currently under, but not suddenly shoved under South Korea's influence; they wanted more time before slowly unifying as one country, they were wary about being exploited by South Korea, but also the fact they want to develop as their own society before eventually joining as equals.

One of the craziest stories regarding North Korea abusing their embassies: For years the embassy in Berlin, Germany had leased a part of its grounds to a youth hostel. It was very popular due to its location in the city center, just a few minutes away from the Brandenburg Gate. After an investigation due to increasing sanctions, it was found that the hostel was used to raise around 40k € per month, likely to help fund NKs nuclear weapons program. After a long legal battle, it was shut down right around the start of the pandemic. It was quite bewildering going on a school trip and entering literally right next to the embassy gates, with old NK propaganda pics from before the German reunification still visible through the gates and windows. Technically the hostel was even under North Korean jurisdiction, although not really enforceable.

I am by no means correct, BUT I do think there are reasons (NOT JUSTIFICATIONS) for as to why the DPRK is the way it is. First of which is how Korea, back when it was Joseon, got its government structure that was similar to China (back when they had dynasties), but practiced it to a degree that they did even more than China's. Fast forward hundreds of years and we have Korea split between the Soviets (Stalin at the time) and the US (why wasn't Korea allowed to be its own whole peninsula like it had been in the past before China, Mongolia and later Japan post-WW2???). Thus, South Korea had a more enhanced version of operating like the USA, but in the scope of Korean culture. Something similar happened with the DPRK where it got Stalin's cult of personality but to the extreme. That is why the DPRK is such a heavy-handed dictatorship. Then we get to the 90s and the USSR is no more (meaning no support anymore), and with sanctions much like Cuba's but worse and then add the famine and the "Arduous March". Seeing as its only way to stay sovereign and not have the CCCP or west take it over, thus it prioritizes military over the people and builds nuclear weapons. I would not live there even for a trillion dollars; just to be clear I advocate for democracy, which in my mind means rule by the PEOPLE and not one leader or a small group of people and economic elites. Of course, you could just ignore me too, my comment doesn't really matter in the end lol.

Additionally, I'd be interested in looking at Hinduvata (Hindu supremacy/nationalism) propaganda. It's really bad on social media, and while Muslims are the primary "villains" in these narratives, so are Sikhs, Christians, and many other minority faiths. They've inspired a lot of destruction and petty arrests. But I know a lot of BJP apologists would come after Muta, especially since he's of Indian Muslim heritage himself.

When you were talking about what North Korea has done wrong, the first two things (that are far more drastic in my opinion) are constant nuclear threats and weapons supply to belligerent states (Russia currently)
@meow-sr2bl10 ай бұрын
meh
@SophTheLaunchTechnician10 ай бұрын
the constant nuclear threats are because of the paranoia created in the NK government after the collapse of the ussr led by a string of economic liberalization policies by Gorbachev. This and the funding of nationalist parties / sentiment in the ussr by the US led the USSR to collapse. NK is simply paranoid to the extreme to fall to US covert interventionism. The second point is refuted by the fact that Russia is one of the only countries that will accept NK weapons and do not fully sanction them (apart from china). Additionally, NK is one of the most sanctioned countries in the world and is the only one part fo the lost that deosnt have large resource rich parts of its country. How the fuxk else are they meant to run their economy, and that is the point of sanctions. Bleed the NK government dry of any money they have which is why they have to rely on desperate tactics.

There's a defector named Lee Hyeon-seo that wrote an interesting book called the Girl with 7 Names. Her family was fairly well off compared to her peers because they lived right on the border of China and were able to smuggle goods. Her father taught her Chinese while she was growing up, so she was able to escape into China and disguise herself as a Chinese woman for years while saving money to make the journey to South Korea.

He also slandered numerous North koreans who have made their way to the west to tell their story of their journey calling them 'western plants.' Surprised he didnt go after Yeomni Park. He took down the video from public viewing atleast after a while probably because of simply how un detached from reality the video sounded.

I've been subbed to Jaka Parker for a while and do really like his videos. It's not propaganda, not anti, it just shows you what life is like in Pyeongyang. And even with that, you can see like how empty the markets are, in Winter you'll see the workers inside wearing coats, as they have no real heating. Just little things like that gives you a good view of how it is. Even at times when Jaka goes to the store, you'd think he was Bill Gates with how the workers will quickly run to help him and get everything for him
