My parents added me to their costco membership when I got my license at 16. It was so I could get gas for my car but also to go shopping for them. I loved going alone and getting to treat myself to a slice of pizza and churro. Thanks to my mom, Im a really smart shopper.

@@hopelk Thank you. Yes, it is anxious times. I live in California which is totally opposite to everything in Alaska so it's a bit scarier. I live outside of LA in a safer place but during the coronavirus, they let out somewhere between 14k to 17k prisoners. Being raised by sheriffs has made me this way. You always be aware of your surroundings too. Always good to keep your phone in hand and some kind of knife or pepper spray and always check your car before going.

My dear beautiful young lady. Always be confident in yourself. My daughter has the same. So I understand. I think life in general is very stressful depending which country you stay in. My husband and I travelled so much, together, that we taught our children to be self sufficient at young ages. We were concerned that if something happened to us, they could at least cook a meal, do laundry, and know how to buy groceries. I am so thankful we did. They have grown to be self reliant, strong, have good common sense, great cooks and best of all, wonderful parents.

Circa winter 1971-summer 74, Alaska. Dad on Slope, Mom in hospital. Me at 14/15 had to take care of 4 siblings, house, shopping, cooking, laundry (and go to school myself) plus mom when she got to be home a bit...and had to drive for all that with just my learners permit cuz it was just me. Upper Hillside above Anchorage when there were only a couple other houses and roads were dicy. Would have loved a costco back then! Nice that Audrey gets to learn these things with her parents beside her

Great job Audrey! Don't forget to also teach her to purchase the box/package items first then add your meats, dairy & fresh fruits/veggies. This will help to keep your "delicate stuff" 😉 from getting bruised or crushed & also keep the frozen/refrigerator items cold. I think you both do an awesome job at teaching your children things they can do at their age (cleaning, cooking breakfast [a great way to begin the cooking journey], time management etc.) & then you step back & let them do those things. My Mom (mother of 6) had a friend ask how she was able to get all the household cleaning, laundry, cooking etc., completed because she taught us & then gave that chore to us. We were held accountable for doing our chores or we weren't allowed to have friends over, play outside, etc. So Mom's friend came back to her a couple of weeks later saying the plan had been a success for the first week to 10 days but they slowly stopped doing their chores. After discussing Mom's procedure again her friend finally said "well they did great for awhile but after they left for school or playing outside I would go back & remake their beds because they were messy, lumpy nothing was straight." Mom told her, "No, you cannot expect them to make their beds, or dust the furniture perfectly but as they grow they will get better & better. Also, NEVER go behind them & redo a chore!" Her friend then said, "but I just can't do that because its not perfect." Mom then said, "Its your responsibility to love, provide for them & to teach them & help them to KNOW in their hearts they are truly a Child of our Heavenly Father! So what if Vicky makes a lumpy bed for awhile, thats fine, she is just 4, just keep praising & teaching & one day you will realize there are no lumps in the bed, or that the towels are folded correctly & carefully put away, or Paula came in & set the table for supper without being asked. As parents we have been given the responsibility to teach these children sent to us from Heavenly Father & I want to be able to stand before him & say, "yes, I loved them, I taught them about your Son, Jesus Christ, I taught them to be clean physically, mentally & spiritually." If I can stand before Heavenly Father &answer those questions positively I'm sure I did as he asked of me as a mother." Remember, we aren't teaching children to be children, we are teaching children to be honest, loving, & kind adults!

Great job Audrey!!! It’s a necessity to take kids to the store & 1 show them how to shop 2 how to pick the best price item. We realized my hubby never taught our daughters how to do it until the oldest moved out. I’m disabled due to chronic pain so am basically bedridden for the last almost 15 years so I’ve spent my daughters lives living in my bed. Just make sure u do it with all the kids. I had already taught Our sons were before we adopted our girls.

When my parents were in the hospital (mom was sick and dad was always next to her) while both my sister and i were still teens with a 5 and 6 year old we had to do everything. Groceries, laundry, cooking. It was great we knew how to do it all or it would have been a disaster.

Watching last night, I heard you mention that you would like to garden. I live in North Florida which does get cold, and I started tomato and peppers in my garage in January. They are very ready to go in the ground and I will plant them next week. But, I just wanted to encourage you to start seeds in the garage or indoors with grow lights and a heat pad, and start them about two months before your last frost date.

And because people went nuts (stores were basically empty) it got so bad we were allowed to only buy one pack of pasta and one pack of toilet paper. Thank God things are calmed down tremendously now. You said that roles have changed . In our home,my husband and I share the chores, there's no his and hers. He enjoys cooking so he makes most of our dinners. We both clean and tidy as we go along, I stay on top of the washing, folding clothes , bedroom cleaning, bathrooms etc. We both do shopping, and both are very much hands on parents,ie, we take it in turns to do night time routine etc. The only role we see is being a family, and a family works together,it's not always perfect but it works for us.

Grocery prices have definitely been on the rise here in Northeast Florida. We moved here from Alaska last summer and since then, we've seen probably a 20% increase in our bill (but still cheaper than Anchorage). Bless you Somers family, and sweet Audrey, you are a real role model for your siblings!! ❤

I really miss Alaska. Lived in Anchorage from 1975 to 1985. Almost got back up there, but too expensive to move, so I got close and moved to Spokane WA. Awesome to see ya'll and seeing AK. Thanks.

With fuel prices going up, it cost more to deliver to stores so prices will increase. Love seeing Audrey shop, and some snacks don’t hurt, I use to buy 6 gallons a week of milk for 4 kids, but I wanted my kids bones to be strong, my god children all 4 had broken bones cause they didn’t drink milk.

Audrey, fantastic job 👏. Prices in Ontario are getting very high! For those of us on a low income we are struggling to eat healthier. We do our best. Prayers to you all, stay safe and healthy.

Great lessons for Aubrey and the kids. My girls used to love going shopping with me and it helped them when they got out on their own. And yes I think prices are going up.

Seems like you had a lot of snow this winter. Always good to teach our children life skills like shopping, starting the fire, and other such things. I understand the need to declutter the house and mind. Great video.
