Crossfell Railway Videos Wood, water and coal. All NATURAL elements of our planet. This “harming the environment” clap-trap is total bunkum. What we are seeing is the elements being returned to their basic form. These “Eco-Warriors” don’t have a clue about the environment!

Some stunning shots as always, and awesome sounds of these locomotives working hard. One tiny minor editing niggle - I so much more prefer it when you let the whole of the train pass through the shot before you move on to the next shot, rather than cutting each clip 'short'. But again, thank you for all the hard work, effort and professionalism you put into recording our steam heritage at work.

My recollection is that the black smoke was from expensive over-firing and the white was steam caused by incorrect use of the regulator, in both cases frowned on by cost-conscious managers. The steam was more noticeable in cold weather, and was a real hazard to road traffic, where it tended to form black ice on the road surface when the road passed beneath a railway bridge, as any scooter rider will remember.

When you overload the firebox with coal like that , you get much less gas combustion within the boiler tubes and much fuel just going up the stack as smoke and soot. The trick is to stoke only a little bit but often. Ideally, smoke should be light grey and sparse. No smoke is also wasteful and an indication of declining pressure.

For there Tractive effort and horsepower these loco's are more friendly to the environment than any modern electric or diesel-electric as the emissions are of a natural creation. Coal and wood burns in the wild every day all over the world, the way we make electric and diesel is not a natural occurrence.
