Houses are not free though , the tax payer is going be lumbered with a massive bill 1 , 000 , 000 houses given to illegals and the like will cost the tax payer over £12 billion per annum and that is a very conservative figure... illegal immigration will end up costing over £100 billion faster than most people think... In fact it is probably already costing half of that except they fiddle the figures and remove the costs for many by reclassifying them as seen already where they call them asylum seekers and refugees , as well as illegal becoming irregular!

We recently retired - we HAD to move from Sussex to Lincolnshire to be able to afford a reasonably sized house in cash. We could not afford either rent or a mortgage on our pensions. Lincolnshire is lovely - we now live rurally and peacefully. BUT - our youngest, a man of 32, who could not afford housing on his own in Sussex or the whole of the South East, had no choice but to move with us (he was doing a Teaching apprenticeship in Sussex in a special school). He now is faced with having to try and find work here in rural Lincolnshire. Swings and Roundabouts come to mind.

We did the same thing and moved from South Oxfordshire to Somerset. We moved because of the number of new houses surrounding us and the people who moved in were not mindful of speed limits and were antisocial. The obsession with the size of our GDP cloaks the underlying problem. Look at the size of the GDPs of those countries who are doing well and the inhabitants are well off. Most are much smaller than ours, but as Benedict pointed out the ratio of population to GDP is very different. We need external earnings to bring down our debt and our current account and trade deficits. Until we address that, we will just get poorer.
