extremely rare footage of Thunderclap Newman performing Something In The Air (excerpt) and Wilhelmina on the British TV show "How Late It Is" in 1969.

This is another one of those 60's songs I will never forget. I loved both sides of the record. my mates and I all much younger back then would play this record on a portable player until the batteries would run out. they were fantastic times I will always remember in Skewen South Wales. Thanks for sharing.

I too played both sides of this record, this amused my father because he remembered the Wilhemina from his own youth and would sing along to it ...

What a very weird band they were....two relatively "normal" rock type guys, Jimmy McCulloch looking like he was straight out of school (which he was!) and Andy Newman resembling a sort of 1960s Richard Stilgoe. Wonderful !

On this day in 1969 {August 2nd} Thunderclap Newman performed "Something In The Air" on the German TV program 'The Beat-Club'... One month later on September 6th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #37 and spent 10 weeks on the Top 100... On July 2nd it reached #1 {for 3 weeks} on the United Kingdom's Singles chart... Tom Petty covered it in 1994; his version peaked at #19 on Billboard's Hot Rock Tracks chart...

I used to work with Jim Pitman Averys mum back in the 80s. Very nice woman and very proud of Jim. I believe he was the Bass player for Thunderclap Newman.

I wonder if Billy Sheers had a hand is the composition and arrangement (strings, and horns) of Something in the air. It's got a lot of Beatles flavor to it.

Oh really cool! I remember the single "Accidents" having a cool B side also.

Me too, I'm now wondering if it's the dreadful events of today's society that send me back to the music of my youth.

This is fun to watch. Not the greatest song, but it does have the Thunderclap Newman sound except for no Speedy Keen vocals. The young lady who is featured in the video seems hell bent on distracting Newman to the point that he occasionally forgets that he is supposed to be singing into the microphone. One of the very few Thunderclap Newman performances on film.

Where is the period film clip of the band playing this terrific track on one of London's bridges to a wonderfully motley crew of little kids, mod folk and grannies? I remember this one from my childhood, and would love to see it again.

While John 'Speedy' Keen would eventually produce one of Motörhead's first singles in 1976, Lemmy Kilmister had longer hair when performing singing and playing guitar in one of his early bands Sam Gopal in 1969 (then known as Ian Willis) -- /watch?v=LrJ9oeuN_9o

I can't recall seeing this band "Live", though I'm fairly certain I went to the Deep Purple tour in 1969 & they apparently were the support act - but it doesn't half sound similar to Viv Stanshall of the Bonzo Dog Doodah Band.

What the f--k was TCN's management thinking of releasings such an horrendous B-side to this " world wide iconic " A-side SOMETHING IN THE AIR. OK this was a (scratched band) put together by Pete Townsend but surely they along with Pete could have recorded something in keeping with the original. The B-side was like listening to a BONZO DOG reject track.
